Everyone seems to have something in their past that they want to forget. Sometimes, moving away gives you enough distance for the problem. Sometimes not.

An old group of friends tried running away from their problems. They ended up scattered across the country, and as a result fell out of touch with their old friends. They thought they'd done it. They let themselves believe that they'd finally escaped all their secrets, everything they weren't proud of. But one day, they get a phone call. The death of an old classmate, a friend, brings them back to their hometown. They originally think that it's going to be a short trip, just for the funeral- but when they finally reconnect, they realise that things aren't quite so simple. That first night, they realise that this isn't the old times any more. There's arguments that tear apart friendships for once and for all, relationships that reconnect and rekindle, and sparks flying for the first time.

They're forced to take a look at themselves, to see how they've changed, how the people they used to love have changed. And when a call comes that the death was under suspicious circumstances, they're forced to face themselves, their friends, and all their secrets. The murdered man was an honours student on full ride scholarship to Harvard, one of the best people they knew, but rumours start to fly that he wasn't quite so shiny beneath the surface. As much as they try not to, as they try to see everyone in the same light, their views start to shift subconsciously. Are the people they called their friends really who they used to be? And will things ever be the same again?

some quick rules! first things first, a reminder that god-modding is forbidden. god-modding typically means controlling a character without their player's permission. so when in doubt, ask. romance and violence are pretty much a given for a drama-driven rp like this, but keep it within site rules. most importantly, if things get steamy, either fade to black or bring it off site. there will be adult themes within the rp. if you're not comfortable with any of the content, please PM me and we can work around it or i can ask other players to alter as necessary. please keep the drama to the ic. any issues arising among members of the rp should be dealt with over pm. reservations go in the ooc as they're easier to keep track of. real face claims only, please. characters should be in their early twenties and should all be around the same age. you have 48 hours to submit a WIP. that WIP can be a blank sheet, i just want something in to know you're still on board. you will then have 5 days after submitting your WIP to finish your character. i will grant extensions as long as you pm me. any further questions or issues, please pm me! i don't bite, promise. when reserving, i'd like your character's face claim, a 250x250 image of said face claim, what your character was running from, and their hex colour.

Harry tugged on the bottom of his blazer, staring at his outfit. As tempted as he'd been to go for something a little more... bold, he'd strayed on the side of more conservative. He told himself that if he'd gone too bold, nobody would recognise him. And that little bit of pride said that he wanted people to recognise him, wanted them to see how much he'd changed. But he would be lying if he said that there wasn't that element of fear as well, fear of how he would be received.

Trinity Davenport was hosting some sort of party, a get together of old schoolmates. As if things had never really changed. He felt like there wasn't much of a point in pretending that nothing had. Hell, his outfit, complete with eyeliner, was a constant reminder of exactly how much had. Rumours about Matthew Brokenborough had started flying. Harry had always had his suspicions that Matthew hadn't been an angel, but nothing concrete. Harry's own suspicions hadn't yet been confirmed, but part of him was glad for that. For Shay's sake.

He sighed, grabbing a scarf and slinging it around his neck for a final touch, before picking up his phone and texting Shay.

To: shay <3
you still picking me up like old times?

It felt so surreal to be back in Oakhedge. Everything still felt exactly the same, even though it had been four years. The strangest part of it all was not going home. He was staying in a hotel the other side of town from his parents. If they were even still living here. Part of him wanted to go back in all his dramatic, glam rock style just to rub it in, just to horrify them by seeing what he'd become. If they'd even care. Honestly, he felt like they'd just been glad to get him out from under their feet. Had they relished the control? Did they miss it at all? Or were they just glad that it wasn't them having to deal with him any more? Would they actually see the man who used to be their son, and decide to be happy that he was living his truth, who he really was? This was the constant battle. The anger that made him hope they were angry too, that all they'd ever wanted was a puppet to manipulate. And then the longing that they were just happy for him, that they hadn't really meant it. Most of the time, the anger won, but there was still just that little bit of longing there. But for tonight, he decided to ignore it. The anger made him bold, confident. And that was what he wanted.

Already dressed, Trinity was sweeping around the house making sure everything was ready. This had to be just right. It had to be perfect. Everyone was already stressed and confused and emotional. The news about Matthew had rattled Rin enough. The fact that he'd cheated on every girlfriend he'd ever had and had apparently sold Ritalin to freshmen while in Harvard had just made her wonder how many of her other friends had similar secrets. She'd invited as many people as she knew from their old school and told them to bring their friends. Her family were out of town and had let her use the whole house for this party.

She knew that she was overdressed. But right now, she just needed to feel powerful. Being back in this house, sleeping in her old bedroom... It was bringing back memories she would have rather not remembered. It was making her feel like that weak, terrified teenage girl again. It wasn't something that an expensive dress and heels would fix. But it was helping at least.

"Marie! Etes-nous pret?" She demanded. "Oui, mademoiselle." was the answer, but it did nothing to relax her. She poured herself a glass of champagne and paced the hall, waiting for the doorbell to ring. She wondered if this had been a mistake, if she should have just gone out to a bar instead. There was so much that could go wrong here. Would she put people off with the scale of the whole event? Had they just been expecting... red cups, cheap beer, and shitty music? Would the champagne, the food, the multiple rooms set up as dancefloors, each with a different style of music, put them off? Or would she just impress them?

She sipped her champagne as she carefully sat down on the stairs, picking at a jewel on her dress. She didn't even know if any of her own high school friends were coming. And they hadn't even been that close. This was all just another big show, and she didn't know who she was throwing it for. She resisted the temptation to run her hands through her immaculately curled hair, instead staring at the door, waiting for it for the doorbell to ring, for somebody to just... talk to.

Shailene stared at the woman in the mirror, eyed black lace that delicately pushed her breasts up into a tasteful decolletage that still, somehow, left her feeling like it wasn't enough - not bare enough, not...right enough. The Matthew in her head told her she was being a skanky bitch. Shailene couldn't help but agree.

Shailene wondered what it said about her that she couldn't conjure up any guilt for that. Wondered what it meant that she couldn't piece together any real feeling upon the discovery of her ex-boyfriend's death, that for once - for the first time in so long - his voice in her head was the only remnant of his existence in this world. She didn't know how she felt about that. She didn't know how she felt about not knowing how she felt about it all. She mostly felt like she was going to enjoy the wine Rin Davenport was more than likely to provide at this party. It was a Rin Davenport affair; there was always wine at a Rin Davenport affair, even when there shouldn't have been.

Still though, there was a part of her that bemoaned her lack of tact - the understated class Matthew had both literally and figuratively beat into her body, the one she had to relearn was unnecessary in the pursuit of her own peace of mind, no matter the ghost imprints of his fists on her flesh and in her heart. It wasn't a strong enough voice, however, to deter her from her fashion choices for the evening, Shailene decided, idly running a hand through her currently pin-straight purple hair. She'd run a flat-iron over it before her flight.

"Oh - that's...that's nice," her mother's voice decidedly opined from Shailene's childhood bedroom door. Shailene caught the older woman's eye from the corner of her mirror, caught the tail-end of her disdain just as the older version of herself (or so she'd been told) tried smothering it with a quick smile. Shailene rolled her eyes before turning sideways to somewhat face her mother. "See, you say it like that and I'm half convinced to stay home." Shailene failed to mention that in truth, as opposed to pretending as though she grieved Matthew's loss like everyone else, she wanted to stay home in the first place. Diane immediately expressed her displeasure at that statement. "No, no no, I'm not saying - it's fine. It's..."

In the time that she hurried to backtrack on what Shailene knew was none other than reluctant acceptance of her current attire, Diane had made it across the room and into her daughter's space, hands rising to cup her face. "You look gorgeous, baby. I just wish..." Diane sighed, thumb brushing against the soft skin high on Shailene's cheek and Shailene wondered if she knew that her sleep had been disturbed since returning to her childhood home, that she'd been unable to drift back into peaceful slumber because something inside her felt wrong. "I know things ended bad for you and Matthew. It's a shame you two couldn't reconcile before he died - if not for both of your sakes, then for your own." Shailene didn't tell her that she didn't want to reconcile with him, that she wanted nothing to do with him if it didn't include screaming. Screaming and hitting because she deserved to hit back, hit back as hard and as many times as she so pleased because. She. Fucking. Deserved. It.

She didn't have the time to say it anyway. Her phone vibrated on her bed - a reprieve Harry probably would never know he had just provided - and Shailene fought down the urge to smile. "That would be Harry," she exclaimed and didn't bother to hide her enthusiasm at being able to avoid where the conversation was going. Diane hadn't been in love with Matthew, but from her distorted view, he had been a good guy. She wouldn't understand this gaping hole in Shailene's soul, this loss of something she was sure had to have been lost for a long time but she had remained ignorant to its loss until she had gotten the call. Either way, Shailene had avoided the Matthew topic for the last three years and refused to pick it up now. She hurried to her bed where her phone and clutch lay, scooped them up so that she could text a response to Harry, and then turned back towards her mom. "I gotta go. I'll text you when I get there and when I'm on my way back, ok?"

To: Harry
leaving now <3 <3 <3 <3

Diane stared at her for a beat too long and Shailene felt naked in a way she should have felt when she first looked into the mirror. Then Diane's lips stretched into a soft smile that made something in Shailene ache and said, "Sure thing, tell Harry I said hi and that I still want him over for dinner while y'all both are in town." Shailene nodded once and still felt her mother's gaze on her even as she turned her back to her and headed out the door. She heard herself call out a parting exclamation to her father but kept moving, kept walking until she was in her car and driving away from that gaze, from the questions her mother's mouth had yet to form.

She didn't know if she'd ever be ready to answer those questions.

It wasn't Nas' idea to attend the party.

In fact, had someone decided to leave it up to him, he would have spent the evening messing with Mrs. Clark - the kind African-American woman who still had yet to retire as a waitress at the diner even though she'd been working there when he had been a teenager - and hanging out with his brothers. The diner had been one of those ideal places late at night when he should have been home, but couldn't be. Mrs. Clark - Eva, she had always told him to call her, though his manners disallowed him to do so unless he was too worn out to continue them - had always given him a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes that he never had the heart to turn down, a glass of ice cold milk, and told him stories. He knew about how her mother's mother lived through the latter part of what historians called slavery in America, the Jim Crow era (which was still slavery, but "white people like to make themselves feel better by giving it another title, don't tell 'em I said that," she'd told him with a conspiratorial wink), and even the riots and change that did come from MLK's death. She told him how her grandparents moved their family up north, and how her mother met her father. Told him how she had rejected her husband until she just couldn't anymore, knew that though she acted like the man was the most annoying creature on the face of the planet, he was her creature and that she loved him like the sun loved to set - an act that just was supposed to be, an option because there was no other conceivable option but this inevitability.

However, though he could have spent the rest of the evening with her and his little brothers and told stories of his time away - amended stories that he knew she would see through better than most people because she had that way about her of seeing past his bullshit and deep into parts of him he thought were heavily guarded - Anjelo reminded him that he was supposed to go. The worst part was that his baby brother, now a senior in high school, knew what he was doing when he said it - knew that stating that very fact in front of Mrs. Clark would result in the expectant gaze she fixed upon him. "Now, honey..." She trailed off and Nas winced because he could feel the mothering before it began, and the burning ache that ensued wasn't going to be doused by the remaining quaff of Coca Cola, though he tossed it back like the shot he was going to need later anyway. "I know, I know - I'm going," he assured them all and kicked Tamiano's shin when his other brother, the one after him, snorted. Sighing reluctantly, Nas rose and dug out his wallet so that he could toss down the twenty dollar bill and the ten dollar bill, which would cover their meal and give Mrs. Clark the tip she always tried to refuse. "Since some people keep tryin' to get rid of me." He shot the older woman a teasing grin. She answered with swatting him with her dish towel, and Nas barked out a laugh.

Shoving his stool back into place, Nas eyed his brothers and he hoped they saw the plea in his eyes for help. "You two need a ride home?" Obviously, because Tamiano was a descended from the devil himself and hated Nas even after all he had ever done for the ungrateful brat, Tammy smirked before replying, "Oh, nah...we're just gonna spend time with our good friend Eva here...you go right ahead and have fun drinking your Schnopps and sangrias while the rest of us poor saps drink diner coffee and hot cocoa." Nas almost punched him and Tammy knew it too, a subtle flinch he tried covering up when Nas took a step towards him, the threat in his honey-dipped eyes. "I hate you - both of you!" He swore and ignored Anjelo's indignant squawk of "I didn't even do anything!" as he headed out the door. Out in the slight chill of the evening, Nas ran a hand over his face.

How anyone was capable of realistically conveying sympathy for the death of a classmate he was sure not everyone actually liked was beyond him, and was going to be the work of a good man. A better man...a man who clearly was not going to be him, he decided in the steps it took to get to his truck. Nas going for the sake of free, expensive booze and he didn't care what it said about him - that he should have felt bad for the dead and the loss some people were surely feeling. Matthew Brokenborough, especially from what he'd heard about the guy's time at Harvard, had not been a good man when alive. Nas didn't understand why anyone was willing to pretend that that was who he was in death. Nas sure wasn't going to.

Being back in town, Sutton definitely didn't enjoy very much. The last thing she wanted to do was be seen back in Oakhedge. She had an entirely new life that didn't involve anything from her hometown and she wanted to keep it that way. Sutton knew that somehow her parents were going to find out she was back and they would never miss out on an opportunity to put Sutton down for her life choices or embarrass her in front of her friends and anyone else who could've possibly been around at that point. It was already bad enough Sutton always seemed to do a terrific job at embarrassing herself as it was, last thing she needed was her parents' help in the matter.

The only reason Sutton was even slightly excited to be back in Oakhedge was so that she would be able to see Jackson again. Over the years, Jackson had been the only one out of the group of friends she had kept in contact with from her high school years. Even though they had still talked, she hadn't seen him in person since her sudden departure. The blonde smiled down at her phone as she began to send a message to Jackson.

To: Jax
Hey Jax. Just letting you know I'm back in town and reluctantly deciding to attend Rin's party. Hope to see you there! c:

Sutton sent the message and slid the phone back into her purse before climbing into her vehicle and headed to Rin's place. Sutton couldn't believe she thought it would be a good idea to attend this party she was throwing, mainly because every interaction they have with each other is anything other than pleasant. The last time she spoke with Rin, she wasn't okay with the reason she denied her request to join the company she was working for. Now Sutton stood at the girl's doorstep, practically setting herself up for nothing more than drama.

I guess it's time to unleash myself to the belly of the beast, Sutton thought to herself as she let out a sigh. She tucked her blonde strands behind her ear and reached up to ring the doorbell of the Davenport residence. Even when Sutton was in high school she was never caught dead at one of Rin's parties. Sutton couldn't believe she was attending one now. She stood there, preparing herself for anything that could fly her way upon the door opening and hoped beyond hope that someone else would've been at this party before her because she definitely wasn't wanting to be the first one to show up. That would mean Sutton would be left alone with Rin for an unpredictable amount of time. This was certainly not okay with her.

Oakhedge...oh, how Jackson had sworn he would never come back here again. He'd made a promise to himself to leave this all behind. Everything and everyone that once made him feel worthless. The last time he was here he was several inches shorter, with glasses and a bowl cut, hiding behind every textbook he could find. And he was miserable. This town held every bad memory and every insecure, terrified and terrorized part of him he never wanted to remember. When he learned about Mathew's death, the thought of coming for his funeral was something that never even remotely crossed Jax's mind. For whom and for what? Wasting his time and money to return to a town that oppressed him for a guy who's group of friends made it a point to make his life a living nightmare? The fact that Mathew died didn't make him any less of an asshole, and Jackson isn't willing to pretend that he wasn't. Not to mention, he'd run the risk of running into his parents, if they even lived here still. And Mathew's best buddy, Adrian. The name alone made Jackson's skin crawl.

And yet, if Jax said someone had forced him to come back, he'd be lying. He had his reasons for coming back despite every part of himself screaming that he shouldn't have. All of these reasons included people very dear to him. The moment he found out Zeke's uncle had also passed away, Jackson knew he would have to suck it up, put his big boy pants on, and come back if only to be there for his best friend even if Zeke never asked for it. His stubborn ass never would, but Jax knew he couldn't be left alone at a time like this. And then there were people like Sutton, Parker, and Nas. People that reminded Jackson that there was still a lot of good left in the world. If anything was keeping him here, aside from Zeke's situation, it was them. Jackson had to find them again. Find them and thank them for everything they'd done for him, even if they hadn't realized they did anything.

However, as he stood in front of the mirror, examining his party attire, a major part of him wanted to call the whole thing off. He could just search for them elsewhere, there was no need to sacrifice his sanity so early on in the trip. Zeke would understand, right? Running a hand through his wavy, dark locks, Jackson let out a cinematic sigh and let his body fall back onto the plush hotel bed. There wasn't much time left until the party was meant to start. Jackson just hoped he could catch Zeke before he left his house.

To: Izzy
MSG: So...I think I'm going to skip out on this whole party thing. Have fun without me, I'm sure you'll figure it out :D

Did Jackon feel guilty after hitting send? Maybe a little. But his best friend had always been much better at the party scenes than he was. Someone like Zeke didn't need him around, much less at a party. If he had to be honest, he was lucky to have him in his life at all. With another sigh, he set his phone down, only for it to ding again. It wasn't Zeke's response, as he imagined it to be, but rather someone he hadn't expected to message him today. Jax stared at Sutton's message for a moment, gently biting his lower lip. Should he tell her he wasn't going? Or should he just suck it up and go? Now the guilt in the pit of his stomach doubled, so before he could change his mind, he quickly types out a response.

To: Soo
MSG:I didn't think you'd go. But I guess if you're going to be there, I have no choice.

Standing on the porch of his childhood home, Zeke wasn't sure what he was going to do now. Uncle Andrew was gone, and it made him feel as if another hole had been shot into his heart, the very same heart that kept bleeding for two whole years now. The terror seemed to get only worse, and this poor boy didn't know what he would end up doing - would he be drowning into the pool of desperation or would he survive, just barely breathing in this bitter demolition that kept happening inside of his mind. Zeke knew for sure that he wasn't going to get any sleep for couple of months coming - hell, he wasn't able to sleep after that disaster anyhow. They kept telling him to take the medications, but he knew that it was a thin line to walk on - afraid to fall into the frantic, infinite circle of addictions, Zeke wasn't going to fall back. He couldn't, simply because of having made that ridiculous promise to Jax.

Sure, they all had secrets, some more than others and he knew that all of them were keen of keeping them. None the less, the tall boy kept his breath for a minute or two, he finally let the air fill his lungs again. It burnt... It burnt like living fire. Just like the fire he had felt when... No! He wasn't going to think about this. Not there, not in this city. No one was going to find it out. Not even Jax. "Get a grip, bruh," Zeke scolded himself in his mind. After he had abandoned swimming, diving and water all together, he still kept his breath while standing on land. It was as if a remainder, that maybe... maybe there was a chance to become cured of this demon inside of his heart and pick up his dream once more, but this 'maybe' seemed only to be a hallucination. Crouching over to the row of dried plants in several pots, he stuck fingers into one of them and found what he was looking for - the key in small, plastic bag! "Ahhaa! Gotcha'!"

It didn't take him long to get into the house, and as he did, Zeke noticed how everything had been covered with white cloth and he just smirked at this sight. Uncle Andrew had been dead only about a week or less, and they had already given up on this place and forgotten about him, although the funeral had not been held as of yet. After his father had called him, and announced Andy's death, Zeke had bluntly threatened his own father not to sell the house, but give it to him. It was small place, but cozy enough for the two guys in the past. It was perhaps the only place he had ever called 'home'.

He didn't know of why he was going to take part of this damned party, but he was still curious. One of his former classmates had died. His uncle had died. What was really going on? Walking into the kitchen, he lit a cigarette and just stared into the spacious backyard, letting his gaze slide over all those artistic sculptures in there, made out of trash, clay and metal. Andy had been a true artist, Zeke had always valued his talent, and his uncle had pushed him into swimming among many other things. A good, kind man who was complete opposite to his older brother, Zeke's father. "Ah, whatever. It's better if I got ready for this damn event," Zeke mumbled sharply, annoyed by the whole situation. From one slump back into the original one, he wasn't happy, but he was more curious than anything. He was going to find out what had happened to uncle Andy in one way or the other, that was something he had promised to himself. Getting changed into rather dandy outfit, he looked different and more fashionable than he had ever shown himself to all these people, rebellious even.

As he had gotten into his nice mustang, that had been waiting for him in the garage, and driven over to the hotel, where he knew Jax was staying at, he got the message at the right moment. Parking in front, music blasting from open windows, he had forgotten that he was listening to his own song, that Zeke had recorded couple of nights before taking the flight back to this dreadful town. He wasn't singing, he was rapping - something he had been experimenting with and well... something that Jax didn't know of yet.

To: Jaxy
"Yo! Get yo pretty ass down here, I am waiting!

This was sure going to be interesting, and he was half-excited to see how everyone reacted at his arrival.

Jared was currently faced with two difficult decisions that pondered throughout his thoughts as he had just stepped out of the shower. He walked over to the sink and lowered his head with his hands grasped along the sides of the porcelain white sink just mere inches away from him. Jared sighed softly then slowly lifted his head to stare at his reflection and saw someone that he wasn't really happy with. That someone was himself, and the two decisions that he had to deal with in his thoughts were going to Rin's gathering and hearing everyone ask him why he did not attend the funeral or getting back on his motorcycle to the airport to get on a jet.

He chose the latter and just decided to face the music and just be honest with everyone. Hopefully without making an asshole comment or being too sarcastic with them. Jared continued to think and think as he was getting ready and finally placed the final piece, his left shoe, onto his left foot then sat it down with another sigh. He rested his elbows onto his upper thighs and leaned down a little as he could not believe that he came back to Oakhedge after leaving so abruptly the last time. Jared kind of felt like that was also going to be brought up tonight and started thinking that maybe this was a mistake altogether.

Jared stood up and started to pack his luggage back up as he did not think he could do this. Shortly after, he had plopped back down on the bed and shoved his face into the palm of his hands, sniffling as he sobbed silently. Why did something such as this had to happen to Matthew, out of all people, why him? He had heard the rumors about Matthew but thought that they were just that, rumors but turns out that they weren't. He mustered up the strength to not cry again as he walked over to the bathroom and cleaned himself up before going back to where the bed was and gave himself one more look over. He was going to this party, no matter what and no matter who was going to confront him, he was going.

Jared walked out of his room and made sure the door was locked before going down the side flight of stairs toward his motorcycle and strapped on his helmet then straddled himself over his bike. The engine roared as soon as he turned the key that he stuck in the ignition and he slowly backed out of the parking space then got onto the road, heading toward Rin Davenport's residence. He just hoped that he could remember where she stayed. Luckily for him, he stayed at a hotel near her so her home wasn't too far away.

After he turned around two or maybe three corners and went on some back roads before popping up into a neighborhood, Jared had finally reached his destination. His engine roared but softened to a low hum as he turned the key and then silence fell as he shut off the engine. Jared's eyes flashed upon Rin's doorstep and squinted his eyes as someone was already standing there. From a far distance, he did not know who it was but he removed himself from his bike and kicked the kickstand out so that the bike could lean over but not fall over. His eyes then looked around the premises as he stuffed his hands inside of his jacket pocket with a slow trek up toward the front porch and stood beside the female there. It was Sutton and he just flashed her a half smile before he leaned over and rung the doorbell. This was it and there was certainly no turning back now.

Growing up, Shailene and Harry had lived about fifteen minutes apart, which was the excuse she used to give when she dropped him off at home back then. He was on the way to her house, she'd say, and Matthew would have done it, but he was watching his little sister while his parents went out for a night on the town. A complete lie after awhile, but back then, Shay had watched them eat it up, smile congenially, though their initial displeasure seemed evident in the way they kindly saw her off. Now, though, she was driving to the other side of town - a thirty minute endeavor that enabled her to shake off the prickly sensation that came with her mother's perceptive eyes. Distantly, bitter, she wondered, Ok, but where was this motherly concern when I started wearing long-sleeved shirts 'cause you couldn't see that your boss' son hit me? Did you give a fuck then? But it was always easy to drown out those negative thoughts and feelings with music, and driving with the windows down?

Driving with the windows, however, made Deanna pass the cemetery. Her mind desired not to delve into such thoughts any longer - they were going to a party, damn it, don't be that girl, you idiot - but her heart remembered the closed polished casket Matthew's body had lain in, the gold-rimmed picture frame that sat at its side depicting a smiling him, the one his mother was more at ease with. Not the one Shailene was familiar with. Frank Ocean crooned on her stereo system, but Shailene's thin smile dimmed. It had taken everything in her not to wear red, not to kick the stand that held his picture up, not to just scream and scream and scream because how did he deserve this? How did he deserve to be immortalized in someone else's undying, blind love for him? How did he get tears from strangers and friends and family members alike, when her tears had been shed alone, cold and shrouded by darkness from covers that weren't her own, and in a room not her own because she'd been too ashamed to go home to show her parents what he'd done? How did he deserve anything but the darkest pits of hell and contempt and judgement because those were the only things he deserved - because he'd told her that judgement and contempt were what she'd deserved?

Shailene had been went into the wellness center at Spelman roughly about three times. Each time resulted in her being told that she didn't process anger very well. She probably wasn't even processing grief very well, either. She hasn't gone back since.

Soon enough - thankfully, soon enough - she was pulling into the parking lot of Harry's hotel, one of the nicer ones. There was a Motel 6 that Shay will forever hate from the one time her aunt had stayed in it, and there had been a bedbug infestation. But this one was nicer and though she saw its name now, she was sure she'd forget it - as per the usual - in about five minutes. She drove the car into the parking space just outside the room on the bottom floor Harry had said he was staying in, and honked the horn. Which had been pointless because a second later, she pulled out her phone to text him anyway.

As he waited for Shay to come pick him up, Harry played around with his camera, headphones in, trying to distract himself. Saying he was looking forward to seeing Shay again just might have been the understatement of the year, but he'd had a moment where he felt like he was a teenager again. Waiting for Shailene to pick him up and praying that his parents didn't find out about the lies she'd spun with that angelic smile. His parents hadn't liked Shailene at first- but she'd been dating Matthew, and they hugely approved of him. Any connection to that name, that power, they wanted. They hadn't needed to know that Harry and Matthew were barely even friends.

As he flicked through the pictures, he landed on one self-portrait that sent a shiver down his spine and made bile rise in his throat. Despite the eyeliner, despite the outfit, he could see his father in that photo. He swallowed and deleted the photo without a second thought, suppressing the temptation to change his outfit into something so much bigger, something his father would never be seen dead in. It was only now that he was out the far side, now that he was actually happy, that he could appreciate how truly miserable he'd been all the way back when. The time spent with his friends- his real ones, not just the ones his parents approved of- were just bright spots in a dark night.

He vaguely heard the horn outside, but it was the text that made him realise who it was. He grinned, quickly patting his pockets to check he had everything, and ran outside to Shay's car. This was perhaps the only thing he had missed about home, these drives where they could talk about anything and everything. He climbed into the car, still grinning. "Hey! Oh my god, you look great!" He gushed. "So, you need to update me on everything that's been going on in your life. It's been way too long." It hadn't been, not really- they'd seen each other at the funeral. Even if Harry hadn't been that close to Matthew, he had still felt a weird obligation to go. But he and Shay hadn't been able to talk, not properly, not like they used to.

The doorbell rang, startling Rin out of her reverie. She carefully got to her feet and brushed her dress down with her free hand. As she got to the door, there was a sudden surge of fear, a fear that it mightn't be one of her schoolmates at all, but someone come for her, for revenge. The doorbell rang a second time, and she swallowed that fear, fixed a perfect smile on her face, and opened the door.

Anyone else's smile might have slipped upon seeing who stood there, but not Rin's. Neither Jared or Sutton were her biggest fan, and the feeling was mutual. She just didn't understand them, not really. Rin's boss had asked her to get in contact with Sutton about offering her a job. Apparently Sutton was good, really good. So Rin had called her. And for some reason, Sutton had just turned her down. Not even pretending to think about it. Sure, company loyalty was important, but ambition was moreso. Rin had passed on Sutton's refusal to her boss, and her name hadn't even come up since. But here she was now.

"Sutton! Jared! It's so wonderful to see you both, how have you been?" She asked, her beaming smile still in place. "Please, grab yourselves a drink, there should be food ready once we get a few more people. Three may be a crowd but it's not exactly a party, is it?" She added with a laugh, sipping her own champagne. She'd made sure to get a wide variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. She couldn't remember what everyone liked, but did know at least that champagne wasn't everyone's taste. Even one as expensive and as light and crisp as this.

Having Jared here was doing nothing to ease her worry. She didn't know the exact details, but he'd been involved with something her family had also been involved in, and not in a good way. She didn't particularly have any real desire to hold much of a conversation with him, but she also knew she didn't have a choice. "So, what are you guys up to these days?" She asked, sipping delicately on her champagne.

Jared continued to stand there alongside Sutton while his hands traveled and rested inside of his jacket's pockets now. His ears heard footsteps approaching the front door and it was Rin that had answered the door. That smiled placed on her face made him scoff a little and her saying that it was wonderful to see them made him scoff even more. Is it really though? Jared thought to himself as he shrugged his shoulders at her question but did not answer her.

With his hands still placed inside of his jacket's pockets, he walked past Rin and entered into her residence. His eyes glanced around the premises while listening to Rin and stifled a chuckle, along with her laugh, at her question. He had immediately gone over toward the beverage area and picked up the bottle of champagne along with a wine glass. Champagne wasn't really his favorite but it'd do, for now. Jared saw the other drinks there but haven't tasted champagne in a long time so he had decided on that.

Jared went over to where Sutton and Rin were and took a seat, where he poured the champagne into the glass then sat the bottle and glass down in front of him. He had taken off his jacket then leaned back in his seat after he had picked his glass back up and took a small sip from it. Her attempt at trying to make conversation amused him a little as he eyed her once she asked her question. He had no desire to respond but took one more sip from his glass, smacked his lips together and leaned up just a little.

His eyes focused on her while he parted his lips to respond. "Well, since you asked, I've been up to much better things after leaving this place." Jared responded bluntly then clasped his glass in between his hands. "What about you, Rin?" He had taken another sip from the glass then chugged the rest down and proceeded to set the glass down in front of him again except with a little more force this time. Jared then leaned back into his seat again and clasped his hands together and rested them in his lap.

As he stared at the white hotel room ceiling, Jackson contemplated all the options for his next move. Options one through three all involved some half-assed excuse about why he couldn't make it to the party followed by a last minute flight change and a one-way ticket back to London. Option four was a bit more complicated, but it also involved his ditching the party in some unnoticed fashion. He used to be rather skilled at being invisible, surely he could do it again. He was rather pleased with all of them, as none of the options required him to actually stay or participate in this gathering. If he was slick enough, he could steal Zeke's car keys and take Sutton out for a drink. She didn't need to say anything for Jax to know she wanted to be there about as much as he did.

In the midst of his scheming, a subtle thumping of car speakers made their way into Jackson's hotel room. For a moment, he simply ignored it, thinking nothing of it aside from the occasional flashy hotel guest. However, moments after, his phone buzzed right beside his ear and Jax immediately connected the sound to the message and a name. Seriously Zeke?. Surely enough, there was a message demanding his presence downstairs. After taking in a large amount of oxygen, the boy pushed himself up off the comfort of the mattress and slipped on his shoes. There were so many reasons why he shouldn't even go. Aside from the fact, Jax had never liked parties, this place would be full of two types of people. Those he didn't know or barely knew, and those that used him as both an emotional and physical punching bag during his entire high school career and made him a social outcast. Neither of those options sounded very inviting. And yet, a small part of him wanted to go, if only to show up in Zeke's expensive car and make the loudest entrance possible. To show off his new look, his new hair, his new attitude, his perfected social skills, and newly acquired beer pong tricks. To confidently shove it in their faces that Jackson Park is taking no one's bullshit.

With a sudden impulse, Jax grabbed his phone and wallet, complete with hotel room key, and took the elevator to the lobby. The moment he stepped outside and spotted the flashy Mustang, he knew this was it. "You couldn't have picked something less...I don't know...loud?" he teased, a smirk gracing his lips as he made himself comfortable in the passenger seat. "Listen, I need you to drive me to the airport asap! I just got word that my cat is very ill. I need to be there for my fur baby." Jax spoke with genuine urgency in hopes that Zeke wouldn't realize that he didn't even have a cat to begin with. He brought his right thumb to his lips, nervously biting its tip, as the car took off and away from the safety of the Ramada. Whatever happened to come next, Jackson was almost certain he was not prepared for it.

Moments after Sutton's arrival, she heard a bike roaring behind her. With a bit of curiosity she took a peek behind her, only to find Jared. She returned her gaze back to the front door. Sutton never really knew Jared all that well so she had no reason to like him or hate him, she just never really knew him. Sometimes that worried her more than having people around who knew who she was.

A few footsteps were heard close behind her as she heard him make his way up the stairs before he paused beside her. Sutton glanced over at him, only to be met with a half smile. The female gave him a soft smile in return just as she heard her phone going off. It was a message from Jackson. She smirked at the message and shook her head before she started her response.

To: Jax
I'm surprised I'm going as well. I'm actually already here. I guess I'll see you when you get here then.

Sutton sent the message and slid her phone back into her small handbag that hung across her chest. When the door finally opened, her attention went straight towards a face she had been dreading to see the entire time she was back in Oakhedge. Though it was her own fault for even accepting the invite to her party to begin with, but Sutton just needed to get out of that musky old hotel room and try to have some sort of fun. Sutton was taken by even more surprise when she heard Rin's voice. She seemed happy to see her...Had the alcohol already kicked in? Sutton swallowed her thoughts and gave a fake smile as she stepped into the home.

Rin's offer for drinks immediately made her feel that was exactly what she was going to need to get through the night. Sutton walked over to the drink table and poured herself a glass of wine before taking a couple sips from it. Her attention was brought back to Rin as she spoke up again. "So what are you guys up to these days?" At that question, Sutton looked over at Rin and returned her attention back at the glass in her hand. There was no way she was going to answer Rin's question. The woman already knew where Sutton worked, she didn't need to give her any more information about her life. At least not directly from her own lips.

Thankfully the silence was cleared when Jared decided to answer her question, "Well, since you asked, I've been up to much better things after leaving this place." Jared responded bluntly then clasped his glass in between his hands. "What about you, Rin?"

Upon hearing Jared's answer to his question, she gave a slight nod, agreeing with his words. Sutton had been doing a lot better since she left Oakhedge. But there is a fear inside of her she won't even admit to herself. She is scared that being back here will reopen old wounds, turn her into the person she worked so hard to stay away from. That was definitely not the road she wanted to go back down.

Immediately upon seeing Harry emerge from his room, a grin split across Shailene's face and her eyes lightened up, the ghosts of her melancholy thoughts leaving her the closer her old friend came. She giggled at his compliment before immediately remarking, "And you better come out here lookin' like a sexier, younger version of Jared Leto!" She had noticed Harry's style of dress at the funeral; it was just as subdued as it was now, but for Shailene, it was an entirely new look altogether. Not something she was familiar with when it came to the boy - no, man - in question. Harry's fashion had been dated and not for his age, if she was being honest, but Shailene had never commented much on it save for the few times his eyes had strayed too long on a clothing item at the mall she knew he didn't own. "No, seriously! This is a look and now we have no choice but to take a selfie!

Barely even a breath later and Shailene was pressing into Harry's side, angling her phone just right after pressing the front lights of her car so that the camera caught onto their faces better. Flash still on, she only gave Harry a quick, teasing chastisement, "C'mon - don't fight this. As long as you're in town and you're with me, I'm flooding my profile with your cute ass and seeing how many DMs I get 'cause someone's choosin'. This is just a reunion pic." She held the screen and a barrage of pictures were taken, though Shailene knew only about three or four would be posted. Before college, she would have never imagined being active on Instagram - let alone being a model on the social media site and getting free samples from various brands so long as she shouted them out. Matthew would have never allowed it; there would've been too many gazes - male ones, in particular - on her. However, somewhere between the impulsive need to change something about herself physically - the purple hair - and the desire for it to be seen - even though she made damn sure to block him on everything - and she was randomly creating an account. One picture turned into another, and once the followers came, the game had changed.

Still in a giggly disposition, Shailene countered, "Too long? Says the guy who totally left a bitch high and dry before prom! Dude, you need to get me updated! When did we decide to give Pete from Fall Out Boy a run for his money?" She winked conspiratorially as she added, "Though you aren't even on the same level with baby boy 'cause you. Look. Amazing." The words all came out in a rush, but the exclamation was genuine when Shailene gestured at Harry's...well, everything. The boy she remembered and the man who sat in her car shared a remarkable set of similarities, but his overall aura - his energy - was different than before. Lighter. And it made something in Shailene ache for the familiarity, but elated at the possibilities as she began to pull out of the haphazard parking spot.

The thing of it was that while the nostalgia that came from seeing some of his favorite childhood spots hit as he drove, it also filled Nas with a discomfort that made him shift in his seat from time to time. Rin Davenport lived on the other side of town, away from him and his family's much smaller home. The diner, though, was in the middle, and so it only granted him a ten minute drive. Ten minutes that seemed to pass him by quicker than he anticipated because before long, he was cruising down a very familiar street with a very familiar, large home that damn near took up half of her side of the block.

Back in the day, Nas had not attended too many of Rin Davenport's parties. It hadn't been his scene, not unless he was really itching for cash and selling in the darkest corner of her home was the only option. He preferred the other house parties with red plastic cups and cheap beer, with beer pong and sweat and grinding with T-Pain busting everyone's eardrums out until a neighbor called the cops about the noise level. He had always been more comfortable there. Here, especially now, Nas wasn't comfortable. He was back to those younger days when it was clear that the only shopping he could do was with coupons, and that was if he found the right ones and didn't just need to get the cheapest option, while peers like Rin and Matthew didn't have to blink at price tags. He had never been bitter at their luck, however, not when Matthew's privilege clearly made him a dick just like the rest of his band of followers. Rin hadn't been like that, not really. Nas hadn't known her much back then, but he had had no reason to dislike her. He didn't have a reason to like her, either.

And yet here I am, he thought wryly, finding a parking spot on the next block. There were cars parked along Rin's block and he saw scattered groups and couples emerging from vehicles, a few of them lingering at their cars to catch up with old friends and others approaching the Davenport residence. Works for me, he decided. It meant that he could take his time, or at least try to take his time in his walk to the house. If he managed to just follow the crowd, when the doors were opened, he could just slip in without any awkward interactions. He could potentially just be another face in a faceless sea of classmates everyone was going to forget about the second they go their separate ways once more.

Sure, he had missed Mathew' funeral and he really didn't particularly care either as they had never been close. These two used to butt heads constantly, perhaps more intensely than it had been with Nas, while with Nas it had always been playful on Zeke's part. They just happened to be so similar... Aside all of that, Zeke had been planning to go to the cemetery and meet the dude eye on eye... or whatever there was left of him behind. The monster was dead and this was the only respect he would offer - one should respect the dead, right? Sure... he wasn't thrilled by this idea, and although he was often stubborn, Zeke wasn't a real bastard, at least not deep within. Deep within which was covered by all the bling and flashiness that he engulfed himself into for the past years.

Rin had been probably one of the few at the becoming party, who had frequented the circles he had back at school, so she was going to be the most familiar aside Jax. That woman was probably the same as ever - proud and snarky, but it didn't matter. He had returned for his own goals and if playing private investigator was one of them, then he was going to go for it. Nothing was going to stop him from going after the truth that was most likely hidden behind Uncle Andy's sudden death. Nothing.

Waiting for his bestie, Zeke' fingers were playing on the wheel of the car along with the beat echoing out from his vehicle and gaining quite curious stares. He didn't care. He wasn't doing this to gain attention, but he did enjoy pissing people off with his presence. Having picked it up after all that had gone down, he did everything to get out of this noose around his throat. Leaning back, he practically grinned to himself, as he saw Jackson coming down and sat into the car beside him. "Nope," he simply stated and offered a playful wink at his friend, taking off from the spot with a loud and low roar of the car, heading towards Davenport Residence. "But you never know, I can still surprise you," he added, then partially ignored what Jax had just told him.

He didn't want to admit to it, but he had to say it: "Look, dude," the bad boy started, "I wanna say that I am super thankful for you coming in. Even if it just for my sake and... maybe, if you can bring your invisible pet over or... just....," he paused, feeling like his usual self was out of it and rambling, "...stay, okay. I need you." Biting down on his lower lip, Zeke felt like he was heating up. Why was he so nervous to ask of this favor from his best friend? They were family... hopefully. Finding a spare pair of keys to his house, Zeke tossed them over to that handsome fellow beside him and simply said, nearing to their location: "Here. Stop wasting your money and come stay with me. I have one more extra room now." Another request, hoping that he wasn't going over the board. The kind of effect Jax had on him was strange, specially seeing each other in person after such a long time. The usual, overflowing confidence that Zeke generally had was now replaced with soft, purring lion cub.

He noticed the crowd that had already arrived at the location, and he didn't care to turn the music down, but actually turned it up a notch - popular, underground hip-hop blasting out, nor did he care if the recognized him at this day of age. He had matured, yet he had become something else - perhaps better version of himself, perhaps the illusion of what he wished to be. He apologized to Jax: "You are free to punish me later. Sorry." Zeke's demeanor changed quite a bit, but he knew that Jackson would understand in the end. Circling around, he was able to find empty spot near to the household with ease, and went for it, stopping. He knew he had attention seeking entrance and he felt satisfied enough.

Even if Harry spent most of his time playing with cameras, taking more than the odd self-portrait, something in him still hesitated at Shailene's demand for a selfie. If it was just something that would be between the two of them, maybe framed somewhere, he wouldn't have. But he hadn't been living under a rock- he'd seen Shailene's instagram take off, and he knew exactly how big she was. A lot of people would more than likely see this. The desire to slink back into the shadows felt familiar- and that was what made him lean in for the photo, starting with a deliberately overdramatic expression and then breaking into a laugh. And embracing it felt kinda good.

The reminder that he'd just... left made him feel a little guilty. But things had moved so quickly, and he'd just been so glad to get out of there. It wasn't like he'd ghosted anyone, but he'd been deliberately vague about why he was leaving. But Shay's compliment snapped him out of it, making him grin a little bashfully. "Thank Freddie Mercury, honey. My aunt Maria got me started onto Queen, and now I'm an eighties junkie. Honestly, the androgyny of that era? Iconic. The drama? There's nothing like it these days. This," he said, gesturing to the eyeliner smudged around his eyes, "all started when Maria was throwing a costume party. I was completely stuck for ideas, so we went generic glam rock. Makeup, backcombed hair, eyeliner, blush, eyeshadow, leather, I was looking like I had just walked off Top of the Pops and I loved it. The blush and backcombing did not stay, but the leather jackets and eyeliner sure as hell did. Maria's been great, she's just... supported it without a second thought. I think I could walk downstairs wearing a pair of heels at this point and she'd just make sure I had blister plasters before going out."

It was still so foreign to him, having someone who helped shape and mould him, but without controlling, and with complete unconditional support. He could go back to the oversized jumpers, the plain shirts, the shapeless t-shirts tomorrow, and she wouldn't bat an eyelid. She might check in with him to make sure he was okay, but if that was what he wanted, it was what she wanted.

"However, I don't have the vocal range required to actually do the whole glam rock thing, so I'm studying to become a social worker and playing around with my camera the whole time," he added with a grin and a shrug. "So, are you going to tell me how you're doing now?"

Rin was having to resist the temptation to scowl at Jared, his behaviour reeking of cockiness, and his reply just adding to that. Instead she just smiled and shrugged. "I'm actually working with Sophia McLemore, the editor of Belle magazine. It's amazing, I've been to some huge events, met some amazing people," she said with an elegant smile, deciding that mentioning the facts she'd been to fashion weeks all over the world and had even modeled for Dior in Paris was unnecessary. Upon the doorbell ringing again, she elegantly excused herself from the situation.

The distraction of people coming in gave her an excuse to avoid going back to talk to either Jared or Sutton. Instead, she could effortlessly circulate, chatting to those she knew and welcoming those she was less familiar with. Her glass eventually emptied itself, and she made her way back to the bar to refill her glass. She knew by the lingering stares that followed her around the room that most people weren't even really here to reunite or catch up. They were here to finally get a look in on the infamous Davenport house, see how they really lived. She was just another part of the glamour, another part of the furniture they wanted to sneak a look at. She played along, smiling and laughing and playing the part of the perfect host. There was one or two people she knew from her old friend group, the rich kids who always seemed to float over everyone else. But it was only now that Rin realised she knew nothing about them and that they knew nothing about her.

It was stupid, and she was starting to realise that Matthew was not the type of person that she should miss. But he'd always been so good about making you feel like he was your best friend, like he was so glad to see you. He was good at lying, it seemed. The steady influx of people at least gave her a distraction as she greeted them, stepping outside into the fresh air for a few minutes. It was there she heard the thumping bass from a short distance away and raised an eyebrow, inquisitive as to see who exactly it was.

There were still so many questions lingering on the edges of Shailene's mind - where were his parents? did he still talk to them? has he seen them since coming home? why did you leave me? - but the degree of warmth in his explanation stopped her mouth, made her smile even as she drove and listened. Even the way Harry expressed himself through speech was different; not different to the extent that she felt like she was interacting with a completely brand new person, but there was an openness about it she couldn't recall seeing too often when they were younger.

Chuckling at his redirection, Shailene drummed her fingertips on the top of the steering wheel, making a turn past the library that would lead along a long road with nothing but greenery and cable poles with strings high up in the air to connect them. "What's there to say? After graduation, I left, decided that my favorite color oughta be in my hair on a really, really drunken whim that just so happened to go right, and decided to give into the societal vanity derived from social media and even started capitalizing off of it to help pay for school," she explained, though she followed her last point with a playful wink. "Where I still am, by the way. Five year computer science program that's kicking my ass. Don't ask me what comes next 'cause I honestly have not thought that far ahead." She didn't include Matthew, figured it all went without saying. She wasn't shedding no tears at his grave; there was no small memorial in her room or heart anywhere.

Besides, despite how dismissive or overwhelmed by her program she sounded, Shailene loved it. She had always been fascinated with computers, with how they worked and how they could be torn apart and put back together again, how they can be remade. IT work seemed imminent in her future, but she was also pretty sure she could find work anywhere, so she wasn't particularly set on anything just yet. It felt good to study something she genuinely loved in an environment that genuinely loved her and which she can love without hesitation. She wasn't sure what she was going to do when graduation came. "Still, though," she exclaimed, wrapping slender fingers around the steering wheel and flashing Harry a smile. "It's so crazy to see everyone come out after all this time. Can you believe how long it's been since the last time any of us have been to a Rin Davenport party? I remember feeling like shit when I saw those invites go out only to never get one in eighth grade.

In another life, had it been anyone else, Nas would have stopped to appreciate the music. It was more of his style than any of the dubstep foolishness topped with a dollop of that pop craze that made him need five different joints before he could take them, the norm for the parties his former classmates attended. Sure, they might have added a few of the mainstream hip hop tracks, to which he had to admit taking the time to enjoy from time to time, but underground hip hop was actually a bit more of Nas' taste. Yet and still, despite his initial nodding along to the music whose volume had randomly increased just as Nas was crossing the lush lawn, the stop he made to investigate only resulted in a disbelieving, "Son of a bitch..." And Nas continuing on his pursuit of the interior of Rin Davenport's home and the bar that would hopefully supply him with a glass of a really, really strong whiskey.

If he were being honest, Nas knew there was no real reason for the animosity found in his former relationship with Zeke Moore, whom with narrowed eyes he had been able to recognize outside from the small distance between them. At least, there was no real reason other than being two surprisingly similar people, almost too similar. To the point that all they could do in that scenario was clash. They were older now, he supposed. Perhaps it would be different. Nas had to snort derisively at that. Yeah, right, he thought. The only way that would happen was if Zeke didn't actively seek out attention and considering the blast of music that was unnecessary, but definitely announced his arrival, that was asking for the impossible. So, with hands shoved into his pockets, Nas navigated through the foyer, noting Rin as she interacted with guests but doing well to not bring any of her attention to himself. It was probably good manners to greet the host, but they had never been close. Never interacted much save for passing tests back down their row so that everyone received one, or a passing apology when one brushed against the other in a crowded hallway.

One face did, however, give him pause. Out of muscle memory, he had been on his way to where Rin usually had the bar and the drink set-up, exchanging quick pleasantries with a few people he might have called something akin to friends when his eyes fell on a familiar set of shoulders and dark eyes...except he was different. Not too different that Nas didn't recognize him, but enough for something in him to feel as thrown as he sounded as he inquired, "Yoooo...Jared, is that you?"

Despite Jackson’s best efforts to be upset with Zeke, he never could. Whether it was now or several occasions before this, he somehow always managed to charm his way out of things and though Jax should have been irritated by it, he simply admired him for that skill. Though, in all honesty, Jackson had never been one to get angry or hold grudges, no matter what monstrosity was done to him. And believe me, there were several. Zeke using flashy cars and unnecessarily loud music were barely something for Jax to bat an eyelash at, and considering the current events, the guy was convinced it was simply his friend’s way of coping with it all. While Jackson had become the kind of person that blurted out every little emotion that came to mind, Zeke was quite the opposite. And perhaps that’s what caught him off guard the most.

”just…stay, okay. I need you” Jackson’s dark eyes settled on Zeke’s face, the request setting in as he attempted to catch the keys being thrown in his direction. In all their years of friendship, he’d never seen the guy be this…sincere. Both with Jackson and with himself. Admitting that he needed help and company wasn’t something Zeke did often, or ever for that matter, leaving Jax at a loss for words. After the initial shock settled and gave way to relief, Jackson’s lips curled into somewhat of a satisfied smile, one hand slipping the keys into his jacket pocket. ”Thought you’d never ask.” he teased, having never expected anything remotely close to this. In fact, a lot of things that happened after Jackson decided to leave Oakhedge had been unexpected, one of them being his and Zeke’s friendship. A flashy troublemaker and an honor roll’s wallflower didn’t exactly scream “the perfect match”.

Several turns and underground hip-hop songs later, the two made it to the Davenport estate, officially marking Jackson’s first time being here. He and Rin weren’t exactly friends during high school, in fact, Jackson wasn’t even sure she knew of his existence. Glamorous and powerful Trinity Davenport had no time for people like him, and he’d never had the courage to talk to her. Maybe this was the perfect opportunity to change that. ”Actually, I really needed a flashy entrance.” Jackson stated as the car came to a complete stop. It was the small push he needed to keep him here, if only for a little longer than he originally planned. By the time they made it to the front door, the place was already filling up. Some people he recognized, others he’d never seen before. His first mission, however, was to find Sutton. The moment they walked inside, his eyes searched the crowd for a small, blonde cutie, finding several familiar faces amid his quest. One of them being Rin herself. Deciding to make his search a bit easier, Jax pulled out his phone, sending Sutton a quick message.

Jared had already made quite the impression, even though he had been inside of the residence for only a few minutes. He was happy with himself outwardly but internally, he was unhappy with the person that he have become after being away for so long. His gaze bounced over toward Sutton, who sat there rather quietly, not that he wanted her to talk or anything because he did not really know her all that well but still, wonders why she was so silent. His eyes flashed back over toward Trinity, who had answered his question in typical Trinity fashion. Jared rolled his eyes, still leaned back in his seat with his hands clasped over his lap.

Rin had gotten up to leave once the doorbell rang again and he just scoffed and shrugged his shoulders while leaning up and grasped the champagne bottle around its neck then leaned back again. ”Whatever.” He’d mutter under his breath and took a big swig from the bottle of champagne then dropped it from his lips and wiped his mouth with his sleeve. People were coming in and going out repeatedly and some he recognized and others he didn’t. Jared just continued to stay in his seat and drink directly from the bottle until someone he knew would enter the premises. Of course, as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for because Jared got it.

It was his brother from another mother that had greeted him upon his entry and his question made Jared raise a slight brow. He stood up so that he didn’t feel so towered over by Nas and walked over toward him, still with the champagne bottle in his hand. ”Yeah, it’s me. What’s up?” He’d ask whenever he went over to stand beside the person that he was the closest with, well besides Shailene, and the person that almost damaged him by continuously giving him drugs. Though, Jared had to share the blame because he did keep going to Nas to feel some type of way besides the way that he was feeling at the time.

”You sounded surprise to see me here. Didn’t think that I’d come or something?” He’d ask, recalling his greeting from a few moments ago as he had a brow raised up slightly toward him. An assortment of emotions swept through Nas all at once: elation that he was seeing a face he had honestly not anticipated though wanted to see, a rush of anger he had never known he had felt until the second Jared spoke, and hurt that he knew for a fact he’d buried damn near four years ago. Still, though Nas was Nas, and though he felt such torrent feelings, he ultimately stuck to the first: elation.

”Um, yeah,” he exhaled on a chuckle, taking the last step that separated them to give his old friend - no, his brother - a side hug, followed by a sharp clap on the back as he took in this new...really new version of Jared. ”Last I checked, you were - shit, where the hell have you been, man? Didn’t even think you’d know about what happened to Matthew, let alone actually come all the way out.” There was that hurt again, this irrational surge of it because after all these years, Jared just finally showed up. The one person he’d been missing - the second person to just abandon him after he was supposed to have been family - and the guy shows up, and it’s not even really to see him. Not to explain why he ran away, not to see Nas. It was for a dead guy neither of them liked. How the hell else did one feel when they came to such a conclusion?

Jared made a small facial expression at the side hug, which he did not return. All that mushy-gushy stuff did not sit right with him anymore. He lost those feelings long ago. He nearly took a small step forward with the clap on his back then looked up toward Nas, composing himself once they broke apart from each other. ”I’ve been here. I’ve been there. Never really stayed anywhere for too long.” He lied through his teeth before he’d shrug at his last statement. Of course, he heard, it posted on everyone’s social media, which he occasionally took sneak peeks of because of nostalgia feels. ”Yeah. Heard it through the grapevines. Why wouldn’t I have come, Nas? I am not that terrible of a person.”

Jared fully responded then just thought about how close him and Nas really could’ve been before he had disappeared without a trace a few years back. He did not really like Matthew after Shailene was taken from him right underneath his nose. That might’ve been Matthew’s plan all along, or so he thought. Speaking of Shailene, he had wondered where she was and if she was going to make an appearance. Jared cannot imagine what she must be going through right about now but felt for her a little bit. Only a little bit, not much.

Here and there? That’s what Jared decided to stick with. Nas wasn’t the most emotive guy on the block; he knew that about himself. On most days, people assumed that he only had one emotion and that was growly. He didn’t think that was the case, but it was whatever. You can’t change people’s minds. But Jared’s blase attitude about literally being probably everywhere but where Nas would have wanted him had him shoot the other guy an incredulous look. Nas didn’t bother mentioning how empty the hug they shared had felt. ”No...nah, man, I wouldn’t say you are,” he said slowly, carefully, unsure about how to navigate this new territory he found himself in with someone he thought would feel a bit more familiar. This didn’t feel familiar; he might as well have been talking to a complete stranger.

”So, what have you been up to? Still in the drug dealing biz?” Jared asked almost a little too loud for anyone that was around them to hear. He had chugged back a few gulps from the champagne bottle again after he had asked. Jared partaking in alcohol reminded Nas of the shots he swore he was having while stuck in this house, but the question made him long for the burn even more. ”No, actually,” he replied, shifting on his feet, composing himself better at the dark cloud that seemed to descend over his thoughts.

Nas had been doing well, he supposed. Being back in Oakhedge had not been exactly pleasant in terms of where his mind had gone, but it was nothing like Jared bringing it up and to the forefront of his mind. He could still picture pale skin in the moonlight, ghostly pale with lips tinged blue and eyes rolled to the back of her head so far that he mostly saw white. Nas blinked back the shudder that threatened to overtake him, gritted his teeth before continuing, ”No, I gave that up a long time ago. Actually, I stopped some time after you left, to be honest. Wasn’t making as much as I was before.” The last part was a bold-faced lie. Seeing Jared giving in to his own needs for the drugs Nas provided had made him take a second look at what he was doing; seeing the way Michelle died scarred him for life. ”Well, that’s a shame. I could really use a buzz right about now.” Jared responded because he wanted to, no he needed to, feel a little bit numb within this moment. He honestly felt some type of way with the way the atmosphere was surrounding him. ”Trust me, no it’s not,” Nas said immediately, hands back in his pockets again. He refused to go back to drugs, at least the hard ones. Never again. With that thought in mind, from his left pocket, he pulled out a pre-wrapped joint, his supply having come in just before he returned to Oakhedge. He liked it better from outside their small town; more possibilities - more healthier, and less you-could-probably-die-cuz-you-don’t-know-what’s-mixed-in-your-weed-like-I-do possibilities. ”There ain’t nothing I sold you back then that this can’t get you just as numb over. I can promise you that.” He told the other guy, extending the stick to him. Nas had a pretty big stash; he had prepared for the trip and knew that some part of him was going to need more than his usual. It was probably a splurge he was going to feel when it was time to go back home, a loss of a random sandwich craving near his job, but it was worth it for this shit town and its shit memories.

Jared’s eyes flashed down toward the pre-wrapped joint and nearly went ballistic. He knew that he could always count on Nas to distribute the good stuff and he hung on to his words before he replied. ”We should go ahead and light it up then, Nas.” He would’ve said bro there normally but right now, things weren’t so normal between them or anybody else for that matter. Too bad that it seems like he was officially done with the drugs. Jared could’ve used it while he was in town. ”You see anything stronger than champagne over there, man?” Nas asked, nodding over to where the rest of the drinks were. ”Never saw you as much of a champagne guy before.” Jared eyes fell upon the bottle of champagne in his hands at his statement then eyed the beverage area to respond toward Nas. ”Uh.. I don’t know, man. I just grabbed the largest thing I saw.” He said then commented on his previous statement. Nas was already chuckling over his words. That sounded about right, about Jared enough for his shoulders to lose a bit of the tension it developed. ”Well, gotta change it up every now and then. Plus, I do not think little Miss Trinity over there would appreciate me getting drunk at her…” His eyes scanned the room before they fell upon Nas again. ”Whatever this is because it damn sure isn’t a party or else, someone would have a lamp shade over their head and dancing on top of the coffee table.”

Jared had managed to get a laugh out over his lips, shaking his head as it felt good to be around Nas. Even though, he wasn’t showing it right now, he did miss Nas but not for just the drugs but for the brotherhood that they had established together. ”Maaaaannn...I don’t - I don’t know what this is either, to be honest,” he admitted and glanced about the room. ”Just looks like a bunch of bored people wanting to see what’ll happen next. Pretty sure they’ve all got a running bet over which one of us gonna keel over and die next.” Even before, when Nas did attend a Davenport party, things had been livelier, worth the awe and admiration that Rin managed to derive from their peers. This...this was a completely different thing entirely. And though he felt a little bit more at ease at the moment, there was still something nigging him at the back of his neck, as if something could happen at any minute.

Jared laughed a bit too hard at his comment about the people that was around them. Rin was usually a good hostess but today, it seemed like she wasn’t up for the task, given the circumstances. Jared looked around before he had leaned over and rested his face on Nas’ shoulder before he tapped him on the shoulder in the process. ”You know, I don’t think there’s anyone in the back. We could go ahead and smoke that joint that was mentioned earlier.” His words were almost teasing like but he really did mean it. This place was dead, for sure, along with some of the people that were there too. If it had been a few years earlier, the party and house would be lit but now, crickets would have a parade in this place. It sucked. He lifted his head up just a little then rested the palm of his hand on Nas’ shoulder and looked at him. ”Come on, it’d be like old times.” Jared was practically begging and pleading at this point. It was his usual act way back whenever he used to do the hard drugs, which he received from Nas.

Nas chuckled again, tucking the joint between a few of his fingers to hide it from unwanted eyes. He probably should have recognized better Jared’s need to be supplied for what it is, but it was that familiarity he had been looking for that Nas ultimately succumbed to. He’d never go back to anything harder, anything stronger and more liable to kill. He didn’t have the heart. But this right here - and with an old friend, at that? Sign him the fuck up. ”Yeah, sure,” he exclaimed. ”Lead the way, man.” It did not take Jared a second to lift his foot up off of the ground and head towards the back, his free hand waving for Nas to follow him.

"Your wish is my command," Zeke laughed over Jax' comment on the flashy entrance they just pulled. Before he let his friend separate from him, he just simply stated: "If you are in trouble, find me. And as for our promise," he had gotten closer to Jax, having almost no distance between them, "I will be sober for you." He turned around, and nodded to someone he noticed and recognized, but that was all the care he had for his former friend.

So, this was it. The party, which Zeke wasn't too fond of at that moment. Sure, he had been to a lot different ones, and this kind was no stranger to the Moore' offspring. His family bathed in money, and although uncle Andy was always seemingly a lot more poor, Zeke knew that the man had money... not that he really cared, since his deals in drug industry brought him just enough and although his mother kind of hated the kid, she still spilled quite the big allowance on him. Stopping the car, he stepped out and noticed people staring down at him - some surprised, some not quite recognizing that face of his. Instead of the pretense bad boy, there was no a real one. Wearing the designer outfit, he absolutely shone out of everyone and it made him smirk to himself.

Trailing after Jackson like a lost puppy, Zeke found himself staring Jax' back. That kid had grown up quite a lot, and he had witnessed it all as the time had passed. Although there had been a distance between them, he still had felt closer than ever. All these long calls during nights, when Zeke wasn't able to sleep. All those long calls during rehab. All those long calls just for being there for him. Was Zeke really this blessed to have Jax in his life? Izzy felt like Jax had become his guardian angel, like his...

His attention was caught by small group of people that he used to hang out frequently in the past, and he lost his friend' into the crowd that had taken over the manor. Turning to them, he greeted them with not much of enthusiasm, but instead it was something cold, remaining in the lines of politeness. His former companions were surprised by his actions, but Zeke didn't give a damn, really. Waving at them, he turned to walk away and noticed Rin right in front of him. Giving a simple nod, he finally spoke. His voice was lower than during the high school, it had rather cool and sexy, charming tone to it: "By the look on your face, I can assume that you really didn't think through while planning all this, did you?" Standing beside her, he looked over the people around them.

There was still a question lingering on Harry's mind, even as Shailene spoke. He'd gathered that her and Matthew weren't together when he died, and they hadn't been for a while before that. Harry couldn't say he was surprised. He'd been one of the few people to see the tension underneath the surface, to see that it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. But he still wanted to ask. What happened? He'd heard the rumours, how much had she known? And was she okay? She sure as hell seemed it, but she'd seemed happy all the way back then too.

The change of topic as they moved on to the infamous Rin Davenport party was appreciated. He rolled his eyes. "Oh my god, I know. People looked at me like I was insane when I said I wasn't going in our sophomore year. Nobody said no to one of those golden invitations. And then you brought me along anyway," he said. He'd gotten away with it by downplaying what kind of party it really was and by saying he was going with Matthew. Shailene had actually told most of them, his parents had just believed him. He'd lived on his nerves all evening, but had still managed to enjoy himself somehow. He still hadn't seen anything quite like it since. She knew how to throw a party, and a classy party as well.

As they approached the house, Harry pointed out a parking spot for Shay, his heart starting to pound at the thought of the party, partially due to anxiety, but also to excitement. He wanted people to see who he had become, to see how he had grown. But would they like him? Would they even care? Would they remember him? That one part of his brain that wanted to seek out comfort told him go back, retreat to safety, hide where it was comfortable. But the bold, angry part of his brain was what made him climb out of the car and hold out his arm for Shay to take. "Shall we?" he said with a grin.

Things weren't going well, and beneath the surface, that was driving her crazy. Everybody seemed to be holding their breath, waiting for something to happen, watching each other, watching her. Honestly, all they needed was a thunderstorm, an overdramatic detective, and a dead-

She caught herself mid thought, realising that it... well, wasn't exactly in good taste. Especially after it had been revealed that Matthew had been murdered. She had questioned the wisdom of her decision, throwing this party. It had seemed like a great idea at the time, a chance to let everybody let off steam. But as she poured herself another glass of champagne, it seemed like nobody actually wanted to let off steam, they just wanted to... sit and stare at each other, by the looks of things.

The voice seemed to come from nowhere, and she spun around to see who it was. She wasn't sure who she was expecting to see, but it sure as hell wasn't Zeke Moore. As far as Rin had been concerned, he'd just disappeared off the map altogether. So promising, and then just... nothing. She would have been lying if she said she wasn't curious to see what had happened to him. And now, here he was, standing in front of her.

"Seems I forgot we're not in high school any more and people have coping strategies that aren't just getting drunk," She remarked wryly. "Or else we're all just so damn suspicious of each other after all that shit that came out about Matthew," she added, rolling her eyes. Then she sighed, glancing around and leaning against the bookcase beside her. "So. How are you? Where've you been? You dropped off everyone's radar without warning," she remarked with a teasing grin.

Sutton just did what she was always best at, just standing there with a drink in her hand. The home slowly began to get more and more crowded, this began to make her feel a bit nervous about the situation she just found herself in. Any time she was in a crowd this big, her mania always seemed to take control and there was nothing she was ever able to do about it.

A few people who picked on her back in school approached her and it just seemed like nothing ever changed. They began calling her names, pushing her into the wall she was standing by, and for a couple minutes they just weren't able to let up. Sutton hoped that Jax would be there soon. This was the last thing she needed. After all these years of changing herself and regaining control of her mania, she was slowly starting to lose all control.

Finally she heard her phone go off, which pulled her back into the present. She pushed herself through the crowd and away from the guys who were messing with her and went straight for the bathroom. Sutton closed the door and locked it behind her before pulling her phone out and setting her wine glass down on the bathroom sink counter. A flush of relief went through her when she noticed Jax had finally arrived.

To: Jax
"I'm in the bathroom. Please hurry I think I'm going to lose it!"

Sutton sent the message and immediately finished off the glass of wine before leaning against the counter, feeling her body beginning to slowly tremble. This was the beginning of it all. Jax was always the only one who was ever able to calm her down. If he wasn't able to help her this time, she had no idea how she was going to be able to make it through the rest of the night. She felt that she had pulled herself out of her old ways, but returning to Oakhedge seemed to just pull her back into her past. Sutton never believed this was going to be how her first night back would turn out. She hoped beyond hope that there would be a better alternative than what she was thinking.

Jackson clearly remembered Zeke's promise from just a few days ago about staying sober, but he knew for a fact that it would be hard for the male to keep that promise in that state he was in. For that reason alone, Jackson decided he wouldn't be holding it against him. He'd made a joke about taking his car and driving him home should he get absolutely shitfaced, knowing full well that Zeke most likely would not like the idea of Jax driving his very expensive vehicle. Even if Jax was a much better driver than he.

The two moved further into the party as Jax studied his surroundings. Somehow, this was not what he'd imagined a Davenport party to be like. Granted, everyone present was much older now and matured. Well, the latter was debatable. Still, everyone was much less drunk than expected. The male couldn't decide if this was a good thing or not. On one hand, relatively sober partygoers meant fewer chances of random fights breaking out or of Jackson accidentally walking in on more than one hook-up. On the other hand, sober ex-classmates meant he'd be more easily recognized and a big part of him didn't feel prepared for that to happen. That's not to mention the undeniable tension that had now taken over the entire estate. Everyone was on edge, just waiting for something terrible to happen and Jackson wanted no part of it.

He twirled on his heels to face Zeke, some statement about wanting to leave the party early on the tip of his tongue, but the guy was nowhere to be seen. He'd been lost in the crowd, and Jackson in all his thoughts hadn't even noticed. He sighed, running a hand through his unstyled hair, and headed towards the bar area while avidly avoiding everyone and anyone that he remotely recognized. It'd be a couple martinis in that he'd be able to properly face them. So he picked up a glass, reminding himself that between he and Zeke, he'd have to be the sober one at the end of the night, and distanced himself from the bar.

His next mission had been to find Sutton. He'd been prepared to start asking around until she was located. Luckily, that wasn't necessary. The device in his back pocket buzzed a couple of times before Jackson could pull it out and read his friend's name on the lock screen. He quickly read through the message first but gave it a slower second read to make sure he had understood correctly. Shoving the device back into its holding place, he ventured towards the back halls. Having never been in this house, he had to check several doors before finding the actual bathroom, or what he thought was the bathroom due to the fact that it was closed.

"Soo?" he knocked once and then knocked again on the chance that the first knock had been too low. "Sutton, you in there?" He pulled out his phone, readying to call her on the likely chance he'd gotten the wrong door and it wasn't her that was hiding behind it.

Sutton stood there, leaning against the bathroom counter for what felt like an eternity trying to steady her breathing and keep from going 'Manic Sutton', which everyone seemed to call her back in the day. She slowly began to breath in through her nose and out her mouth, but no matter how many times she did that, she was having a much harder time trying to calm herself than she thought.

Suddenly she heard a knock on the bathroom door, hoping it was Jax, she reached for the doorknob and opened it. When she spotted the guy she had been waiting to see, she was overwhelmed with happiness but she wasn't necessarily able to show it because her mania was beginning to get too strong to show any other sort of emotions. "Thank God!" she stated as she reached for his hand and pulled him inside before closing the door behind them. "I'm going to go insane! I don't know what to do!" she started, as if a waterfall of words was flowing out of her mouth.

Sutton's heart was beginning to race faster with each passing second. She had to let some of her anger out, but she had to do it the way a normal person would. Sutton didn't want to return to the person she used to be last time she was in Oakhedge. The only reason she even decided to come to this party was to show everyone the new person she had become, to show them she finally learned to control herself. And maybe, just maybe, she would've been able to rekindle a few friendships along the way. But in the given state of things right now, she absolutely doubted that would ever be able to happen.

The small blonde began pacing back and forth across the bathroom floor, her body beginning to tremble with each step. "These guys who used to mess with me back in school cornered me and started treating me the way they did back in school. I feel like everything is about to return to the way things were before I left. I just....I can't do this again!" she continued, as if she were speaking without allowing herself any time to breathe in between. Tears began to flow down her face. If Jax wasn't going to be able to help calm her down this time, like he had been able to do in the past. She had no idea if anyone would be able to. She definitely knew she wasn't going to be able to do this on her own.

He wasn't sure he was up to the bar to even be there, after all Zeke kind of ditched most of them and Jackson had been probably the only link to the rest of their former classmates and schoolmates. Jackson was truly the only person he actually gave damn about at that point, the only person to see through certain moods and acting patterns of this boy who once had big future ahead of himself.

Zeke had been thinking of indulging himself into the alcohol that was present, sure he could go into his most secret stash, hidden away at Andy's, but promise was a promise and thus, he wasn't going to get on that path again. Of course, there were many temptations in this house, presented for him on this golden plate, but Zeke was going to take the opposite course, unlike what people had been expecting of him. At this point, his pretense self had become a game of sorts, and the main player to trick had become himself.

The young Moore just ignored her remark about Matthew, he knew better not to touch the subject. There were a lot of rumors circling around and Zeke himself just happened to maybe know if some of those were true, but submitting into those he would danger his own secrets to be spilled. He wasn't going to risk on that. "I guess I was trying to find out who I am," he replied to her, grinning and flashing those healthy row of teeth. Zeke had been ready to be bombarded by all sorts of questions, some as directly as Rin in front of him. "Let's be honest. People here don't give a darn thing what one does. All they are trying to dig up is some hidden skeletons." Zeke looked around them, then turned at Rin and asked a question in return: "How about you? Are you one of the diggers or hiders?"

His addictions, his trauma, his preference to gender, his everything - it had to be kept a secret. Frankly, Zeke had even prepared himself in case someone asked anything about his and Jax' relationship. After all they were rather.... unpredictable pair of friends.

"Well, you know what they say," Shailene sang merrily, "misery loves company." It hadn't been the most miserable situation to have been in; for Shailene to be as "skinny" as her grandmother accused her of having been in high school, Shailene had scarfed down a number of hors d'oeuvres during the event in question, an attempt to keep her brain-to-mouth-filter from acting up. Contrary to Harry's own belief that she "dragged him there anyway," Shay called the night a success in that Harry even showed up and she'd only had one mishap with Matthew, and that was because she'd spent the majority of the night under another boy's (Harry) arm. Shailene had figured the bruising of her wrists a win in comparison to the could-have-beens.

Shay followed his parking directions, recognizing who should or would be present based on the cars she remembered them driving in high school or at least their parents' vehicles. As much as a lot of her former classmates liked boasting about their wealth and all that jazz back in the day, an older Shay was more inclined to see them for what they are and not the envy-inspiring brats who made her roll her eyes behind mangas she covered with textbooks, and about whom she gagged behind their heads as they turned to get lauded for what they considered humor, i.e. picking on a classmate they considered lesser than them. It was those thoughts that made her smile now, a little giddy at the prospect of being among such a group again. Before, when she had graduated, Shailene had yearned to escape. She wanted to leave behind the pitying stares because Matthew cheated on her, leave the ghosts of his abuse in the dark corners, leave behind herself - and now she was back, and still a bit of herself. Still a touch of that girl from before, but better now - stronger. And it was that desire for them to see it, when she had once wanted to hide away and never return, that had her returning Harry's grin with an exuberant, "We shall!"

Taking his arm, Shailene closed her door and locked the vehicle, dropping her keys into her clutch as they walked towards the house. "Ooooh, remember that one time everyone talked about Donovan cuz he barfed all over the Davenport's mustang junior year. I'm pretty sure everyone was ready to shit their pants every day of that week that she was pissed with him," Shailene recalled, noting the lack of said classic car. She never did find out what happened to it then, opting not to bring it up whenever she had been in Rin's presence for fear of...honestly, Shailene didn't know what the hell she had really feared about Rin Davenport when they were younger. If it had been fear at all. She just knew that Rin had inspired this feeling of...of inferiority, and perhaps that was why Shailene both admired and cowered before the girl. She had never been able to tell if Rin liked her much, as she herself never had any real issues with the other girl, but amidst it all, Shailene had respected her. Wished she could stand as tall and as strong as Rin appeared, especially when she couldn't. She didn't think she feared the girl - err, woman - now, but perhaps the fates decided to test that theory because amidst all the familiar faces Shailene spotted upon entering the house with Harry, the one she recognized by name was Rin. "Oh shit, it's Rin," she hissed under her breath to Harry, tugging him closer imperceptibly. "I feel like I'm ten again and waiting for her to go off because Sammy Chastain scuffed her Salvatore Ferragamos."

A middle school Shailene would have scurried off behind a corner somewhere until Rin passed her by; high school Shay would have smiled too hard and ducked behind Matthew, even if it was the least safest place in the world. Adult Shailene felt the residual panic knot in her belly, even as she took those careful strides into Rin...and Zeke's spaces. And if she happened to be dragging - and yes, Harry could actually accuse her of dragging him this time - Harry along, then so be it. Misery really does love company...and what kind of guests didn't greet their hostess? "Rin!" Shailene exclaimed and was surprised her damn self when her smile was genuine, not frozen. As she reached the duo, Shailene released Harry and embraced Rin in a side-hug she immediately winced over, pulling back to ramble, "Oh crap - I'm sorry, I shouldn't have hugged you - not that I'm sorry about hugging you because I'm a hugger now, but I'm all about consent and I didn't get that from you, which is my fault and shit - I'm doing the thing....Zeke!" Wincing again, this time because of the flurry of words that had escaped her mouth, Shailene stamped down on the age-old reflex to shrink away by turning her smile to Zeke, whom she also extended a quick hug to on a reflex that insisted that she not not embrace him too. "It's been a minute, how are you guys? You remember Harry, right?"

It felt like Zeke was avoiding the question a little, something that frustrated Rin at the back of her mind. Then again, it had been years since they'd spoken. He couldn't be sure she was the same person, in the same way she knew he couldn't possibly be the same person. Maybe opening up their hearts to people that could very well be perfect strangers now wasn't the best idea. At his question, Rin just raised an eyebrow and smirked, shrugging a little. "Who says I can't be both?" She asked. Two could play at the game of mystery. She had enough skeletons to hide; between what her family did for a living and why she'd been whisked away so suddenly. She'd never fit in at the Swiss school- a little too rough around the edges, a little too many shadows behind the eyes. But she'd fooled everybody, and that was all they wanted to see.

She was momentarily distracted by the entrance of a pair of newcomers. Her eyes instinctively narrowed and her smile dropped a little as she didn't recognise them. Party crashers would not be well received. Unknown to most, she had security hidden around the grounds and the house, ready to intervene at a moment's notice. Only the truly brave or the truly idiotic would try and gatecrash a Davenport party. And then, as Shailene called her name, Rin realised exactly who they were, and her smile returned, surprisingly genuine. She was surprised when Shailene hugged her, but not in a bad way. The other girl had always been somewhat meek, hiding behind Matthew and constantly afraid of stepping a toe out of line. Rin saw a glimpse of that as Shailene gushed an apology for the hug, but there was no way in hell this was the Shailene that Rin had known in school. It was only as Shailene introduced him that Rin even recognised Harry Stone.

"It's great to see you, Shailene, Harry. I hardly even recognised the two of you at first! And don't worry about the hugging, I would have given my consent anyway," she said, raising an eyebrow a little teasingly. "I've been... good. Busy. But I'm sure nobody here wants to hear about the ins and outs of the fashion industry, how are you doing? Shailene, I was... so sorry to hear about Matthew, about... everything." She didn't want to gush or be invasive. She'd heard the stories about the cheating, just like everybody else. She didn't know about how it ended and frankly she didn't want to know, but she didn't want to waltz around the elephant in the room either.

There was something about approaching the Davenport house that still gave Harry the chills. He could remember the exact incident that Shailene described. There had been a tangible tension among their class the whole week as they watched Rin with baited breath. Rumours flew about what her family had done to Donovan as a punishment. Apparently "send him the bill" hadn't been quite dramatic enough. Perhaps understandably so, however, as Rin herself had seemed notably on edge. Well, as on edge as the resident ice queen ever seemed. But the invitations had still gone out to the next party. Donovan, however, had been denied one, a grudge that Rin had never dropped. He wondered if he'd even been invited to this one.

Harry hadn't even noticed Rin until Shailene whispered about feeling ten again. Rin had hardly changed. As always, she seemed a tad overdressed, and as always, she pulled it off flawlessly. She was talking to Zeke, who had... changed a lot. Just as much as Harry, it seemed. Harry would have preferred to at least have a drink in his hand before talking to either of them, but instead, Shailene was dragging him over to them. He fixed a smile on his face as they reached them and Shailene embraced Rin. Even as Rin shrugged it off, Harry decided against trying the same thing, instead just nodding at both her and Zeke as Shailene mentioned him. Rin was as gracious as always, it seemed.

The comment about Matthew put Harry a little on edge. Him and Rin had been friends as far as he knew, and he wasn't entirely sure what to expect next. He knew for sure he didn't want to deal with that drama without some alcohol. He cleared his throat. "It's great to see you too, Rin, looking beautiful as always. I'm going to get a drink, can I get anyone anything?" He asked, noting Rin still had a glass mostly full of champagne in her hand.
