THE PATRIOTS
Image

Patriots (also known as Rebels, Revolutionaries, Congress-Men or American Whigs) were those colonists of the British Thirteen United Colonies that violently rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent nation. Their rebellion was based on the political philosophy of republicanism, as expressed by pamphleteers, such as Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Paine. As a group, Patriots represented a wide array of social, economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. They included lawyers like John Adams and Alexander Hamilton; planters like Thomas Jefferson and George Mason; merchants like Alexander McDougall and ordinary farmers like Daniel Shays and Joseph Plumb Martin.

CONTINENTAL ARMYThe Continental Army was formed after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War by the colonies that became the United States of America. Established by a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, it was created to coordinate the military efforts of the Thirteen Colonies in their revolt against the rule of Great Britain. The Continental Army was supplemented by local militias and other troops that remained under control of the individual states. General George Washington was the commander-in-chief of the army throughout the war. Most of the Continental Army was disbanded in 1783 after the Treaty of Paris ended the war. The 1st and 2nd Regiments went on to form the nucleus of the Legion of the United States in 1792 under General Anthony Wayne. This became the foundation of the United States Army in 1796.

ImageTHE REDCOATS
Image

The Red Coat has evolved from being the British infantryman's ordinary uniform to a garment retained only for ceremonial purposes. Its official adoption dates from February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance. The new English Army was formed of 22,000 men, divided into 12 foot regiments of 600 men each, one dragoon regiment of 1000 men, and the artillery, consisting of 900 guns. The infantry regiments wore coats of Venetian red with white facings. A contemporary comment on the New Model Army dated 7 May 1645 stated "the men are Redcoats all, the whole army only are distinguished by the several facings of their coats".

LOYALISTSLoyalists were American colonists who remained loyal to the Kingdom of Great Britain (and the British monarchy) during the American Revolutionary War. At the time they were often called Tories, Royalists, or King's Men. They were opposed by the Patriots, those who supported the revolution. When their cause was defeated, about 20% of the Loyalists fled to other parts of the British Empire, in Britain or elsewhere in British North America. The southern colonists moved mostly to Florida, which had remained loyal to the Crown, and to British Caribbean possessions, while northern colonists largely migrated to Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, where they were called United Empire Loyalists. Most were compensated with Canadian land or British cash distributed through formal claims procedures.

THE CULPER RING
Image

The Culper Ring was a spy ring organized by Major Benjamin Tallmadge under the orders of General George Washington in the summer of 1778 during British occupation of New York City at the height of the American Revolutionary War. Their name was derived from the aliases taken by two of its main members, Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend, who were known as "Samuel Culper, Sr." and "Samuel Culper, Jr." respectively. After the battle of Monmouth in late June 1778, British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton retreated to Sandy Hook, New Jersey. From there, they took a ship for New York City, which they had already occupied for almost two years (since General Washington's defeat at the Battle of Fort Washington in September 1776). General Washington was well aware of the need for good intelligence, and he asked one of his officers, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, to recruit people who could be trusted to collect it in New York City.Secrecy was so strict that Washington did not know the identity of all the operatives. The general public was not aware of the Ring's existence until the 1930s. "Culper Junior’s" identity was discovered in 1939, with the discovery of a trunk of old letters in the Townsend family home. Historian Morton Pennypacker noticed the resemblance of the handwriting in these letters and letters written by Robert Townsend in George Washington's collection. Among the techniques they used to relay messages were coded messages published in newspapers and developing a method of using invisible ink, called a sympathetic stain, to write between the lines of what appeared to be a typical letter. Women were also an integral part of the Culper Ring. At that time, women were expected to share their husbands' beliefs and not be directly and openly involved in politics, which meant that they were less likely to be suspected of being spies.

PURPOSEThe Ring's task was to send messages to General George Washington about the activities of the British in New York. They operated mostly in New York, Long Island and Connecticut. The Ring conducted covert operations until after the end of the American Revolutionary War, but its heyday was between 1778 and 1781.

The American Revolution was causing many problems in the Colonies. British soldiers and patriot rebels were tearing the new world apart. Major Benjamin Tallmadge had come up with an idea that could help the patriots win the war against the King's soldiers. He had consulted his childhood friend, Abraham Woodhull and asked him to gather intel for the Patriots. At first he denied the offer, but Ben convinced him.

One day, Benjamin was asked by Washington to join him at a meeting at the Ambers home. Washington was a high target for the British. Tallmadge agreed to escort Washington the event. He knew that was a chance that they could be ambushed, so he carried his weapons with him. Washington and Ben arrived at the Ambers home and Ben knocked on the wooden door. They awaited for an answer, it would've been rude to just enter without being invited inside.

Marie hadn't slept well thanks to her father's late-night mention of them having important visitors tomorrow. She spent most of the night trying to figure out who exactly was visiting them, and why her father seemed so rattled.

It was now early morning, and as Marie sat to adjust her wool stockings she'd notice the open letter her father brought out for the first time last night sitting on a nearby table. He had apparently received the letter weeks ago informing him of this meeting, but he had only shared this news with Marie last night, and as curious as she was to find out who exactly was visiting them Marie never asked to read the letter for herself and she surely wasn't going to take it from the table without permission. Instead she'd simply stare at the folded dingy paper for several seconds before standing and making her way over towards the front door.

"I'm ready fath-" Marie stopped herself short as she slipped into her hand-woven shoes and leaned back against her father's chair. She had gotten used to referring to her father as Mr. Adams and herself only as "Marie" - purposely leaving off her surname unless asked, in which case she'd respond with her middle name - Anastasia.
"What did you say dear, I'm afraid I couldn't hear you clearly back there." her father inquired as he rounded a corner and made his way down the hallway. "I said that I'm ready to leave."
The two smiled warmly at each other for a moment before her father opened the door and the two would step outside.

From the moment the door opened the rapport between the two of them shifted, James wasn't her father anymore - he was a widower with no children, and she was the family maid him and his wife had raised from birth. There were rumors amongst the townspeople that the two were having an affair, which sickened both of them, but more important than either one of their sensibilities was keeping up the charade of Man and Maid, and so far they had done this perfectly.

The walk to the small Northern town market took about twenty minutes, and after spending half an hour or so there the duo made their way back home - with fresh fish, among other things.
They, like many others, had a smokehouse with reserves of smoked and salted meat and seafood, however James wanted something more fresh for their guest and Marie didn't question her father.

"They should be arriving around dusk so you have plenty of time to get things ready. Harvey Williams from next door invited me to go fox hunting, I think he's trying to push his widowed daughter on me again and she's a nice enough woman, but he just doesn't seem to understand I have no interest. But still, it would be rude to say no so will you be alright alone for a few hours?"
Marie smiled and nodded her head "Of course, I will be fine as always. I'll put things up and make sure everything is ready for our guest"
James responded with a warm smile and slight nod of the head, and after slipping into a pair of hardier boots he'd make his way over towards the neighbors.

Almost instantly Marie would untie and remove the apron that was tied around her dark brown petticoat and thin orange-tan jacket and flounce down on the couch.
Marie would only get a few minutes of rest before a knock on the door caused her to jolt to her feet and fumble for her apron.
"Be right there!" she called out as she began to tie her apron back on. Once it was in place she'd make sure her hair was still tied up properly before opening the door.
To her surprise it was the daughters of Mr. Williams explaining that their father sent them over to help with chores while him and James went hunting.
In all honesty she wasn't comfortable around strangers but Marie put on a smile and welcomed them in anyways.

The two would prove to be quite the help, and over the next few hours they helped feed the animals outside, clean, turn salted meat and raw vegetables into a soup, and place the recently purchased fish over a fire.

By the time the two men returned the house was filled with the scent of cooking food, causing Mr. Williams to make several not-so-subtle hints about wanting an invitation to dinner. However James never took the bait and after a few minutes of chit-chat and goodbyes the Williams trio would leave.
"That man is persistently dull" said James a few seconds after the door was locked. Marie laughed as she loosened her apron some. "I'd ask how your hunting trip went but I think I can tell from that last statement."
The two would joke about Mr. Williams for a bit before Marie showed her father the food she had cooking for their guest.
"Very good, it smells wonderful, and it reminds me - did you look on your bed?"
"My bed?"
"Yes, I put something out for you - go look."
Curious Marie would quickly turn around and make her way down the hall and into her room. She'd only take a few steps through the doorway though before stopping in her tracks.
"That's...."
"Your mothers. It was one of her favorites."
Laid out on the bed in front of her was a pink and white muslin dress that used to belong to her mother. She knew her father had kept many things that belonged to her mom but she never asked to see them and he never bothered to bring them out - until now.
"Since we've moved and began this charade you've had to dress as a common maid, for our guest tonight I want you to look nice Marie, so please get dressed in this, our guest will be her in an hour or two."
Marie was hit with emotions ranging from sadness to joy, being reminded of her mother and all they've been through was heavy on her heart, but being offered such a gift by her father made her feel loved.
She'd unexpectedly hug her father tight for a few moments before he excused himself out into the living room.

----

It was 7pm and nearly dark out when a knock came. Her father usually let her answer the door but this time he insisted on being the one to answer it, and instructed her to go and get some tea ready.

James opened the door and welcomed who he recognized to be General Washington into his house, along with his guard.
"Please, come in."
After shutting the door behind the two men James would invite them to sit on the couch. He noticed they weren't heavily disguised and that worried him, but he pushed the worry aside and took a seat in his chair across from the two patriots.

Marie was nervous as she pulled out four simplistic cups and then began to pour some tea inside an old teapot. She wasn't sure how many people had just arrived but she hoped four cups were enough as she placed them on a tray. Before she picked up the tray Marie took a few seconds to try and calm her nerves, the last thing she wanted was to spill something on her mothers dress and in front of their guest.
Once ready Marie put the teapot on the tray, picked it up, and rested it against her body a few inches below her bust. Her hair was mostly pinned back but as she walked out of the kitchen and down the hall she'd feel a long strand fall loose and rest against her cheek. Instinct made her want to fix it instanty but instead she chose to ignore it and keep heading towards the living room.

As soon as she entered the main living space she'd spot two men, one older and the other younger - around her age. She didn't want to stare at either of them for long though and quickly made her way towards the coffee table in front of them where she'd set the tray down and fill up two cups with warm tea.
"My daughter made tea, please have some. We can eat afterwards"
The statement caught her completely off guard and she instantly turned her head and stared over at her father - confusion and fear written all over her face. James had just referred to her as his daughter in front of strangers for the first time in months.
"Don't worry, it's safe."

Marie didn't speak but nodded ever so slightly in her father's direction before placing the now half-empty teapot on the tray again and stepping back. It wasn't her place to sit in on a conversation between men, so she'd walk into the dining room and begin to set the table - acting oblivious, but keeping her ears wide open as she occasionally stole a glance at the two men.

It was towards the middle of the fall, a cool breeze was blowing through the air. Tallmadge tried not to shiver, but he could not help it. He wasn't quite used to the cold weather yet. Washington had more warmth then he did which his cloth. When a older man answered the door, Washington nodded at him. "Ah, James. Thank you for allowing us to have the meeting here. How kind of you. This is one of my men, Major Tallmadge. I hope you do not mind that I brought him." Washington removed his cloth and handed it to Tallmadge. Ben looked around until James pointed to where to place it down. Ben followed the both of them to a room and stood up. Washington sat down on the couch. He wanted to be prepared for any unexpected events.

When James mentioned his daughter, he looked at the young woman standing next to him. She had brought tea out for them to drink. Ben smiled slightly but quickly looked back at James. He still understand why they were there, he wasn't fully informed about the meeting. Only that he was invited for insurance and an escort. They all sat in silence for a few moments. "This is a beautiful home, Mr.Adams." Ben finally said to break the silence. Washington looked at him then back at James. "Shall we? or shall we wait for the others?" Washington asked James.

As her father said welcoming pleasantries to their guest Marie quickly understood who exactly was sitting in her house, and she'd notice her hands beginning to shake as she placed several plates down on the table.
After setting the plates around the table Marie walked past the living room and into the Kitchen. To avoid getting anything on her mother's dress she'd put her apron on before filling up a large bowl with some soup and then bringing it into the dining room, where she'd spot her father standing by a bookcase.

----

James nodded slightly at Major Tallmadge to acknowledge his presence before looking back at General Washington.
"Shall we? or shall we wait for the others?" asked the General, and James would stand up and walk over towards his personal bookcase before responding.
"We'll go ahead and begin and bring them up on what we've discussed when and if they arrive. For now though..." James would pull a large worn bag styled like a reticule from behind a row of books on the second from the top shelf. "This was my wifes. he began as he made his way back to his seat. "She made it this large so that she could carry letters and various objects back home from the British Taverns. She had two, but the other one was on her when they shot her in the back, and the stolen things inside it were used as justification for the cowardly act of murder. We had a neighbor at the time, a fellow Patriot residing in the city, who gave me and Marie enough warning to run. We didn't have much time to pack but I made sure to grab this for it has information inside that's absolutely invaluable."

Marie was entranced as her father spoke, it had been a while since she heard the story of her mother's death and laid eyes on the bag her father was now holding.
She'd put the bowl of soup down and turn away from the living room after feeling her eyes well up with tears, and she'd promptly wipe her eyes clean before heading back into the Kitchen.

As she dropped some spoons into a bucket of water to clean them Marie would catch something past by the Kitchen window out the corner of her eye. Surprised she'd stop what she was doing and stand up to walk towards the Window, but before she could a flurry of rocks would come smashing through the window - one hitting her on the forehead, causing her to scream and run from the Kitchen.
James instantly leapt to his feet and let the bag on his lap fall to the floor as he ran to his daughter, meeting her halfway down the hallway.
"Someone threw rocks into the window father, what's happening?" she asked frantically as her father noticed a small stream of blood dripping down the side of her face. James would pull out a piece of cloth and stop the blood flow before it hit Marie's attire, and before he could utter anything rocks began smashing through all the windows on the first floor that faced towards the front of the property, and after one hit a candle atop a table by the front door the wooden floor would light up in flames.

"Back here!" James yelled at General Washington and Major Tallmadge before he pulled Marie into his bedroom, pulled a bookcase to the ground revealing the secret back-door he put in place shortly after they moved into the house, and then began furiously throwing things into a large handmade bag ofhis. Marie was frozen in place as the ruckus in front of their house grew louder and the fire began to spread, but suddenly she'd remember her mother's bag. "The bag father, mother's bag - where is it!?" she asked, and after her father cursed under his breath she'd realize he must have left it in the living room and instinctively pushed past everyone to go for her mother's bag. However James quickly caught up to his daughter and insisted she let him get the bag instead. Reluctantly Marie listened and stood outside her father's bedroom door as he ran past a wall of fire and into the living room.
He was out of her sight for what felt like an eternity, but after only several second she'd spot her father making his way back towards her.
Before James made it to the hallway the front door was kicked opened and in walked a group of Loyalist and Red-Coats. James instantly dropped the bag and began to tussle with the first man who approached him until he knocked the guy out, but after spotting just how many where behind the initial intruder James would throw his hands up into the air and beg them not to shoot, but not before kicking his wife's bag down the hallway. Marie quickly picked it up and then tried to run to her father but a large piece of debris from the ceiling fell down in front of her blocking her path. She wasn't giving up however, and began lookinh around for something, anything, to move the fallen debris from out of her way. She already lost her mother, there was no way she was going to run out that back door without her father!

Washington nodded and took the book in his hand to scan it. Benjamin thought he heard something outside but he shook it off and listened to the conversation. Since he was the head of intelligence, he needed to hear what was being said. "My regards for the lost of your wife for the sake for this intel." Washington added. He looked around then back at Washington. "We should get this intel to Mister Sackett as soon as possible." He nodded. "Agreed, but it must wait until we return. Now you said something about knowing some people who could help us."

Tallmadge jumped to his feet when he heard the glass shatter, placing his hand on his sword walking towards the kitchen. His eyes widened when he saw the young woman come up with blood running her forehead. "Sir, we need to get all of you out of here. It's an ambush. They know we're here." They followed the older man through the hidden path. The man headed back for the intel that was extremely important for the war. His daughter began to follow him back, the red coats began to get the house on fire. Tallmadge made sure that Washington was safe and headed back. Quickly he grabbed the girl, even though she tried to fight back, "I'll go back for him, we need to get you out of here." He pushed forward and managed to get her to safety. Benjamin turned around to go back but debris from the fire blocked all his paths back inside. He took a deep breath and stood where he stopped. He managed to see the father running from the red coats. The father threw the bag in his direction, quickly he moved up to grasp it. He placed it down next to the girl and headed for the red coats. As he pushed forward, a bullet flew through his side but he got back up and continued to pushed forward. By the time he got there, the red coats were gone and so was the older man. He looked down grasping his side to stop the bleeding, he sighed and closed her eyes. Benjamin approached the daughter. "I'm so sorry, I tried to get him. But I couldn't reach him in time, my regards." Tallmadge located Washington and felt slightly relieved knowing he was safe and alright.
