Introduction

The city of Greenreed is pretty ordinary overall. It's got its problems, but what big city doesn't? And when trouble arises, the city's capable protectors are always ready to intervene.
Years ago, the famous superhero duo Bullfrog and Iron Henry kept these city streets safe along with their young sidekick, Tadpole. Now little Tadpole is all grown up and taking up the mantle as Polliwog. This would be just fine, but watching over the entire city is a lot of work for one woman, and it makes it quite difficult to keep up any kind social life.
And of course, the life of a superheroine isn't the only demanding lifestyle. Elsewhere, a young lady of high social status deals with her own complicated life, as well as all of those scandalous rumors the press keeps spreading about her and Polliwog.

The day started pretty normally. Molly got out of bed- without really remembering how she got there or when she fell asleep, still dressed in yesterday's clothes- got dressed, and went into the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast before going to work. Her "real job" was great and all, but running around the city in a costume helping strangers didn't really pay the bills, so she spent her days working part-time at the cafe near her apartment.
"G'morning." she yawned, entering the kitchen. "When did you get here, pop?"
At the table, a silver-haired man helped himself to Molly's coffee. He picked up a folded newspaper. "Last night. I let myself in. Didn't think you'd mind since you were already asleep at the table." He flipped to a page of the paper. "Long night?"
The newspaper was opened to an article about a certain masked hero's activity around the city.
"I'm not happy about this." he said.
"I hear ya'. Why do they even print newspapers anymore?"
He frowned. "Molly, I thought I told you, after what happened to your father-"
"Okay!" she interrupted, snatching up the paper and a bagel. "Gotta go to work."
"We will talk about this later."
The door shut behind her with a little more force than necessary. "Yeah, sure." she muttered to herself on her way out. She paused to crumple up the paper but was stopped by an article about some sort of party being held that night, to celebrate the commemoration of some new building. It looked like a lot of important people would be there, which might make it a target for more villainous activity. Probably worth checking out, she thought. And what Papa Henry didn't know wouldn't hurt him.

Samantha woke up from her slumber early this morning. She looked at the room she woke up in and realized that it was her own. She was use to waking up on the streets, in someone else's home or in jail. She slipped from underneath the covers and left her room, letting the door close itself. She walked down the stairs and into the kitchen, only to find her brother sitting there, watching the news. "Hey there, Sleeping Beauty." He spoke without turning around to face her. She rolled her eyes and went to the fridge. "And how did you sleep?" She asked him. He nodded his head and gave a thumbs up.

"Man, can you believe that a hero is among us?" Her brother asked. "Well, good thing that it is not a villain or worse, zombies." She said dramatically while pouring herself a glass of orange juice then sitting the carton back in the fridge. She sat down at the table and stared at the television as well, overhearing something about a big opening downtown. "You going to that celebration, Sammie?" She turned towards her brother with a nod then shrugged her shoulders. "I might go. What about you?" She responded. "Nope. I got a date tonight." He spoke excitedly. "Oh, so you want me out of the house. I see how it is." They both laughed as she simply shook her head and got up from the table, going upstairs.

There, she showered and put on a change of clothes. She went back downstairs and kissed her brother on the cheek. "See ya' soon." She said while exiting the door. She placed on her brown leather coat, over her white t-shirt. Her blue jeans were hugged tightly to her hips and more, placed upon her feet were a pair of brown leather boots.

She was off to the event going on that night though first, she would stop for a quick bite at one of the local cafes.

Molly worked diligently, distracting herself with counters to be cleaned and drinks to be made so that she wouldn't think too much about her pop's concern and her blatant disobedience. Thinking things about her other life made her expression harden and gain a sharpness that only fit on her alter-ego's face. As far as she was concerned, Molly Hoppington and Polliwog were two different people. That was the way it had to be.

When business was slow, she entertained herself by people-watching from behind the counter. She privately wondered and guessed about the lives of customers, trying to pick out their personalities and private stories by the clothes they'd wear or the tip they'd leave. That day, a young woman in leather and denim caught her eye. Her face seemed familiar, though Molly couldn't imagine why, attractive. Yes, definitely her type if she had thought for a second that she could balance something like a relationship along with everything else. And anyway flirting on the job would probably be frowned upon.

She fussed with her hair, little of it as there was, reflexively. "Hi, what can I get for you today?"

Samantha pushed herself through the doors of the cafe and seen a short haired female standing behind the counter. She mentally licked her lips but she probably wasn't into girls. She shook her head then saw the women's action and her whole perspective of the female changed. She was very attractive and kind of cute. The way she fixed her hair was a little funny then she spoke. Her voice almost made her melt but she handled her own.

When the question arose from the female, she smiled brightly. "Hello, uhmm, I don't know." She said while leaning against the counter and biting her lip. "What would you recommend?" She asked the female while locking her eyes with hers. She knew what she wanted already but she wanted to feel this female out before just up and flirting with her. Good thing that wasn't a line so she was going to keep this up for however long she wanted to.

Samantha continued to look at the female, studying her body with her eyes. She knew that she was this female's type. Hell, she was everybody's type. "Oh! Are any of you guys going to the little function that they are having tonight?" She asked a little loud while placing a sad look upon her face. "I've been in this town for almost three years now and don't know where it is." Another lie because she hoped that the female was going. But could Samantha be in a relationship? Yes. A faithful, commited one? With the right person, yes.

Molly casually rattled off a list of specials. She briefly indulged the idea of saying something smooth, maybe mentioning that she'd be attending that same event, but then, it was Polliwog who'd be attending, not her. A function like that was reserved for the city's Important People. Maybe that was why this woman looked familiar, if she was enough of a big-shot to attend.

Nevertheless, she had an opening to chat with a good-looking girl and she wasn't about to pass that up, even if it was only for a moment. "Oh, you mean that celebration at the new cultural center, right?" she asked innocently. "I saw something about that in the news. Looks like kind of a big deal. I mean, lots of local celebs and stuff." She tried to seem casual; showing too much interest might be dangerous. Even with the mask she wore, there was always a worry at the back of Molly's mind that her alter-ego would be found out.

Samantha looked and listened to the female behind the counter and smiled, laughing when needed.

She wondered about the event tonight and wondered if she should really go or not. "Yes, at the cultural center." She said with another soft but this time bright smile. "Yeah, I overheard some people talking about it and I just want to go and check it out." She continued while looking back up at the menu. "But, I didn't come up here to bore you. Let me get a Mocha Latte please." Her voice was sounding more and more sweetly. She dug around her pocket for her money and waited for the female to give her the total.

"So, are you going to celebration tonight? If so, maybe I can catch a ride with you, if it's not too much trouble." She asked innocently while thinking about it. 'This is crazy. She doesn't even know this female and the female don't know her.' "Never mind, that was a stupid thing to say. I'm sure that I'll find it." She said while handing the female the money and grabbing her Mocha Latte. She nodded towards them then took a quick sip. "Keep the change and have a great day."

Samantha turned heel and started to walk away, wondering if she was going to be stopped.

Molly hesitated for a moment as the customer departed. On a flare of impulsion, she called after her. "Maybe I'll see you there."

Why the hell did she say that, she wondered. Was she trying to seem cool? Was she just looking for another excuse to grab this girl's attention? There was no way her civilian persona would be able to pass as the kind of person to attend such an event, and it's not as if she'd be recognized in costume. But it would probably be fairly crowded there, right? So at least if the young woman returned she could just say she was caught up in the crowd. Hopefully she wouldn't be called out on this claim.

Molly shook her worries from her mind for the moment, wished the customer well, and returned to work. She was suddenly anticipating that night's events with anxious excitement. Polliwog was really going to have to come through for her tonight.

Samantha turned around and nodded towards the female behind the counter while holding up the cup in the process. She walked out of the cafe and continued to walk down the street. She sipped on her delicious beverage while standing at the end of the street, walking for the sign to change. It finally did and she proceeded on walking across the street.

Samantha's eyes were locked on a hooded figure before her as she then watched him take a woman's purse and started running towards her. She dropped down and gave the male a leg sweep, causing him to fall on his face. She held her foot on the male's back and reached down to retrieve the woman's purse. "Here you go, Ma'am." She said while handing the female her purse. The female hugged her and gave her a twenty dollar bill. "Oh no, I can't." Samantha pleaded for the woman to take the cash back but she had walked away.

The police came and took the perpetrator away. Samantha had somewhat of a Martial Arts background, so she knew how to handle her own and even the people she loved, or seen done wrong. She was just ready for the night to get here, which wasn't far off by the time on her watch. She just hoped that she'll get to see that behind the counter female there tonight.

That night, Polliwog peered in on the party through a skylight on the roof. She wore a costume and mask of various shades of green, adorned with a logo shaped like a lilypad. Her mask was fitted with mirrored goggles, which she adjusted like a camera lens to get a better look at what was happening below.

All seemed to be going well, but she took careful note of the attendees interactions. The high-society world was always filled with drama, and among the guests below were a few competing politicians; mayoral candidates, city chairpeople facing certain accusations by the media, and such; so the tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife. Polliwog didn't trust it for a second.

She unlocked and descended swiftly through the skylight, going unnoticed far above the crowd, making sure to activate its "special features". The gloves she wore released a tacky, glue-like substance from the palms and fingertips. With great care, Polliwog inched her way across a beam on the ceiling and swung down onto the nearest ledge, completely shrouded by shadow. She took a second to balance herself, then readjusted her goggles to hone in on the guests individually.
