Hi there FireCat, and welcome to RPGateway!
We are glad to have you here, that much can be assured.
Just take a look around the site, familiarise yourself, get a feel for the place, get an idea how things are done in regards to the RPing.
In general, unless otherwise stated, you can jump into most RPs at any time, or of course, start your own if you so wish.
For good tips on Role Playing, you can try An Introduction To Role Play or Role Playing Games.
Along with that, you may possibly want to check out the RP Academy as a more hands on approach to learning.
And, as a writer, you may also be interested in the Growth forum which has a lot of things aimed specifically at writers and those who wish to improve their literary skills.
I hope that gives you a good start; but, should you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact myself or any other of the highly capable Moderators and Admin, they are all grwat, friendly people. We will do whatever we can to help you.
And most importantly, have fun and enjoy your stay here at RPGateway.
