For the twelfth time in a row, Jerry managed to get the peanut into the plastic cup without even taken time to aim. This time the cup wobbled and fell over, breaking the near silence on embarkment gate 14. The other gates to the left and right were also deserted. Little wonder, 2 'o' clock in the morning wasn't the best time to be recieving people for such an auspacious expedition.

Jerry had contested the timing of the flight. He had hoped to make it something a bit more dynamic, a bit more showy. No publicity of course, all the students had been made to agree to keep quiet about the trip until after they returned. That in itself was a shame. It would have been a wonderful PR opportunity for Marius-Jacobs to have been able to plaster the news channels with all this young potential being flown off into deep space, with the expectation of later returning with tales of hitherto unseen technology and scientific discoveries.

Well, he thought to himself, it just sucks that it has to be this way. The graveyard shift at the spaceport, rushing the poor kids through some hasty last-minute health and safety checks, then ushering them onto the shuttle to meet each other for the first time when all they probably wanted to do was hit the hay.

A few chairs down, Abi tapped away at a small laptop device, checking the final list of respondants. Fifteen invitations were extended, and there were only four names that were finally accepted onto the venture. Their majors were a bit of a surprise, no doubt Jerry had had a hand in it. He knew the sorts of tales he wanted these students to come back with, and he knew the aspects that would most wow the public.

"Any chance you could stop that now?" she said without looking up. The peanut thing was getting irritating.

"Sure sure," Jerry said, his incorrigible smile plastered still to his face. "They should be arriving soon anyway. Medi-check's only supposed to take forty minutes."

The two of them eyed the door that led to the medical centre, and awaited the arrival of the students.
