"Um... yes and no. I'm not a business man, Nikki, you're right on that, but there is a first time for everything, and your mother's Carnival needed the help." He sighed. "I'm your mother's new business partner, er.. and I guess yours if you still want to be part of the Carnival and all. In exchange, your mother has a top of the line lawyer- which I would have given to her without her signing the contract. These are bonus checks for each of the employees, one thousand five hundred dollars in each of these cheeks," he said, holding up the stack for her to see. Nikki raised her eyebrows. Alexander had taken over the carnival? Well, that was a relief. Nikki didn't want to have that on her shoulders. Plus, she didn't plan to spend her life running a carnival.

"The carnival was a good place, and it can be a great place again. Emily will have to have something to come back to, and yes, I don't want her to have any jail time either. She saved our lives, and that should account for something." Alexander was looking at Nikki a bit nervously. "Nikki, I'm a silent business partner... I have no say with what goes on, I simply pay for the bills."

"Oh, thank God," Nikki breathed, clapping a hand on Alexander's shoulder. "I really had no idea how I was going to tackle that problem. Thanks a bunch, buddy. I really appreciate it. Anyway, I think I'm going to go visit Emily... Hopefully, I'll see you around." Nikki began walking to the door, waving goodbye.

As she exited the bank, Nikki took a deep breath of the fresh air. It was around four-o'-clock in the afternoon. Nikki straddled her motorcycle and gunned it. She sped down the street, agilely weaving through the downtown traffic. At last, Nikki came to a stop at the police station. She walked inside, helmet under her arm, and went up to the front desk.

"Ah, yes, I'm Nikki Montoya." The new last name fell flawlessly off her tongue. She had decided to adopt her grandfather's surname- she had determined to go down to the city hall and change it legally. It had taken about an hour to wait through the lines, and Nikki had to call James Blackwell in order to get him to send his signature over the internet, but she was now officially Nicole Montoya. It felt refreshing to say it out loud.

"I'm here to see Emily," she continued. The officer behind the desk raised on eyebrow.

"Emily Martin? She's already had one visitor today. Come back tomorrow, kid," he said, looking back down to read his magazine. Nikki glared. She was going to see Emily. End of story. Nikki clicked her nails on the top of the desk. The man looked up, impatient.

"What? I told you, only one visitor per day. Now scat, before I have to escort you out," he snapped. Nikki was wearing an indifferent face.

"You know," she said, examining her nails, "Emily is my mother... how unfortunate that a poor girl can't see her mother once, before said woman faces jail time." The officer's attitude did not change. Nikki hadn't expected it to.

"Sad story. Now, get out." He gestured to the door. Nikki just leaned further on the desk. She looked him in the eyes.

"I would suggest you let me see her..." Nikki said lightly.

"Or what? You gonna cry to daddy?" the officer snickered. Nikki shrugged, taking a step back from the desk. She held up her hands, as if in surrender.

"Na... I guess I'm just gonna leave. Have fun finding your keys, buddy." Nikki turned and started walking to the door. There was a pause, then she heard the squeak of the cop's chair as he stood up.

"Hey, wait! Give me back my keys, you brat!" The officer hurried after her and grabbed her arm. Immediately Nikki pulled a face of pain, looking directly at the security camera in the ceiling corner. She looked as if she was about to cry.

"Hey, what's with you? I know I'm not hurting you!" the officer said angrily. Still making the absurd face, Nikki looked at the officer.

"Yeah, but the camera doesn't know that. I could go to the paper with an assault story. You'd be fired," Nikki murmured, pretending to try and yank her arm from the officer's grip. Instantly, the man let go and backed away from her.

"You wouldn't dare," he hissed, eyes wide. Nikki nursed her uninjured arm, giving the camera in the corner full view.

"Oh, I would," she replied innocently. Groaning, the man pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Fine. C'mon." He turned around and led her to the back of the station. Nikki smiled smugly. As he reached a closed door, he looked at Nikki.

"I need my keys to open this, you know," he said. Nikki took the stolen keys from her pocket and tossed them to the officer. The door was unlocked with a click, and the officer pushed it open. Nikki's eyes landed on the ragged-looking Emily.

"Hey... mom." Nikki smiled.
