Jack and Marge Johnson owned one of the biggest farms in Grenfell, they were an elderly couple whose ancestors were some of the first settlers in this part of the United States, they had family which stretched all the way back to the Mayflower. Most of their time was spent sitting on their front porch in their rocking chairs gazing out over their crops of prize-winning corn. By this time in the season the stalks of corn were as high as a man standing on his tippy toes, and even several inches above that. Jack and Marge knew that it would soon be time to cut down their crops, take them to the market, and sell them for the best price that they could possibly get. They of course no longer did any of the hard work around the farm, leaving that instead to helpers that they would have hired each season. Over the years they have had dozens of people working for them, both longtime residents, passersby, and even the occasional wino in desperate need of money to buy himself some booze.
