--Later that night--

Angel gnawed on a chunk of bread she'd snagged from the mess hall, enjoying the opportunity to stretch her legs without running into the other crewmen. She'd missed the meeting below deck as she'd still been on duty, but had heard enough from the men chattering about their new mission as they headed off to their bunks. Several short months ago, she'd have been thrilled for the chance to go on a new adventure, but now her enthusiasm was dulled by the overhanging threats of war and destruction. It seemed everywhere they went, disaster seemed to follow close behind, and though she hated to sound cynical, the Half-Blood couldn't ignore the the nagging feeling in the back of her mind that something was coming. Shivering out of cold and discomfort, she strode over to the ship's rail and leaned her elbows on the polished wood, gazing out into the night. It always seemed so peaceful, as if time just stopped then and there. Relieving herself of her internal stress for a moment, the lookout barely noticed as she started quietly singing one of the old pirate songs her father used to sing to her.

"The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones
The skies be ours
And by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam

Yo ho
All hands
Hoist the colors high
Heave ho
Thieves and beggars
Never shall we--"

The last note of the chorus caught in Angel's throat as her eyes flickered to something in the distance. She could've sworn she'd seen movement. Maybe it was just a sky-whale that'd been separated from it's pod, or some other creature of the Cloudsea. Or maybe… Not willing to take chances, the Half-Blood reached into her pocket and drew out her father's spyglass. The thing was older than she was, easily, but the lens was still clear and reliable as ever. Bringing it up to eye level, the girl searched the horizon for anything out of place. So far, nothing to report. Perhaps she'd just imagined she'd seen something. After all, her nerves had been on edge lately, so it was bound to effect her judgement sooner or later.

No sooner has she begun to have her doubts when the gaze of the spyglass ghosted over something clearly out of the ordinary. Scrambling to find it one more, Angel was finally able to spot it again and was not disappointed. A mere few leagues away, moving silently and undetected through the clouds and darkened sky, was a ship. And it was coming fast. Her first assumption, obviously, was an attack, but Angel forced herself not to jump to conclusions before she had adequate proof. Unfortunately, that's exactly what she found when she got a good look at the colors it was running. Not a ship from one of the sky cities, but definitely not pirates either. At least, not the usual kind. Now, the flag on their mast was nothing but a red square of canvas, but that was more than enough for identification.

Wasting no time, she slammed the spyglass back into her coat and raced to the alarm bell, giving it several loud rings. "All hands on deck!! Enemies sighted off the starboard! Move your asses, guys, we're under attack!!"
