"I hadn't expected the room to be all made up like this," he admitted with a laugh. He had come prepared to make another two or three trips back into town. "Thanks a ton. I just got to get my stuff."

Kain said his good nights and headed outside to the car, from which he retrieved a box or two and a small suitcase, though there was a staggering number of other pieces of luggage. The boxes were fairly heavy, as they contained his texts and novels, but it was nothing that he could not handle. If he struggled, he told himself, he would not last too long on the farm.

The sun had gone down by the time Kain arrived, and he was already tired from the long drive out to the farm. However, it would be impolite of him to head to bed without introducing himself to Mr. Flame's daughter, and he elected to spend a few hours reading and studying instead of sleeping.
