He moved slowly away from the girl - afraid that he would never see her again, yet terrified that he would. Around him, the rain fell steadily from the dark clouds above, filling the air with tiny crystal tears. The shuffle of movement behind him made him hesitate as she moved toward his ragged figure.

"Samuel. . ."

The sound of his 'human' name caused him to turn, and he saw her stumble on the stony road.

"Why. . ." She gasped, a sob breaking free from her lips, as if it was all too much. "Why didn't you kill me? Why did you spare me when I could feel your breath and teeth against my neck?"

Ephraim stared at her, his features stoic and non-expressive. At the sight of the strength in her eyes, despite all that had happened to her, he cocked his head curiously to the side and continued to look on in wonder.

Taking a deep breath, she spoke once again, her knees tremling slightly. "What are you?" Her voice was soft, and he understood why she asked.

In a low voice, just barely heard over the patter of rain, he started," I am. . ." He broke off suddenly, almost ashamed to admit to her what he was. But seeing the determiniation in her eyes, he finished. "I am a vampire."
