Ellie’s ears swiveled, one focused on the shepherd in front of her, and the other taking in the sounds of Gidon’s scuffle coming from somewhere behind her. She stood her ground, lowering her head and glaring up at the other dog. It was difficult to ignore the anger she felt radiating from all around her, the intensity of it building to a slight tension headache that slipped down into her shoulders.

Her fur bristled as her lip curled, twitching once or twice before she relaxed. “If you know what’s good for you,” she said in a low voice, “You will turn around and leave.”

The sudden absence of sound from behind her had her anxiety doubling, and she chanced a glance over her shoulder to make sure that Gidon was okay.

He was certainly not okay.

But what could she do?! Here she was, warding off the shepherd while Gidon was getting aimed at. If she ran for the hunter, he’d probably get shot, and if she just stood there, he’d get shot too!

And that was when the pup launched herself at the hunger.

Her distraction had pulled her attention away from the shepherd for too long, and she still didn’t think to turn back to face him. Her eyes were on the pup, stance shifting as she prepared to sprint to the young pup’s rescue.
