The child sat stiffly on the dry, sandy ground. His knees were tightly pressed together against his chin, his thin arms wrapped around his legs and locked them into place. An old battered book laid flat at his feet, the stained pages fluttering in the gentle breeze. A few centimetres away from the book was a hole, a splatter of red ants surrounded the area. They seemed totally oblivious to they boy as they continued to rummage in between the rubble and dirt. Those who were successful, raised their loot with pride before scurrying back to their home. A trail of small red ants were already marching in and out of the hole; particles of food snugly in between their pinchers. Those who had bigger earnings, had to drag it behind them. Many of the individuals were lifting seeds, Cray watched in fascination as several ants worked together to heave a limp spider and yet still have the ability to narrowly avoid any obstacles in their way.

Once the team disappeared into the hole, Cray brought the forlorn book closer to him and flicked through the pages. The child's eyes narrowed as he abruptly stopped on the selected chapter. The first page was filled with a bordered sketch and a large fancy title underneath:

"The Red Harvester Ant."

Cray stroked the page with affection before continuing to read.

"The main food source for red harvester ants usually consists of seeds, which they hoard in great numbers, hence their name.
Red harvester ant nests are characterized by a lack of plant growth and small pebbles surrounding the entrance to the tunnel, which usually descends at a pronounced angle. Hulls of seeds may however be found scattered around the nest. Three to eight trails typically lead away from the mound, like "arms". These trails are used by ants to collect and bring food back to the mound..."

The boy was to busy with reading, that he didn't realize the large tear appearing in the sky above him. Even the large sonic boom that rung his ears would not persuade him into looking up.

"Red harvester ants can be aggressive, and have a painful sting that spreads through the lymph nodes, sometimes causing reactions, especially in animals allergic to their venom. They can also-."

What was this voice that seemed to penetrate every nook and cranny of his mind? Cray was annoyed that something had distracted him from reading but there was something about this silky voice that piqued his interest.

"Kyuun."

He heard a roar from above. Cray lifted his chin to see a massive demonic creature clawing its way out of a hole in the sky. The black-haired child wanted to have as much distance between him and that monster as possible but he couldn't move. He was frozen to the ground somehow. Cray dropped his gaze and, to his horror, discovered hoards and hoards of Harvester ants crawling over the book and onto his legs. He desperately tried to shake off as many of them as possible but they just seemed to keep coming. Something else had invaded his thoughts now, it wasn't the feminine voice before but perhaps a hundred in unison, seeping into every crevice of the small boy's head. It was only one word that was being said over and over again, and yet it caused Cray's entire body to quake with fear.

"Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill!"

A whimper escaped from his throat as the ants made their way to his face, scuttling over his lips and across his cheeks. Cray clung to his skin but it was too late, the ants had reached his eyes. It wasn't long before all he could see was red.
