Star Light followed Nouvell through the trees. She recalled Jessica calling out to her. What was it she had said, 'Aren't you supposed to choose?' Star Light shook her head. Jessica must have known that a Wolf choses a Wolf Master, Sacred or not. Humans were the lowest in Wolf Tribe hierarchy. Only Wolves had the knowledge and wisdom to choose those who deserved more respect. They were simply essential to allow messages to travel to other people in the Tribe. Everybody knows that, she told herself, putting Jessica's question out of her mind.

Shadow padded back to his den. He could smell Star Light and Nouvell, but ignored them. What good will following them do? It will make Star Light suspicious and I won't gain anything. That's what he told himself, but he followed anyway.
