District Two
Alexi Wainwright
The Black Sheep

The Reaping; a time of great grief. A time of glory and fame! Or simply, someone's worst nightmare.

A pair of icy blue orbs stared outside of a window, with a distressed feel to them. The orbs nervously shifted from side to side, picturing the events that would take place in a matter of hours. The owner of the eyes, Alexi, held her breath as she felt her body shiver with fear. The pervious events caused her great discomfort and she could not believe what she had said. Why? Why would she do that?

Flash back:

Alexi stood against a wall, waiting for the training academy to start. She stared down lazily at the black and blue suit that she had to wear. The suit was ridiculously tight, and it did not help in the ‘protection’ department. Well, one could say that the purpose for the suit was to never get hurt, but that is beside the point.

Alexi toyed with her hands as the hall started to become crowded. The students who would be involved in the reaping had a particular aura to them. The others, simply, waited for their time of ‘glory’. Alexi was not one of those people. She wanted to live a simple life. No reaping, no fame, no glory, no nothing. She just wanted to become a simple house wife, and teach her children that dying for their district doesn’t make them honorable. It makes them stupid.

The sounds of excited children filled the room. It was obvious that I few of them would be fighting to take the spots in the reaping. Often times, the official would allow volunteers to rise their hand first. There was no need for a bowl filled with names, if ever individual was willing to participate. Alexi continued to stare away from the group when she heard a pair of familiar voices. The young male voices seemed to be going through puberty at the time. The voices continue to squeak and crack, as they addressed a particular subject.
Alexi leaned up from against the wall and walked towards the noise. The room started to quiet down as the fight continued.

“Shut up! How can you say that about someone’s sister?” a fairly young male yelled at a younger male. It seemed like a simple fight of testosterones, but it was more than that. Those were Alexi's younger brothers; the twins, as she liked to call them. The identical twin to the first kid seemed ready to fight the older male.

“I’m sorry that your sister is a wuss! She had several chances to fight in Games, but she didn’t. She’s afraid.” Alexi stared in horror. Why would someone even think about her? She wanted to keep herself low-key, so that no one would speak to her about the reaping or Games. Still, there was always one bully in the group.

“No she won’t! My sister will volunteer and win the games! Don’t you dare say that! We know she will.” The room was silent now. No one uttered a word, or even moved. Instead, their eyes looked over at the blond girl. Alexi glanced around, not sure what to do. ’Why’ was the only questioned that flashed through her mind.

Her siblings ran up to her and stared into her blue eyes as if they were pleading to her. Alexi dropped down and hugged the boys.

“Okay” was all she could muster, before closing her eyes to pray.

“I am going to volunteer for the Reaping.”

End of flashback

Alexi heard a soft knock on her door, before it slowly opened. Two boys walked into the room with their heads down. They stared up wide eyed at their sister. Alexi waved them over and patted the space next to hear.

“Hey buddies. Why the long face?” She questioned the pair.

“Mom and Dad are talking about how you are going to chicken out tomorrow. We told them that you wouldn’t, but all they said was that you would and we would have to fight in the next one to uphold our family name and stuff.” The pair stared at their sister with great sadness. In some way, they knew they had damned their sister to death. Alexi pulled the pair into a quick hug and kissed their heads. Her eyes grew teary, but no tears fell. Was this how it felt to be pushed over the edge? In the end, she could just refuse to volunteer, but what would happen to her siblings? What would they learn?
In a sense, Alexi had accepted that she would die if she volunteered for the Games. She…just knew. However, she needed to teach the boys an extremely tough lesson. Alexi accepted her fate, and she was ready for what would happen. Pulling away from the boys, Alexi quietly reassured the boys that she would do her best tomorrow and she was ready to fight. The pair seemed satisfied with her answer and she shooed them off to bed.

The young girl glanced out the window one last time. With sadden eyes and an even sadder heart Alexi let a tear slip.

“What have I gotten myself into?”
