Alexi Wainwright
The Black Sheep
‘Flowers…oh how I love flowers. I would have flowers at my wedding. It would have been wonderful.’ Alexi thought as she stared at herself in the mirror. Her hair was a mess, sticking out in every which way, and there were dark circles under her eyes. The white of her eyes had a nice pink tint to them, due to the tears she shed that night.
Why would she cry? Why would she even consider volunteering one would ask? Well, it was simple. Alexi had thought about it all night long. She could just not volunteer and become the laughing stock of District two. She did not care. She wanted to live! However, what would that accomplish? The children of District two does not understand how truly blessed they were.
Look at the other districts. Their names would be chosen out of an old chipped bowl, the children would have a look of horror, and they would ultimately be sentenced to their death. Normally I career would win the games, so other districts wouldn’t even stand a chance. However, children from District one and two would often just volunteer, which meant…a few lucky kids could skate by and…live. That’s what Alexi wanted to do. Her bothers were so gung ho on having her enter, that they did not realize that this was her goal.
The young girl brushed her hair neatly, and pulled it back into a bun. She patted her face, and then pinched her cheeks to add a little color to them. The icy blue eyes continued to stare at the person in the mirror. There stood a young girl, accepting that she would die. Alexi knew what she was doing and what she would have to show her baby brothers. Hopefully, they will understand the message that she would try and convey. Alexi had accepted that she would become a martyr.
Alexi walked down into the kitchen to find her family staring at her. She gave a weak smile, before proceeding to grab food. Her father glared at her, while her mother stared at the food on her plate.
“So, are you actually going to volunteer? If not, then don’t get your bothers hopes up” her father’s bass filled voice echoed. The twins shot a shocked look at their father, before turning back to the older sibling.
“I want you to know that you would bring shame to the family if you did not go. We would have to rely on your brothers to bring honor. At least there are two chances to win.” The room remained silent. Out of the corner of her eye, Alexi saw her mom give a nod of approval. Why did her family become like this? When did glory and fame become such a huge factor in the family?
Alexi sat down at the table and ate her food quietly, before she mumbled
“I’m going to volunteer don’t you worry. “ The time had come.
