Rex staggered down the empty street, more from exhaustion than any sort of injury, though to say he had made it so far without any scrapes would be a lie. He let his mind reel through the event that had led up to this point, as he kept a weary eye out for any more unwelcome guests.

It had been a normal day. He was in clinicals on a psychiatric rotation, of his third year in medical school. He was used to psychotic patients he had worked his way through college in an emergency room, and he had seen everything from violent to comical, but the patient that walked in the door was not typical. The sunken eyes, glazed expression, drooling, all screamed of some sort of drug use, probably cocaine maybe meth. It was of almost no surprise when the patient started flailing and snapping at the staff, but while the nurses restrained him his arm snapped, very clearly a complete break. The patient showed now response and continued his aggression.

One of the nurses got bitten before they had managed to completely restrain the patient. She went to the ER only to get a quick check out, it became extremely alarming when she started showing signs of the same condition. From there everything continued to spiral out of control. In the end he had been forced to stab an elderly patient through the chest with an IV pole, only to watch in horror as the patient continued to attempt to grab him.

Rex had fled the hospital after that grabbing his backpack and whatever medical equipment he could. He found an ally outside, threw up and then spent the better part of an hour sobbing.

It hadn't been any better in the rest of the city. Everywhere he went these "zombies" were everywhere. he had narrowly escaped several encounters, now he was almost too tired to continue, running on only a few short hours of sleep he had grabbed in an abandoned car and a sandwich he had smuggled out from the hospital lounge, he knew he had to find some sort of shelter now or he was going to collapse, zombies or no zombies.
