When the Magistrates are dead we will need to maintain as much power as possible over the people as well. Two entities are greater than one," Sarene Iracot said. Her eyes bore into the reflection of his own gaze.

"Let us exchange our vows and be married in this very room," the God-Queen said. There need not to be all the bells and whistles of a grand ceremony. None needed to know of the marriage except for the Magistrates, who would be red-faced with absolute anger. The announcement of Calor and Sarene's marriage would upset them and force the Magistrates attention on Sarene. It would give Calor a more open chance to slay them all while in their uproar.

She explained all of this to Calor as she set down her ebony brush.

"The engagement they could deny but a marriage they cannot, especially since I am the God-Queen," Sarene said. She stood and turned to face Calor.

"Now kneel before me and take your vows, not as my vassal, but as my husband."
