Alumaruk stepped as lightly as she could around the people in the square. She had never seen so many humans packed so densely into such a space. They were mostly identical, at least from orc perspective, but a few stood out as unique or hummed with their own special energy.

Like the tones of green among an orc city, human skin could range from ivory to ebony. Alum assumed their coloring said something about the location of their ancestors. They even stood on a height gradient, which to Alum seemed much broader, with humans ranging from puny to practically-orc.

Green-skin wasn’t necessarily rare here, but Alum noticed the wide berth awarded to her and other verdant folk. That’s why she tried to respect human custom and tip-toe around them, even if it would be easier just to kick them all aside.

Civility, she had to remind herself, was literally regulated in human cities. They enacted punishments as if they were all little judges, so irregularly sure of their reason. The wise-women had warned her about human laws. They asked Alum to watch her temper. You couldn’t fight in human cities, even if they clustered about and made annoying spectacles of themselves.

Alum worked her way to a mostly empty spot near the corner of a building and she rested her back against the stone. She closed her eyes and hummed. Calm descended on her like a cool rain. She made a mental note to remember the towering white walls of Kergstien, and the spires that speared the clouds. They would make good imagery in a future poem.

When the orc opened her eyes again, she was able to suppress her anxiety. She had to focus, because Alumaruk was on a mission. Her ancestors had sent her to bring back wisdom and observation from strange lands. They also asked her to find magic, and this simple request made Alum special. The Fazorian Plains were losing power. Every season an orc child was born who struggled to even contact a spirit. The old customs and traditions of her tribe threatened to collapse and leave orc children stranded powerless on the great grasslands.

Alumaruk was the first potential wise-woman made magic hunter. She had no interest in money or a name. She wanted to get her hands on raw power, and her first objective was to find someone else seeking it and convince them that she deserved the chance.

The orc stretched her muscular arms above her head and peeled away from the warm stone wall with a grunt. She was ready to try the crowd again. Alum didn’t disappear into the throng so much as barrel into it, and then she was on her way toward the tiny human booths. Hopefully they were selling more than empty promises.
