Bethany

When she woke it was early afternoon, she could feel it. However, when her eyelids fluttered open she found herself in the dark. I can’t see anything. Why is it dark? She wondered suddenly worrying that something had happened as she sat up. Silk sheets slid down her body and she touched them gingerly. [i]Awfully fancy stuff if I’m dead… she thought touching the fabric gingerly with her fingers.

Suddenly memory washed back of this fabric tight in her fingers, her back arching her to Andrei’s touch and gasped words. Beth shivered at the delightful memory. The man hadn’t lied – she’d never be able to forget that night.

Now that her eyes had adjusted she could see the faint outline of the man resting next to her. For all the world he looked like he was sleeping, but when she paid attention she could tell that he wasn’t breathing. Vampires didn’t need to breathe.

Slipping from the bed she found a wall and used it as a guide to walk carefully to a door. Pushing it open she found herself in a bathroom dimly lit from a window installed behind a stand-alone bathtub. Closing the door behind her, she turned the light on she saw that it was richly decorated in masculine greys with some subtle green accents. The bathroom seemed to come in parts – when you walked in the door you were closest to a toilet and a sink and then a set of stairs that led up to the tub.

Pretty bathroom,” she murmured walking up the flight of three stairs. Once she was standing beside the bathtub she could see the shower – it had been built in behind the wall the toilet and the sink were against. But the tub was what caught Beth’s eye. Running her hand along it she smiled to herself. “Well he is going to be asleep all day. I don’t think he’ll mind if I have a little soak.

Turning on the tap she messed with the temperature until it was warm enough and went about other bathroom necessities. She didn’t bother looking for bubble bath – men who lived alone never had bubble bath. Instead she poured in a cap-full of the body wash she found in the shower.

Soaking in the tub after a night of intense passions was divine. She had leeway to relax, her mind replaying the mind-blowing romp. Beth couldn’t deny that she’d definitely want to do that again.

But slowly her thoughts turned to the envelope Andrei had shown her. Her house had been invaded by soldiers who, she could only assume, belonged to whoever was hunting her. It was lucky that Brandon was away with that Kat lady – that meant he wasn’t in danger. But that still meant that some strangers were pawing over her stuff. Well she couldn’t have that…

Beth frowned as she got out of the tub and let it drain.

Drying off with one of the green towels she hung it on the door and walked back into the bedroom, using the lingering sunlight from the window to light her way to the closet. There she pulled out a pair of black sweatpants and a blue and white striped pullover sweater. They would do, she decided as she slid her cell phone into the pocket.

Closing the bathroom door again she felt about for the door to the hallway and slipped out. Tiptoeing down the stairs she found her shoes, a pair of black flats, and slid them on her feet. I’m just going to go there, get the photo, and come back. He wont even know I was gone, she thought to herself, remembering that the man had bionic hearing and fearing that even in his sleep he’d find away to stop her.

Swiping a set of keys from the many on the hook she walked outside and around the side of the house where she vaguely remembered getting out of a car last night. She clicked the unlock button to find out which, out of the 13 cars there were, she had picked. A shiny black Camaro winked back at her. Lucky Me!She grinned and slid inside.

The drive to the house was uneventful, unless you count watching a skinny blonde girl sing Backstreet Boys to the radio, complete with car dancing as exciting. She parked down the road from her house and went through the backyards of her neighbours to get onto the property.

They wouldn’t expect that. From the outside the house looked fine – they would expect her to just walk in the front door.

So she propped open a window in the basement and slipped inside. They purposely kept this one window open in case someone forgot their keys. Landing lightly on the carpet she paused, waiting and listening for movement in the house. Beth and Liz had spent her whole life trying to creep around this place without her brother hearing her (how else to sneak cookies?) – she could surely move around easily enough to not attract the attention of human ears.

She heard footsteps, one pair. But that meant nothing. So she crept up the stairs, avoiding the creaky step and opened he door a crack. Beth watched as a man looking like he came out of a black ops video game rounded the corner and started talking to someone.

“When is that bitch coming home? We’ve been here since yesterday.”

“I don’t know, Jim, we have to wait until she gets here though or Marcel will have our heads.”

Marcel?

Banking the name for later she eased out of the door and slipped up the flight of stairs to the upstairs of the house. Once she was safely in her bedroom Beth allowed herself to breathe again. Leaning against the door she stared out of her bedroom window at the ravine in the backyard, letting her mind wander. The sun was setting. How many nights had she and her twin gazed out this window talking about boys and their dreams?

This might be the last time I gaze out of this window, she thought sadly reaching to her dresser to pick up a picture of Brandon and the twins. She hugged it to her chest and bit her lip when it began t quiver.

Then her phone began to ring, chiming loudly as it vibrated against the door. Bethany squeaked in shock and jumped away from the door, turning to face it. Already she could hear the men running up the stairs. Beth reached over and locked the door, backing away from it with wide eyes. Reaching in her pocket she hit the answer button on the phone and brought it up to her ear.

I’m a little busy at the-

WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?

It was Andrei. He knew she was gone and he sounded furious. She nearly started crying. Dealing with his anger was better than whatever this Marcel guy had planned for her.

I-I’m at home,” she stuttered and winced as someone threw himself against the door. It rattled but it held. But for how much longer? Bethany dropped down to her knees on the floor and started clearing away the rug. She’d drawn a circle there for her spell work.

For the love of Christ Bethany! That was the one place I told you not to go!” Andrei swore and she heard a door slam in the background. “From the sounds of it you’ve gotten yourself into a mess too!

You got me into the mess! I was doing just fine until you called and alerted the whole house that I was here!” Bethany snapped back.

Bethany I don’t-” Andrei had started to growl but the door suddenly burst open.

Bethany dropped the phone and stared wide eyed at four soldier-clad men in her doorway. They said something but Beth didn’t hear them because she laid her palm flat on the circle and charged it with a barrier spell. Wind picked up from below her, the spell super charged by vampire power and she cried out in shock as the soldiers were fired back into the walls. Once the power stabilized she was panting in the circle with an obvious effort to bend the power to her will. The soldiers were getting to their feet now and levelling guns to aim at her. Did they mean to kill her or tranquilize her? She couldn’t be sure – she only hoped her spell would stop whatever ammunition they were packing.

One however spoke up. “Don’t bother wasting your shots. Just wait until she tires herself out. Sex Witches aren’t all that powerful for long.”

I just have to keep this up until Andrei gets here, she thought to herself grimacing as the magic drained from her.
