It seemed her words may have worried her cousin. Mai continued to watch Raiden with thoughtful eyes. Before long the phone call was completed just as she had apologized. Raiden’s next actions made Mai a bit nervous as he still hadn’t said anything about her cleaning the apartment while he was tutoring. Although the smile from earlier dissuaded her from thinking Raiden was upset she couldn’t help but be nervous.
"We're living together so there's nothing wrong with you being familiar with my schedule." His voice was gentle so Mai relaxed if just a bit. “Alright.” giving a single word of acknowledgement. Now that they had finished their dinner Mai paused from getting up as Raiden continued. "So, yeah. I'll be out tutoring someone at 12:30 in the local library... it's my job sometimes." Now that he made it clear of what he was doing Mai didn’t quite feel as bad about listening in, even if he thought there was nothing wrong with it. Getting ready to gather the dishes Raiden beat her to it. "I'll put these away and you can go up to your room. Goodnight, Mai."
A bit surprised by his words, she wondered if they’d ever be able to have long conversations like they did when they were little. “Ah y-yes thank y-ou Raiden and go-goodnight.” smiling a bit Mai put the apron back in the kitchen before going off to her room. Closing the door behind her Mai leaned against the door for a little bit, her small hands clasped behind her back as they were pressed against the door and her back. Rubbing her eyes Mai was surprised to find that they were wet. Blinking a few times Mai quickly went to the mirror by her dresser and saw that there were tears trickling down her cheeks. They weren’t the kind that was caused from great pain but rather from frustration.
Sniffling a few times she patted her cheeks and gathered her things before heading to the bathroom. From the looks of things Raiden was in his room since it was closed, so she quickly went to take a shower. She wasn’t in there for very long and was out just as soon as she came in. Wearing nothing but an over-sized t-shirt that had a bunch of animals as the design, Mai carried her shower things and slipped back into her room. Putting them away Mai stood in front of the mirror again and frowned at her reflection. Combing her hair with her fingers she was happy she had cut it but she’d have to get a proper haircut soon. Bright orange eyes then looked to the rest of her body. Pinching the cloth that hung from her body it did not contour to her body as it would to a girl with a body more their age and for a moment Mai felt ashamed for having such a scrawny body. Realizing her thoughts Mai bite her lip and then her finger, “I-I’m not l-like Aunty.”
Her aunt had quite the desirable body but Mai knew she had once envied it when she was smaller. Not that she had grown much since her younger years with Raiden. Mai now saw the truth that came with having that sort of body. At least I won’t be bothered. Finally turning away from the mirror Mai slipped into her bed and stared up at the ceiling. Turning to her side she stared at the wall that she shared with Raiden. Reaching out to touch it Mai thought of maybe knocking on the hollow divider but thought against it. He could be sleeping. If her memory served her right they used to knock on the wall whenever they slept in separate rooms. Releasing a tired sigh Mai turned her back to the wall and closed her eyes, letting sleep take her away from this dreaded reality.
