Marvel Universe Roleplay

Note to Self: Must get into contact with The Afterman before initiating!!

A Marvel Universe Roleplay based on the concepts presented in a roleplay I once participated in, Infinite Earths.

The basic idea, is to allow the participating players to assume the role of any character that can be found in the Marvel Universe. Although the roleplay will not follow any of the preestablished canon from any of the comics. The players will be formulating their own stories based on the characters and themes chosen from the Marvel Universe.

An example of what I mean is possible in the realms of this roleplay. Lets say you choose to play as Spider-Man. You can do the normal origin of the character, Peter lost his parents at a very young age, and so was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in their place. He grew up, not being very popular in school because of his talent and fondness for academics, especially science. As a high schooler, this passion for science led Peter to attend an science expo, where he was bitten by a radioactive spider. The bite transformed Peter's body, giving him the proportionate strength and agility of a spider. At first he believed he could use this talent to become a spectacle and earn some cash. So he designed a costume and a device to launch webs of his own creation and became a novelty act on TV. In an act of indifference he ignores a fleeing thief who goes on to rob from Uncle Ben, killing him in the process. This traumatic event triggers a new sense of responsibility within Peter to dedicate his amazing powers to stopping crime and saving lives.

Of course you do have creative freedoms and do not have to restrict yourself to following the basic canon. For instance you can do little things to tweak it such as, Peter was bitten by a Genetically Altered Spider instead of a Radioactive Spider. Or instead of becoming a Novelty Act, Peter attempted to make use of his superior athleticism in the world of Professional Wrestling. These are just some examples of the literally dozens of tweaks that can be made to your Spider-Man story. Of course there will always be extra points towards originality in creating your origin story.

For example, here's an idea of a tweak that I have for Spider-Man's origins. In the story Uncle Ben's murderer was always unidentified or in some continuities he was named Carradine. Well in my idea, Uncle Ben was murdered by none other than, Marvel's infamous killer, Cletus Kasady. Cletus, being a dangerous and violent psychopath, had no qualms with murdering Uncle Ben for no other reason than simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Cletus could have been stopped at an earlier time by Spider-Man when he saw him being pursued by the cops. Peter, like much of today's youth, saw little reason to become involved and allowed Cletus to run right past him, despite how simple and easy the action would be for someone like him. And like the story goes, Peter comes to find that his Uncle was murdered and when he hunted down the criminal responsible he recognized Cletus from before. Instead of blaming Cletus, he blamed himself for he believed that it was his own apathy that led to his Uncle's death. From that day forth, he decided to become a force for good as the Amazing Spider-Man!

So, like I mentioned there are many chances to add touches or changes to anything while still keeping the core essence if you will. And the changes I personally made have some very interesting future implications. Since those who are knowledgeable about Spider-Man lore would understand that Cletus Kasady is the alter ego of the Spider-Man villain, Carnage. So, when Carnage possibly appears in the player's Marvel-verse, it will have even more impact on Spider-Man's story than it would have been if the player decided to follow the basic canon. This is just but one of the many facets of the roleplay that the player can have fun with!

And of course this isn't limit with just one character but with all of the Marvel Universe. So I would encourage players to find interesting twists and turns when they forge their own stories. Myself, I like to personally intertwine things in fun and interesting ways such as the way I gave a stronger connection between Spider-Man and Carnage that is unique compared to other continuities and iterations of the characters and stories.

As for the overall plot of the roleplay? That is difficult to pen down, considering players can choose from literally any character in the Marvel Universe, whether they choose Spider-Man, or Wolverine, or Iron Man, and since we are starting from all of the characters early careers then it's hard to make an linear storyline. The characters are very separated at first, only really coming together in times of great crisis when one Hero is just not enough. After all the Avengers weren't assembled in a day. So it's really players coming together and brainstorming over individual plots together and roleplaying them out. So alot of communication is needed on this one.
