James blearily cracked his eyes open to look at the clock trying to figure out what had woken him up. It was hard to say if it was his pounding headache, the sunlight streaming through the windows or the fact that his bladder felt like it was the size of a beachball. Well first things first, he thought as he stumbled towards the bathroom.
He was still trying to remember what had happened last night when he hit the shower. The warm water played over him as bits and pieces began to come back to him. They'd just come off a particularly rough shift, it was never fun to run into a room where a girl had tried to hang herself with piano wire. The new guy had just about vomited as they'd gotten her down and into the back of the ambulance. Recoveries like that were the worst, there wasn't anything you could do and all you were left with was a feeling of disappointment and shame. That's how at they had found themselves in a bar at the end of shift; desperately happy to be alive and toasting every good thing they could think of.
As he toweled off and started to get ready he tried not to think of all of that. It was time to get back on shift, so he started to pull himself together and head out the door. That's when he first started to get uncomfortable, as he biked to work he didn't really see too many other people. No one was at the front desk when he got in there but all he could concentrate on by that point was getting his stuff on before he was late.
Once he'd shrugged into his jumpsuit he picked up his fast pack and buckled that on. That was what contained anything he'd need to have directly to hand in an extreme life saving situation. For that reason a lot of people had taken to calling it the "Oh Shit" kit. Walking out the door he realized he still hadn't run into anyone. He figured he'd go check the Ambulance bay and see if the guys were working on something in there. He couldn't find anyone there either but did hear a rythmic banging coming from the inside of one of the vehicles. "Mike I swear to god if you locked the new guy in here we are in so much shit this time." He called out as he walked over to the Ambulance opening the door.
The figure that popped out was incredibly aggressive; smashing the door open before James had even finished pulling it all the way out. In retrospect that was the only thing that saved him as he got pushed to the side as the figure jumped out trailing intestines. James eyes went wide and he just turned and ran. The figure chased him through into the locker room before tripping on one of the benches. James just jumped on it and started kicking anything that came in reach. He'd been in streetfights before in his younger years and you just had to put the other guy down quickly as possible. He staggered out into the street once he was done, still in his jump suit with his fast pack, and retched over the curb.
