"I missed you," Doll replied, keeping her sentences short. It was hard to breathe when she spoke, as though her lungs wouldn't inflate all the way. It took a lot of work to push away everything Maddox had been trying to instill in her. The fear, the panic upon seeing Zero. Her dreams hadn't made it any better, it simply made her mind and heart feel conflicted. "It was lonely." Doll had an odd sense as though she had been floating in her sleep, watching over Zero somehow but that wasn't real, that was just her mind playing games no doubt.
"Alaska?" Doll asked, seeing the snow outside. The daylight had begun to filter in through the small window, the only sign of life in the whitewashed room. Doll reached out as though she wanted to hold his hand, hesitated, put her hand down. She had no right to touch him, not after what she had done. The more she woke up, the easier it was to breathe. Doll wanted to sit up, but that probably wasn't the best idea. Her chest hurt and she was numb from the waist down. Had Doll removed the sheet covering her body she would have seen a surplus of stitches and a few tubes going into her stomach, which was why she was numb.
"What's wrong?" Doll asked, noticing something in Zero's expression. He looked conflicted almost, as though something weighed heavily on his mind. Where was the little boy that looked a lot like Zero? Had he been imagined as well? Or perhaps a ghost. Weirder things have happened, Doll wouldn't doubt it if she began seeing dead creatures.
