The twins received a sneer from the other elf before she departed the group. Caclia felt insulted. Vidari figured Elisabeth just didn't like others-- just like his sister. The two could probably get along swimmingly by commenting on what they disliked about people and their attributes. Simon thanked them before leaving with her. The twins glanced at each other, unsure of what to do. They hovered at the mouth of the alley, while Martellus retreated back into it to think.
A man, dressed in odd garb approached them, though he seemed more interested in Vidari than in Caclia. He spoke in an unknown language, but he seemed to have a friendly tone. Vidari nodded, hoping that would suffice as an answer to whatever the man had said. In his mind however, he was slightly panicked. How were they to learn where they were if these denizens spoke another language. Also, what language did they even speak? Vidari had travelled outside of Centrailia a few times, but he'd never heard this language before. The man looked at him a bit before departing, figuring that the cosplaying elf was socially awkward or didn't know English that well.
Caclia raised an eyebrow at her brother. "What kind of language was that?" she asked him in a low tone. She didn't want their own language to seem unusual. After all, they were trying to blend in. Of course, that would be a difficult task. Vidari merely shrugged. "Well, the other two have left already so I suppose we won't be accompanying them. Perhaps we should follow in their direction? The man, Simon I believe, looks like a scholar. Perhaps he has an idea of what this place is." Caclia shook her head, opposed to the idea of following the other two. The other elf wasn't very friendly-- not that Caclia was either.
"You can follow them, but I'm going in the opposite direction. Head Paladin Martellus should be fine. He told us to go look around the area, so that's what I plan to do." With that being said, the female elf left in the opposite direction that Simon and Elisabeth had gone. Her bow in one hand and helmet in the other, she looked like a true oddity (or a very dedicated cosplayer) in the New York streets. Vidari looked after her, torn at what to do. Simon would have better insight into the strange place around them and Caclia could handle herself, but he had no idea how far away Simon and Elisabeth were at this point. Vidari looked back at Martellus. He considered speaking, but decided against it. The Head Paladin was more than capable of defending himself and he was doing nothing to provoke an attack. The white haired elf quickly darted out of the alley, maneuvering around people to reach his sister.
"Alright, you win, Caclia," he told his sister. "But you shouldn't carry your bow around. It might make one of these people attack us." His sister rolled her eyes. It wasn't like she had an arrow in it or anything. She ignored him and continued walking, glancing around. The buildings were tall and there were odd shapes, presumably some sort of written language, on them. There things and people inside the buildings, googling over clothing and things that Caclia could only guess at. What an odd land this was. Who was their ruler? How had they obtained such wealth? She looked to Vidari, who in turn was looking at the street instead of the buildings. He was amazed by the cars, these boxes on wheels which could move without animal or magic. At least, they seemed they didn't move without magic. To have magic to fuel this many of them would be absurd. Vidari observed the people they were walking with. These people dressed in no armour. Perhaps this was a peaceful kingdom? Yes, it must be for these humans to be comfortable in those clothes. The clothes themselves were odd colours, shapes, and had even stranger embroidery on them.
The twins decided without speaking that they would keep walking straight, only turning when necessary. This way, they could easily get back to Martellus and wouldn't have to worry about being attacked. With so many civilians around, nobody would dare attack them. Unless there were Grandun soldiers here, in which case Vidari and Caclia would fight back in the hopes of protecting these unarmored humans.
They stopped at a corner amongst a crowd of people waiting to cross the street. The carriages without horses zipped by, sometimes making loud noises. Caclia cringed whenever a car horn honked, as it was extremely loud in her ears. This place was so loud and so crowded, how did the citizens live like this? Centrailia had a few crowded spots, but nothing like this. She felt claustrophobic in this sea of people and her mood began to sour. Vidari observed the lights changing colours, noticing that people walked across the large stone pathways when those stone pathways had a red light. It seemed to him like these flameless lights controlled the carriages without horses. How odd. His thoughts were interrupted by Caclia grabbing his wrist and dragging him across the street with the rest of the crowd. Once to the other corner, they were stopped by a teenage girl.
She was much shorter than either of the twins, probably standing at about 5'2". She seemed to be very happy to see them, as she talked hurriedly but in a friendly voice. "You two look awesome! I've seen stuff like this online, but I've never met a cosplayer before!" She was bouncing on her feet slightly, her long curls jumping around as she did. "Can I take a picture with you two?" Of course, the twins had absolutely no idea what she was saying. Seeing as nodding had sufficed as an answer for the man who approached Vidari earlier, he simply nodded and offered a smile to appear non threatening. She squealed in excitement and thanked them, though they didn't know what she was saying. She stopped another human nearby and asked something of her. This woman was dressed strangely as well. While the girl was in similar garb to the man before, this woman wore more restrictive attire. Her skirt ended just above her knees and she wore heels, making her taller than she actually was. She wore a cloak that ended at her hips. It had long sleeves and was well fitted to her body.
The girl exchanged a small rectangular item with the girl before starting to back away. The twins glanced at each other, worried this small box would hurt them. The girl came and stood between Caclia and Vidari. Caclia was attempted to step away from her, but Vidari stopped her with a look. The twins looked at the woman as she spoke, telling them to "smile." Vidari had already been smiling warmly, but Caclia's face remained notably anxious. The woman took another picture, this time with the flash on. Vidari had maintained the same position while Caclia smiled a bit to try and mimic her brother. The twins both began blinking furiously after the flash went off. Had they been blinded? Caclia would have rubbed her eyes, but it would have been difficult with her gloves on and with an object held in either hand. After a few moments the black spot that had formed in their vision as a result of the flash disappeared.
The woman approached them, returning the small box to the girl. The girl looked at it excitedly before turning to show the elves. They were surprised to themselves on the surface of the little box, standing with the girl as they had been moments before. This box, it had captured time! How was that possible? How could a device make an image so precisely and so quickly? Vidari stepped closer to peer at it, but the girl was no thanking them again. She turned and left, leaving the twins utterly confused as to what just happened. Caclia looked at her brother. "That box.. It had us on it. How did it do that? It was so quick..." Vidari merely shrugged, as he himself had no idea how the box had done that. "Let's continue walking." Vidari moved to leave, but Caclia stopped him. She didn't think she'd be needing her bow soon and it was becoming cumbersome to walk with. It bumped against other people and she didn't like other people touching what she owned. She quickly set it into its carrier which was strapped to her back next to her quiver. The two began walking again, making sure they were always next to each other or one in front of the other. It would be so easy to get lost in all these people.
Caclia sighed, utterly confused by where they were. There were so many noises and smells, so many people in strange clothes and buildings with strong lights on them. Strange carriages rumbled down strange roads. She wondered if there were any elves in this land, as they had only seen countless humans. How strange it would be to be one of three elves in this kingdom. The two elves continued down the sidewalk, looking very out of place. In addition to Vidari's visible ears, poking through his white hair, he also carried his staff. It gleamed in the night from the various city lights. The two looked odd, but many assumed they were just cosplaying. The elves walked in silence, observing their new surroundings and trying to make sense of the people and things around them.
