Doll's vision was blurry, vague shapes and outlines the only thing seemingly registering in her brain. Why? She didn't understand. She blinked and slowly, it cleared, outlines taking form and turning into distinct objects. The black dots danced away like fairies on a lake, a person was present in the doorway, like a shadowy ghost dressed in white that blew with the slightest draft. She didn't move, believing it was fiction, that her eyes were playing tricks. Doll blinked, but the ghost remained, tall and brooding, his words drifting to her like music that brushed against her ears.
She pushed the blanket away, still dressed in the nightgown she was meant to drown in. Her legs got tangled, she fell out of bed, but Doll hardly noticed the pain as she wires pulled at her, peeling away from her skin as she stood and walked, no, ran towards Zero, throwing her arms around him, still trembling, quivering like a leaf getting blown over by the wind. The nightgown had ripped, exposing half of her but Doll didn't seem to care much. She held onto him, as though afraid that if she let go he would slip away again. When she had woken up and he wasn't there, when she was taken by Maddox and forced to call his name, hoping to whatever higher power he wouldn't respond so he would stay safe, she had been wishing he were there, beside her.
With Zero there, the nightmares wouldn't dare attack. His warmth and guidance were what she had clung to. She did so now, burying her face in his white shirt, leaving a streak of red blood. "I'm sorry," Doll said, "I keep causing you so much pain. I'm so worthless." If only she could protect him like he had protected her.
