Doll had run out of her own clothes so for now she had to wear a starchy white hospital gown. It was uncomfortable and she could feel a breeze on her back, but Doll decided she would tolerate it because Doctor Atarashi had promised that they would wash her pajamas and bring them back. It was only a matter of time, Doll thought, it was only for today. Doll hugged the unicorn, wondering if she should draw the stuffed animal next. She smiled to herself, wondering what Zero would say the next time she saw him. She couldn't wait, her heart fluttered in that mysterious way and Doll couldn't wait to tell him about everything. Her thoughts cut to that day when he had rescued her and the last time she had been able to walk.
Running over, his arms around him, his warmth embracing her as their lips met. He had been so gentle, there was hunger, but also something else. Her cheeks flushed just thinking about it and she squealed, burying her face in the soft exterior of the unicorn. Luckily she was alone in the room, Grell had gone out to do something and only Doll remained. "I should read," she said quietly to herself and reached for the stack. She was still on the first book, working on a few pages a day. She had made a little marking to keep her place, something Grell and Doctor Atarashi had called a book mark.
"The little dog jumped over the fox," Doll read slowly, clumsily, aloud. She sounded out each word, tasting them on her tongue, letting it linger, then moving on to the next one. So many words, so many new words. What was a fox? Doll looked at the picture illustrating a small red animal and with delight she remembered seeing one skittering across the forest on a cool morning in England. She had only learned the name of the place from Madame Maddox. Doll shivered, she didn't like thinking about that woman, about that day.
The door opened, Doll expected it to be Grell so she didn't look up from her book, instead, reading aloud. "The two animals were very good friends." She ran her fingers across page, tracing the little dog chasing the little fox. Friends. That was the first time Doll had read it and it had been a difficult obstacle to overcome. She did it though, slowly and patiently. Doll looked up, wondering why Grell hadn't come to sit beside her only to realize it wasn't Grell at all but a certain white haired boy. "Zero!" Doll said excitedly, then hesitated. His warmth, it was different, almost reluctant if that made any sense. Still it was Zero and he was here.
With some difficulty, Doll managed to get herself into the wheelchair. Her legs were unwilling to follow any direction aside from the occasional twitch. "You came, I'm so happy you're awake." Doll wheeled herself over to him, her smile bright, eyes sparkling, expression full of warmth.
