It was Josh? Wasn't it?
She heard him shuffling around outside the door and she swallowed when he entered. He came at her and she flinched, she didn't meant to but it happened. She watched him warily before looking down at his hand, holding her phone. "It's doctor Hennings. He wants to speak to you..." She looked up at him, and then gently took it, hoping not to seem afraid. Without another word, he left out again.
"Hello?" She could hear how hoarse she sounded.
"Maddie, are you okay?"
"Y-yea, a little shaken, but I'm okay."
"That's good. I'm sorry, this was a bad idea."
Maddie was silent. "I'll put him in the proper facility, I shouldn't have asked this of you, after what you've been through. I know of a place, it'll be really nice.--." Maddie thought about it as the doctor when on, , Josh in a home, with people who didn't know him, who didn't understand him, who didn't care. No he needed to be here. With someone who loved him.
"No." She said. "No, he needs to be here." She said and coughed. "Excuse me. He needs to be here, I just need to be careful, that's all."
"Madeline, I was wrong to ask this of you, I didn't think he was dangerous."
"Yea, he's dangerous but--" She paused. She said the same thing about Marcus after his first outburst, she always made excuses for him. Was she doing that now with Josh? No. It was Josh, she knew that. She knew he was in there and was just...scared or something. He was nothing like Marcus.
"I can't send him away, I can't, not in some home with people who don't know him, I mean think about it, he recognized me, he knows me and he did this, what do you think he'd do with people he really didn't know? That he never knew. Yes he's dangerous, but he's already here, and can't go anywhere else."
"Madeline, he's not safe. You're not safe."
"He knows me, look, if it happens again, then...Then we'll talk about this home thing, but we've already made some progress." That was a bold face lie, but she had to say something.
"Madeline, Pleas--Wait, Progress, what happened?"
Maddie paused. She wasn't a very good liar, but she had to think of something. "He remembered a band I used to like, It wasn't much but, he remembered." She said, and finally sitting down. "Really? Do you think he'll remember now?"
"I don't know, I can ask him." She pulled the phone from her face. " Josh, could you come here a second?" She called and when he came in. She smiled.
"The doctor wants to talk to you, You remembered something yesterday." She said, and pointed to her shirt, and rose her brows, hoping against hope that he remembered or even knew what the hell she was talking about. "can you tell him what that was." She said and closed her hand over the phone to muffle the sound. "Just answer the question and you might not have to leave." She said quietly. "Okay?" She said and offered him the phone
