“Waves crack with wicked fury against me ship's hull while ocean currents rage as the full moon rises o're the sea."

The sun was setting on another day in Keelhaul Refuge. It had been a rather quiet day, no ships had come nor had any left. The villagers went about their day to day business ensuring the town was well stocked and well fed. The small town had experienced a bountiful trade season and they were eager to continue their steady profitable climb. Dark Ale was selling in multiple barrel loads and the local brewery was hiring left right and center. And so as the sun steadily drew lower on the horizon the small down settled down for the night. Some families drew into their homes while others made their way over to the Third Octopus.

The Third Octopus was the towns only Tavern and hotel. It provided a large open main floor willed with long wooden tables that were usually covered in crumbs and tipped over ale pitchers. While it may not have been the cleanest of places The Third Octopus was famous for its delicious food and most of all the Dark Ale which many had sailed days to try. The Dark Ale Keelhaul was proud to offer held a great deal of secrets around it. While no one knew all of the ingredients or the special brewing processes it is common knowledge that Dark Ale is one of the strongest out there. Men who claim to hold their liquor often can be undone by the second or third drink.

Naturally the Third Octopus is a lively place at night with about two dozen men drinking their way happily into oblivion. It is here the we find a younger serious looking man nursing a single pitcher of Dark Ale. He sits alone in a corner near the bar and keeps his eyes on the crowd. Posted to his table is a small sign that reads:

"Seeking able bodied men for the adventure of a lifetime.
Inquiries and applications accepted at The Third Octopus."

Now this man had spent the better part of the day posting the signs around town hoping that perhaps a few men might be interested in the call of adventure. His name was Malcom Vane and sat and waited patiently for potential crew members. He was dressed in a long leather coat and white tunic shirt that was only half tucked into his dark pants. On his side he wore a belt that held a single pistol and two knives. In his coat pocket there lay a reasonable sum of money as pay for any interested men who were to join his ship.

Malcom had not posted his name on the signs as he knew people would talk and it might dissuade potential crewmen from seeking him out. Vane is seeking a crew? Some would say. Again? Well we know to expect him back soon if memory serves correctly another would laugh. In the past Malcom had tried to put together a crew once before only to have the crew mutiny the first day in when they realized his destination was the Unresting Abyss. He sought his Grandfathers prize, the talisman that had been stolen from Old Man Adder, many called him a fool for even thinking of it, but Malcom was determined. And so there he sat, and there he waited.
