Lune winced, as she indeed recognized his tone of voice. There was no room for argument.
Initially lured in by honeyed words, Lune had realized soon after joining Sinclair that she was in trouble. Years of living amongst the viper's den that was the French aristocracy had taught her to recognize the good sort from the bad. Sinclair was definitely in that latter group. However, she had little choice. Safety was in numbers, and while she could have gone back to Valko, that was even more abhorrent to her. She might be a caged bird in either case, but at least Sinclair's cage was golden, despite the serpent poised to devour her when she left...

Besides, she did not know what kind of ace Sinclair had hidden up his sleeve, what kind of leverage he had over her.

---because undoubtedly, there was something, he was that kind of man---

She put on her best smile, one she had honed back during her life and that had reached perfection in her afterlife and nodded.

This was her 'life' after all and it could be much, much worse if Sinclair wanted it to be so.

The fact that she knew there were fates worse than death made it all that more effective.

She knew that while her mask was a good one, and had probably worked for a while, Sinclair had probably seen through it already. However, she at least hoped that she was useful enough to make discarding her because of her knowledge of his nature a mistake in his eyes.

She saved her game and put the game in her handbag, which she left on the couch. Taking it with her into battle would be counterproductive.
