"Asther, can I tell you something?" Reyna asked, "you're a terrible liar." If Asther had only offered them money, then surely they wouldn't have stuck around. What did she promise them? "Shannon tells me you asked her to become a mermaid," Reyna didn't mind that, not one bit. "In order to live as a mermaid, you must live on Ogygia." Reyna explained, "I'm not sure how Corona and I have survived off of the island, but we were supposed to have turned to shells. It is more than likely that when Mother died, Corona and I absorbed some of her magic. When we left the island, Nami went into a coma and Ogygia is dying because of it." Reyna explained, her tone not condescending, but informative. "I surmise that you must be alive only now because of the magic the combination of all of us mermaids have taken from Nami." Did Asther realize it now? Why she had to return to Ogygia?
"There's no point in dying trying to hand yourself over to science, you'll only live a day or two outside of the island." Asther wanted to talk about mermaids now, about how they were not the peaceful creatures they were made out to be. "Most of the girls are mad, their deaths were an injustice to their kind. Many of us were forced to walk the plank, it used to be seen as bad luck to have a female on board. Some were in ship wrecks, others on planes that landed in the sea. Not all girls that drown become mermaids, some simply die. If their too old or the magic doesn't take, they pass on to the next world. If the magic does take, they wake up on Ogygia and are reborn." That was why their souls were like this, strange and giving off the sense that they were half dead.
"It isn't your fault, you were just following orders." Reyna assured Corona, "and after the loss of so many, it would be an honor to have you join us." Reyna reached out, placing a wet hand on Asther's shoulder. "You are not the only one who has sinned." Reyna smiled kindly and went back into the water to finish cleaning. She did not hear Asther's last part, about how Corona had died killing Mama. "Yes, Mama was a vial woman, that was why death was preferable to returning there." Reyna hadn't known there was a new Mama in town, if she had, she would have likely killed herself. Her stay with Mama hadn't been all bad, she had spent most of it asleep.
