Reyna was not going to let this go, even if Luis thought he would win this fight, without those around him protecting him, he was nothing more than a weak scientist and history enthusiast. "You may think you're some great force of will to be reckoned with, but out here, in the sea, this is mermaid territory." How was it that someone blind could exude this much confidence? Reyna was sure, but she did know that this was a battle Luis was not going to win. "There were many times I could have given you away to the proper authorities, but I didn't do that did I?" Reyna scowled, two could play at this game. "Let's see, Luis Reamus, wanted for possession of illegal weapons, suspected illegal activity within the black market, and countless other misdemeanors and strikes. You're not a very good doctor if you have so many malpractice suits."
"How did you know that?"
"You just confirmed it for me," Luis made a grab for something, but Asther shouted, allowing Reyna to back up so that Luis's hand closed around nothing. "You'll never get those shells," Reyna hissed. "Ariel can only live outside because she's not a real mermaid," Reyna would have reached out to grab Asther and bring her in closer, but she didn't know where Asther was standing and Reyna did not want to run into a wall. At long last Luis swaggered away. "You're the Captain of this ship Asther, I'd expect you'd be able to convince at least one in your crew to follow you." It was not meant to be an insult, it was more advice than anything. "Now come, let's go learn that song." Reyna's smile was gentle now, "I've hidden the shells somewhere he'll never look." Reyna assured Asther, not telling her where it was in case there was someone listening in on them. The other girls wanted to sing too, they wanted to be a part of the action, or perhaps just relieved of their boredom. The four of them sat on the floor in the common room, somewhere Reyna had never been.
"Most of the mermaids on the island are fighters," Shannon explained. "We have a group of singers to disorient the sailors, which your Captain seemed to have already known about, and the others are the fighters that work to sink the ship." Shannon of course was the one that knew all about this. "We fight not only to take revenge, but to protect our island. Every month or so, the full moon rises the tide high enough for a lost ship to come into our lagoon. Should they spot us, it would become a danger to all of our kind. So we kill them, not only because they hurt us, but because our secret needs to stay secret. That is why mermaids cannot exist off of the island, that and one other reason." Reyna gave a curt nod, now you know why we fought so hard to kill everyone on the ship."
Reyna smiled, "I'm glad that you'll all accept her as one of us." Reyna said quietly, she wanted to see again, she wanted Ariel to have a life of her own.
