Reyna looked down with a frown, "I've been sensing it for a while now, the decline in magic." She didn't want to admit it. "I have a day left at most." Reyna twirled a strand of hair around her finger in thought. "Hmm," she debated, wondering what they could do to remedy this situation. "I have an idea, not that any of my ideas ever work, but-" Reyna stood to explain it, pacing at the front of the room. "What if we can outfit the rowboat with wheels?" Reyna debated, "If we can do that and find the backup generator, assuming this ship has one, we can transport Ariel on it on land." Reyna hoped that this would work, she wanted Ariel to live.
"Wolfe can pull it," that would get Wolfe off of the ship. "I can sit in the boat too, that takes care of that problem, Asther, Hazuki, and Shannon will lead the way through the jungle, and Luis and Hope, you two will guard the ship and bring it around when the full moon hits." Reyna turned towards them, "Do you think it's going to work?" She asked, hopeful for the future. The others were silently debating, Reyna allowed them to bide their time. "Let's do it!" Wolfe said at last, prompting the agreement of everyone else in the group. It took a few hours, but at long last, they made it to the other side, Luis tagging along deciding that he needed to be there to make sure Ariel came back to life. No one else knew how to read those machines, it seemed that they would have to trust him for the time being. By the time they reached the other side of the mountains, it was nightfall. "Reyna, we're at the water's edge." Shannon informed her and Reyna nodded and stood.
"Where is it?" Shannon and Hazuki guided her, shielding Reyna from view as she took off her clothes and dove into the water. At first she panicked, her legs became heavy, turning into a tail, but all was dark, an all encompassing pressure in her mind. Not knowing which way was up or down, Reyna swam in circles until slowly, the edges of her vision began to clear. She swam in faster circles, excitement welling up inside of her and the faster she swam, the clearer her eyesight became. At long last, Reyna stuck her head up out of the water, beaming. "I can see!" She breathed, blinking the tears out of her eyes. She held the shells enclosed in her fists, having hid them on her person the entire time.
The time had come for them to submerge Ariel. At long last it was the moment of truth. Ariel was released from the tank, Hazuki and Shannon assisted the mermaid's body into the water, Reyna staying close beside them. Her legs turned into a tail, so small and fragile, but Ariel did not open her eyes. Leo watched the machines, noting the change, his poker face remained excellent. "I'm afraid it didn't work," he spoke sadly, but Reyna knew it was a fool's errand, having brought her here. "Reyna, I tried to tell you," Shannon said quietly. "The lagoon can't heal dead mermaids." Reyna looked away, nodding, "I-I know," she said quietly. "Gentlemen," Reyna stood, "Thank you for your assistance," Wolfe and Luis both nodded and waved, going on their way. "This is Asther's first swim in the lagoon, isn't it?" Reyna grinned and the four mermaids swam back towards their home.
