I stare straight up at Maddalene. Who was she talking to, and what was that about? But what's more, she hasn't caught on with what I am. I look at the bottle and decide to take her word for it, I mean, what else can I do? It tastes sweet. It didn't stop me from being hungry, though, nor did it make my eye look like how it's supposed to. Instead, it made me feel a little bit calmer and cleared my mind a bit so I can think a bit more rationally. Again, what else can I do? I'm not going to kill someone else, not today. I reach over for the closest bit of meat that I had earlier dropped and later stared at with longing, turned away from Maddalene, and started eating it as quietly as I could.
