It didn't happen much as anybody could understand, but there was the rarest occasion. A birth among the apocalypse. New life. It unsettled everybody for varying reasons and because it had become so unique and scarcely known, it seemed to turn the capitol on its head like it was foreign alien source that was a greater threat than zombies themselves. But love was love and Thornton wouldn't come between that. Nobody addressed the matter beforehand and so he intended to treat it as normal as possible.
There were many complaints and expectations, both silent and unspoken following Thornton with their eyes, and those opinions clearly voiced, to do something more than accept the child into the colony. The population were expecting death, experimentation or exile. More like hoping but they were not options. They had merely lost sight of humanity and the circle of life since the wide spread infection. He couldn't blame them for that, having to rewire their minds to adjust to the new world.
They were all pretty unaccustomed to treating children around the stronghold but even Thornton detected it was harsh yet essential.
Best to train him young and let him know what he was in for so he had more chance of defending himself in the near future. There was no sugar coating the reality and on basis of respect, they all deserved the truth. His responsibility was helping others at the best chance of life.
There had only ever been one instance when the colony strongly opposed and fought Graham on a decision. After a birth among the colony. Nobody thought it'd happen but it did and despite some sceptism it wasn't a mutant child, just a very human in tact baby.
Graham had to address the new topic publicly before it became an issue though that was already a mind set for some individuals. "Conceiving a child is not against our laws. It's human nature and the circle of life and we need to maintain what we have that's human and natural," he announced resulting in a wave of objections and heckling.
Original colonists were worried about infection and radiation affecting it's much weaker and suspcetible immune system and adding to the hoard's numbers. They worried it was another mouth to struggle to feed and supply for and it would take priority over their fickle lives.
This never became the case.
