Maddie had just reached out to take the white Styrofoam cup full of medicine from the nurse when the loud male voice made the kids in the cafeteria stir with anticipation. She raised her head to see a boy around her age with a short crop of brown hair enter the room, a hesitant look on his face. He sat across from another boy and they began to talk. Maddie thought it best not to eavesdrop.
The pills inside the cup the nurse had delivered to her on a silver tray were small and white. She carefully took them out and placed them on her tongue, swallowing them down with a sip of water. She had never learned how to be sneaky in hiding her meds, so she just took them. In all honesty, Maddie felt good when she had them. Like with the rules put upon her, they kept her in line. Kept her from doing crazy things.
While everyone had their attention on the newcomer, Madeleine took the opportunity to finally study everyone in the cafeteria. Even though she'd been here for almost two weeks, she still couldn't remember everyone's names. She knew Kimi Yubari, a pretty girl of Asian descent, Taven Aldrich, Meghan Hampton and, now that he'd just been introduced, the new boy Maxwell Harbours.
"Oh shut your ass Andy," Madeleine heard the boy across from Maxwell say loudly, "they won't let you look at a computer after what you did to be landed in here." Maddie realized that he was speaking to the boy who had talked about writing a scathing Yelp review, whom she guessed was named Andy.
She was finished her breakfast and Andy seemed nice enough, so she looked over at him and rested her chin in one palm. "So, what did you do to be landed in here?" she asked, not stopping to wonder if she should even ask that. Just because she'd been the shy girl in school, doesn't mean she had to be one here too. Perhaps this was her chance to shed the timidness she hated in herself once and for all.
