Everything was happening all too suddenly. It felt surreal and Elaine is taken aback by all of it. Her hazel eyes followed down to his hands as he gestured between the two of them.
"Fate? I feel rather cheated...." her voice quieted, almost whispering. She could smell the alcohol in his breath and she knew then that he was intoxicated. For so many years, she waited for this very moment. So much of her time was wasted hoping and dreaming that he would come sweep her off her feet. But that moment has passed. That Elaine was buried and left back in London.
The spark she once felt and all the love she had for him was replaced with an empty void inside her. Being the kind person that she is, she cared very much for him and love him, but not the same way she used to. Back then she would've given an arm and a leg just to be right in this moment, but now, it feels too late. His words about fate doesn't faze her. Fate never gave her the chance she wanted; she was forced to work hard for it all her life. Probably something he could never understand. He looks like he's well off now; getting anything and everything he wanted. Drowning himself with the luxury that she could only dream of.
His words felt sincere and meaningful, but how could she believe them? "I've missed you Elaine" The desperation in his tone was obvious, but it felt like a lost man crying for help. It didn't feel like the teenage Vincent that would've given up the world for her. With his forehead touching hers, she closed her eyes. She was torn; her childhood felt complete again, but her present self felt empty for him.
He was the very reason Elaine left England; to escape the empty promise he left her with. This whole situation felt like a joke. Like life wanted to continue toying with her emotions.
As her eyes opened, she felt his nose touch hers and in an instant she felt his warm lips pressed tightly against hers. Elaine's hazel eyes widened and froze. She fell into a daze as she felt her heart melt with his gesture. Every part of her wanted to submit to his kiss, but she knew it was wrong. A million thoughts raced into her mind; He has a fiance! In that instant, she pushed herself off of him and placed a hand over her lips.
"Y-you have a fiance, Vincent." she stammered to say those words, but that was the reality of it.
"This isn't a game; I'm not a toy you can play with. I waited....eleven years for you to show up, but not even once did I cross your mind. " Elaine wiped the tear that had fallen down her cheek. She exhaled out as if she had been holding her breath the whole time. She dared not look at Vincent one more time for she knows it would just make it harder to leave.
"You're drunk and I'm going home... "
Wanting to escape the situation, she made her way towards the coat check. She gave the attendee the ticket and he returned her thin, off-white coat. Placing one hand through the sleeve, she swung it around to place the other and fixed it to sit on her petite body. She made her way to the door and the doorman swung it open for her. The rain had continued once again. Joe was probably still inside the hall, but she could not bear another moment in there. Without an umbrella, Elaine began to walk home.
