"Matt, look at me," Her voice came out quiet, and almost far away. His mind was going a thousand miles a minute. He was like an overcharged battery. "Stop focusing on what's happening and look at me". He strained his neck to try and look up at her, pain and shame written all over his face. "Alice I don't know if I can" his voice came out small and desperate, but he was being honest. He didn't know if he could stop. If the next step would just be human combustion. He could feel the electricity coursing through his body, setting off each nerve like an alarm. It was a strange feeling, and maybe if he wasn't so afraid he would embrace it. He felt energized, and new but Matt was rejecting it. He didn't want the future for whatever this meant. He just wanted to go home to his family and have his mom complain about submitting his application for college, spend the night with Jasper, and tease Alice at the lunch table. This thing could only mean bad things. I mean, he'd never heard of the human lightning rod, except in movies. This was all just too overwhelming for one mind to comprehend.
His head jerked up at the sound of another pair of footsteps, his eyes now landing on both of his best friends. Alice and Jasper. They had both come to his help. “Matt, it will all be okay. They’re just powers, I have them too. Let’s just go home and we can all talk about it. My parents are gone for the night…I have some things to tell you guys too…”. They're just powers, I have them too. That would explain the freak accident that had happened at school. Still, how could Jasper be so calm about something like this? What more did he have to say about their situation?
"Just powers? Jasper there's electricity. Electricity shooting from my finger tips. I- I could've killed someone, almost, killed someone back there. Now I can't seem to stop it. How can this somehow be okay?" He tone held nothing rude, more of a desperation and confusion. There was one thing that both Alice and Jasper said that he understood. He needed to calm down. His emotions were definitely making things worse.
He clenched his eyes shut, and took a deep breath, and again several times until his shaky breath turned more solid and steady. He found that the electricity needed guidance. This would be something he still could never wrap his head around. It was almost a living being inside him, bending to his will. He flexed his fingers in the dirt, slowly wiggling each finger until the electricity had completely disappeared. Or so it seemed. Matt could still feel it, almost like butterflies in his stomach, but it was much calm and dormant. After his little light show finally seemed to have been subdued he decided to face his friends who were still both entirely concerned.
"I think I'm fine, I feel like I got hit by a truck and thrown in a deep fryer, but ok" His voice still came out slightly hoarse, his hair was tousled, and he just looked tired. He slumped back on his heels, wiping the dirt on his jeans, something he'd normally never do. "We need to get out of here. Someone's already probably called the cops, because of you know. I don't want it to come back." His eyes seemed to darken and his gaze strayed to the ground. How would he even be able to go back to school? He'd be labeled as a freak. His status however was the least of his concerns, his newfound 'powers' as Jasper called them didn't seem to want to go away entirely.
