Hikari watches Kazuo leave without a word, and when the gentle giant is no longer in sight, the easy, polite, hopeful smile slides off his face. Hikari stares at the cracked-open door and sighs deeply. He wasn't rejected- not outright. But the stiffening of Kazuo's shoulders, the tightened fingers around Hikari's empty bowl, the blatant signs of blatant discomfort...those were enough to go on. And although Kazuo had every right not to return his affections, there was a still a weight settling in his stomach as the realization became fully solid. XX
Standing from his futon and gathering up his clothes, Hikari headed toward the bathroom, taking his time in the shower under water so hot his skin is pink when he steps out. He spends a good long moment staring at his blurred reflection in the fogged-over mirror; he definitely looks the part of having passed out late at night drunk. There are grey bags under his eyes and his eyes themselves seem distant, but Hikari goes about drying off and dressing before his brain can pull up the question of "why". Kazuo is in his room when Hikari comes out of the bathroom, bowl clean and drying on the counter, and Hikari smiles at the simple consideration in everything. XX
Hikari returns to his room and tosses his dirty clothes in his laundry basket. Despite Kazuo's suggestion, however, he doesn't actually go back to sleep. Instead, he picks up his camera and walks back to the bathroom. The mirror is still foggy and Hikari snaps a photo of his vague reflection, pleased with the outcome. He takes another photo of the blooming peace plant in the corner of the sitting room, and another of the row of succulents on the bookshelf by his bedroom door. They're all mundane photos, but beautiful nonetheless. XX
Out of the corner of his eye, Hikari registers that Kazuo's door is not quite closed all the way, and he tiptoes over to catch Kazuo sitting with his back to the door, headphones on, absorbed in a book Hikari doesn't recognize. He lifts his camera and snaps a picture of him, looking so peaceful and content. He barely has time to wonder if it's right to take photos of someone without permission before he's walking back to his own room, hanging the photographs up and putting his camera away before taking Kazuo's advice and getting rest. XX
When he wakes up again, it's already dark, and Hikari can hear rain pouring down outside. He hasn't even sat up yet when his phone goes off, and he brings it to his ear without bothering to check the Caller ID. It's Akari. "We found out how the news about the baby got out. It was obaa-san. I can't really say I'm surprised, but you should have seen tou-san's reaction! I don't think I've ever seen him so angry." She says. "Anyways, are you feeling any better? No chaos happen today?" Hikari lets out a hollow laugh. "Well, I cannot say there was no chaos. I got your package in the mail last night, and let's just say I've learned I can not hold alcohol very well." XXX
"Oh boy, this sounds like a story worth hearing. What happened?" "I kissed Kazuo-san. And I was drunk, but not drunk enough to have done it without meaning to. This morning I told him why, and...I'm pretty sure I've been rejected." "Oh, Michan...are you sure he rejected you? Did he say it aloud?" "No, I think he's too polite for that. But his body language said it all. He was very uncomfortable." "I see.." Akari paused, comtemplative. "Well, get some rest. Call me again tomorrow?" "I will, I promise. Good night, nee-san." "Bye." XX
Hikari hangs up the phone and sighs, tossing it gently onto his blankets and watching droplets slide down the window, blurring the city lights and stars he wouldn't be able to see anyways. Not wanting to get out of bed, Hikari pulls his covers close and goes back to sleep. XX
