The confusion on her dad's face cleared and he shook Scarlett's hand. "Nice to meet you too Scarlett.
Annabelle took another bag from her dad. She knew better than to try and take anything back from Scarlett. It wasn't that Scarlett was vicious or controlling, or anything like that, she was just stubbornly helpful. Any protests that they could manage without her would fall on deaf ears. Scarlett had decided that she was going to help and that was what was going to happen. She grabbed another bag from the doorway. "Upstairs then?"
Annabelle bounded up the stairs and walked along the hallway until she found her room. A brief thrill ran through her when she saw she was rooming with Katiana. She dropped her backpack on the unmade bed and helped get the rest of her cases in her room. "I'll have to head off now sweetie, work needs me tomorrow."
Annabelle nodded. "Ok, sure. Don't worry about it." She wrapped her arms around him and pecked his cheek. "Thanks for driving me over."
Her dad gave her a brief squeeze before he pulled away. "Take care. and if you ever need anything, just call."
Annabelle smiled. "I think between Scarlett and Nick, I'll be fine, but I'll call when I get homesick." She looked over at Scarlett. "She's a fine upstanding member of the community. She's studying to be a doctor. I'm in very good hands," she said as she led her dad back downstairs. She could feel her phone buzzing in her pocket. She wasn't usually this popular. Her dad opened the door to the car and gave her one last peck on the cheek.
"Take care sweetie."
Annabelle rolled her eyes playfully. "I will. Drive safe." She waved him off and watched the car pull away until he turned the corner off the street. It was a bittersweet feeling watching him go and she missed him the moment his car was out of sight. She took her phone from her pocket and opened her messages. Her chest tightened for a split second when she saw the first message was from Brooks. She liked Brooks, of that she was sure. What she wasn't sure about was exactly what these feelings were. They had been friends since their freshman year and she had missed him. Being around Brooks was as easy as breathing.
I'd definitely rather be drawing than unpacking. See you later?
And then there was Khari. How the hell had she gotten into this? She wasn't expecting to like anyone, at all, nevermind a senior. He was cute, really cute, and Annabelle knew she got hideously flustered when he was around.
Define fun. I visited some art galleries on my own. Such a rock&roll lifestyle, I know. How was your summer?
Annabelle pocketed her phone and headed back inside. She sat down on the couch next to Kat and took her plate. Annabelle propped her head on Kat's shoulder. "So, how was your summer?"
