Luna hugged her jacket closer to her as the howling wind continued to whip around them. Ronan and Xavier were hard at work lowering the boats into the Mendenhall Lake after a long drive down the road to get here in the first place. Luckily this time Ronan knew to not drive like a wild animal. Sadly, Ping had to stay behind, canoes and hikes were not for wildcats like Ping. Yui's pet was well-behaved though, so no one was required to stay behind and watch poor lonely Ping. Damian had organized this event for them to start off the October festivities. Halloween was a big occasion for them so they wanted to make the entire month as fun as possible for the kids.
"It's cold!" Luna complained as Ronan helped her into the kayak. Since they were a party of 8, they separated them into four groups of two, with four boats. Normally they could squeeze three in if they were careful but with all the hiking gear to climb the Mendenhall Glacier, it really was best to limit it to two per boat. Sadly this meant that the kids couldn't kayak together because they were probably too small to be able to oar over to the mountainous glacier looming at them from above. Xavier scooped Ren up into his kayak no matter how much Ren tried to squeeze in with Yui and Damian and Ally and Leo were quick to go together in their loveboat. "Uh." Ronan scratched at his head, realizing how quickly everyone organized themselves. "Uh, I guess you're with me?" Luna's cheeks were pink, she was very happy with this arrangement even if Ronan was awkward about it.
Ronan helped her into the kayak, taking great care only to touch her sides and not anywhere less innocent. He clambered in as well and then readies the oars. "I can just blow us all there with my wind." Luna suggested with a half smile, trying not to look at Ronan's direction as he manned the oars. He looked so cool for some reason! Well, he always looked cool, to be fair. "Damian says we're supposed to do this without our powers." Ronan grunted as he worked the oars, using powerful strokes of his arm to outpace Ally and Leo already. "If normal humans can do this, it would be insulting if we couldn't manage this too!" "Um, Ronan..." They were alone, and with the splish splash of the lake, no one else would be able to hear.
Wasn't this the perfect opportunity?
But then her heart was beating too fast and Luna lost the nerve to do it so she looked away when Ronan asked her what was up. "We should go fast! What if Damian loses balance and he and Yui fall in!" The Black Reaper groaned as he did another powerful motion with the oars. "That won't happen, I trust the guy." He said gruffly, his voice like a low rumble that vibrated through the whole kayak. "If anything, Yui would love a chance to swim in water like this, make friends with the local fish. She's weird like that." Xavier and Ren were the first ones to make it and the two boys anchored their kayak in place and were waiting for the rest of them.
A sudden competitive look was in Luna's eyes as the two kayaks were neck and neck for the final stretch. "Ronan... let's race Damian and Yui to the glacier!" Her eyes twinkled at Ronan with amusement. "You don't want him to be manlier than you, do you? You already lost to Xavier, can your manly pride survive?" Ronan let out a grunt that was mildly annoyed, as if he knew what she as doing. "But fine, I'll play along. Yo, Damian! First group between us to get to the glacier gets to eat a cake made by the losers!" Luna gave Yui a wave, hoping the Coddess was enjoying herself. "Yui, maybe you can find a cod in the lake! Then you can really be the Coddess!"
