James hadn't even gotten that far when he heard the gunshot. It made him stop in his tracks. And for a second, he considered going back. But neither Chloe nor Ryan were the type to go down with a single shot. And perhaps against his best judgement, he turned and kept walking, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. It was entirely likely it wasn't even one of them, it was some of his father's staff against some of the Salants. He felt his phone buzz in his pocket and pulled it out, seeing Chloe's number popped up. He shoved it into his pocket, waiting for it to stop ringing. He didn't want to answer. Not now. He still felt too fragile, too on edge. But as soon as the phone started ringing, he texted her and Ryan, sending them both the same message.
"Am safe. Heading to a friend's for the night. Talk soon."
He wasn't going to say he'd talk to them in the morning, because he didn't want to worry them if he didn't call them. He knew that this wasn't going to be the type of thing where he woke up in the morning and worried what all the fuss was about. This was going to take a few days to get over, if he ever did. He wasn't going to escape this any time soon. So maybe the night away from the house would clear his head. Assuming his belongings weren't left on the doorstep when he got back.
