xxx"i've never so adored you
xxxi'm twisting allegories now
xxxi want to complicate you
xxxdon't let me do this to myself."James hadn’t gotten very far when he felt someone grab his arm and drag him into an alleyway. Expecting a fight, he whirled around- and instead Chloe stood there, telling him to just be quiet. He folded his arms, leaned against the wall opposite her, and listened. He could remember the anger when the shipment had fallen through. Ryan had been quiet at the table- not quiet enough to give way that he’d been involved. His silence could have been mistaken for anger, but now it made sense. The limp he’d sported for a few weeks after hadn’t been the result of a random mugging, either. James couldn’t quite make eye contact as Chloe got to her feet, but he didn’t offer any resistance as she opened his hand. Her touch felt like an electric shock, but in the best way possible. And he sighed. “Chloe, I’m... I can’t do this any more. I need to get away from this life, I need to find somewhere else. I haven’t gone home since that night. Nobody’s come looking for me either, which is... they clearly don’t care any more. I can move my classes to online, I’m planning on doing that later.” He raised a hand to run his thumb along her cheekbone, still not quite able to make eye contact. “And your family loves you. If I disappear, nobody will notice or care. If you do, somebody will. And if we disappear together, I’m afraid our families will notice and be angry. My family might care about me if yours is involved.” And he sighed and dropped his arm. “I would love to bring you with me. But I don’t want to put you at risk either.”
