Autumn's question caught him off guard, and Ben suddenly took great interest in the pile of books nearest him. Jake's avoidance of the question didn't go unnoticed either. All the way back when, Ben almost definitely would have asked out Jake out by this point if they'd met under different circumstances. But there was so many reasons that it couldn't happen, wouldn't happen now. Ben cleared his throat as he tried not to dwell on it.
"Hey, we better go get that pizza before all the hungry creatures get it!" Ben said in the hope of distracting both himself and Autumn. "You want a piggyback? You can keep an eye out for anything scary that looks like it might just steal our pizza!" He asked, bending down and holding out his arms to her. He glanced at Jake, hoping to at once ask for permission and say it was okay, he was okay with the question she'd asked. Even if he wasn't really. He just didn't want to dwell on it too long, dwell on the consequences, on their inevitable departure.
