He got the bill settled and turned, heading back towards the bookstore as quickly as he could go, making sure that they hadn't left anything behind on his way out. The walk had never seemed quite so long, despite Ben's pace being considerably faster than usual. Eventually, he got to the bookstore and caught up with Jake and Autumn. It was only then he remembered that he was supposed to have half a shift left to work. "Don't worry about it. You deal with this," Dave said, without Ben even having to say anything. Ben nodded, breathing a sigh of relief. He pulled his scarf from around his neck and handed it to Jake. "Here, it should help keep her warm."
Taking some of Jake's stuff and throwing a bag onto his shoulder, he opened the door and held it for Jake. "It's about a fifteen minute walk from here, will she be okay?" He asked quietly as they stepped out onto the street and started walking. He wished there was more he could do, but for once, he was stuck. It made him miss the days of being able to help people, of actually being able to make a difference to people like Autumn and Jake. But even when he had been able to help, he hadn't been there when it had really mattered. Seven people had died, and he hadn't been able to do anything about it. And besides, with his hands, nobody could ever trust him with a scalpel. He barely trusted himself with sharp knives.
