|| Dearly Beloved || Utada Hikaru ||
Callisto was dragged down the hallway and to an elevator shaft, where she was taken to a jail cell. The androids shoved her inside, clearly upset at her for punching their precious leader in the nose. She sat down, crossing her arms, glad that she had done it. She faced the wall, cradling her hurt hand. Could this be mended? Callisto wasn't sure. Her fingers were splayed at odd angles, the joints poking through her synthetic skin. "This is a mess," Callisto sighed, wondering if her hand was ever going to be the same. She looked up at the sky, her internal monitor informing her of the time. It was late, she should be charging right around now, but instead she was here, sitting in a jail cell, no doubt having all of her privileges revoked. Whatever privileges she might have had in the first place anyhow.
It was a while before anyone came to see her. She remained in the spot, hoping to use as little power as possible, but sleeping in the cold, drafty jail cell was almost impossible. Every time she drifted off, she was awoken by her inner heating system. It was morning by the time someone arrived, an android holding handcuffs. "You're coming with me," he said, bearing a synthetic beard, clearly an escort unit. She held her arms forward, the cuffs latching shut with a magnetic click! She sighed as she followed him, wondering if she was taken to be put on a trial of some sort. Instead, he took her to what was clearly a lab, but not the same one Viren had used in an attempt to reprogram her. He was there, the smarmy bastard with his sweater obscuring most of his features.
"What do you want?" She asked as the escort pushed her down to lay on a stretcher. "I'm going to fix your hand," he said patiently as her good hand was cuffed to the railing. "You can't," Callisto replied, looking up at the harsh fluorescent lights of the ceiling. "It's shattered, I already looked." He sat down on a chair with wheels and scooted forward, zooming in. "You're rather smart for a simple idol unit," he credited, "we intercepted the messages you've been trying to send out, but it seems one still slipped through the cracks. You rerouted a holo pad specifically to scramble our scramblers." Callisto rolled her eyes, that had been child's play. "I'm not an idol unit," she replied, "I'm a person, just like everyone else whose lives you've ruined." Viren dropped her hand onto a table, disconnecting it for the time being from the rest of her. She was plugged into a port on the wall, battery levels slowly rising.
"But you're an android, against your will." She glared up at the ceiling, "No," Callisto replied, "I'm an android because it allows me to lead a life I would never get to otherwise." He seemed to pay no heed to her words. "My real body is a vegetable. Riddled with cancer, I'm probably going to die soon. Being Cali allowed me to live the way I wanted to, without the limitations of being a sickly teenager." Viren stopped, Callisto looked over as he stared at her, there was sadness in his eyes. "Don't pity me," she murmured, "sympathy is a cancer kid's worst enemy." He looked back down at her hand, her synthetic skin completely removed up to her elbow.
"You're not the only human who has struggled. Most androids were deemed useless, disposed of, then enslaved by humanity." She wrinkled her nose, enslaved wasn't the right term, not in her eyes. "Not every android is so privileged to have a light that draws everyone towards them." He reached up to touch her cheek, leaving a spot of grease on her skin. "You have a gift Callisto, you bring people together, whether you mean to or not."
"Why did you bring me here?"
"For Io, because she would never have agreed if your life wasn't on the line."
"Yes she would have," Callisto replied softly. "My sister and I haven't been on good terms since she disappeared." Callisto looked up at the ceiling once more, closing her eyes. "And I just keep screwing things up."
"This is your chance to revise it," Viren replied, Callisto's eyes snapping open. "Take advantage of your ability to start over."
"This isn't what I wanted. I never wanted any of this, I just wanted to sing and dance and see the world." Tears welled up in her eyes, Callisto felt naked in front of Viren for some strange reason, why was she exposing her heart? Was this part of the new programming? Could she not lie to him?
