Darkness hides behind the sun

Theodore and Theresa were cooking away in the kitchen, talking about their upcoming day. It was Saturday. Theo doesn’t work until later that evening and Theresa works in the morning. So he was in charge of babysitting Izzy and Hailey, which shouldn’t be too hard. They were making sure they were getting their timing right so that Tessa made sure she came home early enough so that Theo got to work. Everything seemed to be okay. Theo is rarely late to work. He can’t really afford to be. He was so focused on his schedule and making breakfast that he hadn’t even noticed River had walked into the kitchen.
Tessa smiled at him. ”Good morning.” she replied to him. ”I’m going to wake Izzy and Hailey for breakfast. Set the table.” She commanded Theo. Theodore rolled his eyes. ”Yes ma’am.” He said with a laugh as she walked off down the hall. Making the table was part of the weekend tradition. They were to eat breakfast together as a family no matter what. It was why Theo worked in the early evenings and why Tessa started working in the later half of the morning. His mother instilled that tradition in the family since he was small. He remembers his parents singing in the kitchen and being obnoxious as the sleepy siblings would gather for breakfast. But it was one of his favorite memories. When she died, him and Tessa made sure that tradition did not die even if their father wouldn’t attend half of the time. Today it seemed like one of those days where he wouldn’t attend.
Theodore looked to River, who seemed small standing over by himself. They weren’t making any eye contact, though not for lack of trying on Theo’s side. ”Good morning. I hope you slept well.” He said with a bright smile. Theo turned to grab the plates from the cabinets, along with some cups. He walked over to their dining table, setting out the dishes for everyone to eat out. ”I hope you are hungry. Um hopefully we have food that you like, we don’t have much options outside of eggs, bacon, and waffles.” He said, as he moved back into the kitchen to get the silverware. He set those out on the dining room table as well. ”Go ahead and pick any seat at the table. Oh and I can make sure you get to wherever you have to go, but after breakfast.” He added. River had to stay for breakfast. He wasn’t exactly family, but Theo wasn’t about to let him go home hungry.
Before River could protest, a tiny girl with pigtails and princess costume sprinted out to the dining room and jumped up into Theo’s arms. ”TEDDY!” Theo laughed and kissed Hailey’s cheek. ”Good morning Princess. How did you sleep?” Hailey giggled. ”Good.” Then she gasped and wiggled out of his arms so that he would put him down. ”Who’s that?” She pointed to River and he quickly pushed her hand down. ”That’s my friend, River” ”Is he staying for waffles?” ”I think so.”
