Seongjae listened sympathetically as Kaori explained her situation. Magic wasn't really a tangible thing, and it could understandably be difficult to get a grasp on. When Seongjae was younger and more temperamental, he'd give up on magic constantly, before his curiosity would tempt him to return. He was always capricious like that. It was a wonder that Seongjae had managed to get it together and focus his energy to get where he was today.
When Kaori mentioned only learning through a textbook and not through experience, Seongjae truly empathized with her boredom. Part of the reason why he hated the Korean school system -- besides the strict control on magic, of course -- was that they always made a big fuss about studying day in and day out. Seongjae and his friends had to study nonstop for hours on end after school -- often until midnight -- so they could do well on the Suneung, the sole exam at the end of their high school years that would determine the fates of their adult lives. Seongjae hated it. He would envy the main characters of the American movies he watched and the colorful lives they led.
"Hey, didn't you say Kenji helped? Or something? Earlier? Seems weird and out of character. He doesn't like people, so don't take it personal if he like, never wants anything to do with you the whole time you're here. He doesn't even hang out with us except to eat dinner, so the chance of him making friends with a total stranger is pretty damn low." Kaori's tone grew bitter and Seongjae furrowed his brows. He'd assumed Kenji was just freakishly introverted, but Kaori's expression said that there could perhaps be more to the story. Seongjae didn't want to overstep his bounds with this family and screw everything up, but if Kaori and Kenji's relationship was strained, then he couldn't just stand by and watch it remain that way.
"If you don't mind me asking," Seongjae directed his words towards Kaori, "Are you and your brother not close?" Am I overstepping my bounds? Probably. Ah, goddamnit. "Ha, I know you literally just met me, but you seem like a pretty cool person, Kaori-san." He really meant it. Seongjae had a lot of friends, but that wasn't to say he blindly formed a connection with everybody he met. People were just so interesting and unique, and even the most different of human beings were able to appeal to Seongjae's nature. "I'd love to be your friend. And hey, like I said, I know we just met, but if you ever wanna talk about anything, my door's always open." Seongjae flashed Kaori another one of his signature amiable grins.
