|| Dear Winter || AJR ||
"I would like you to come," Winter started, "But I'm worried about Claude." He needed Elise, especially now, especially once the war ended. "Claude will be lost without you, he's already lost everyone else." But he still had Elise and Winter. If Winter went away though, who would be there for him? Who would help him run the Hresvelg manor? "If Claude gives the seal of approval, then maybe." Otherwise, Winter would go alone. She had already spoken with Yuuki and Zoku about it, they would act as her guides in the spirit world. They weren't too pleased with her decision, but they respected it. Humans did not often request to go to the spirit world, apparently, and Winter could understand that. It was a strange place and she hoped that she would not have to spend too much time there before finding her Father.
"Sure, I'll read you a story." Winter nodded, picking up the holo. "I'm sure you've probably heard this one before though," Winter flipped through the pages of the holo book to find the one her Grandmother always used to tell her. "You might not realize this, but there are dragons in the sky." Winter started, she hadn't heard this story since her Grandmother had died. "The dragons control the weather. When they get mad, the sun roils and bubbles. When they are sad, fat droplets leak from their eyes and rain towards the ground. When they are happy, the skies are clear and the wind is strong, and when they are sleeping, the sky gets dark and the stars come out." Winter read until Eilse had fallen asleep. Mercedes returned with food and bottled water, placing it beside the bed, within reach for when Elise showed up.
"I'm glad she's resting," Mercedes whispered. "I am too," Winter rose, reaching for her cane. It slipped from her grasp, Mercedes catching her as her knee buckled. "Careful there," she warned, helping Winter up and handing her, her cane. "Thanks," the two of them walked out. Claude was outside of the room, how long had he been there? "How is she?" He asked, worry etched into his features. "She's good, sleeping." He breathed a sigh of relief, "I came because they said she was awake, but I guess I missed her." Winter nodded, "She should be up soon though, don't worry." He fiddled with the measuring tape in his hands, it was clear he had come here from the workshop.
"Winter?" Her holo began to go off, it was Serenity. "Yeah?" The hologram popped up, Serenity smiling. "Oh good, Mercy, I was hoping you were there too. Meet me at the Atrium," they nodded. "I should go back to work-" Claude started. "I'll see you at dinner," Winter waved to him, watching him go. Carter and Ezra were still on their mission. "Let's go see what Siri needs," Mercedes said, starting in the direction of the atrium. Winter followed her, hobbling along, trying to get used to her new leg. It was like wearing a retainer, she thought. You just had to get used to the discomfort, Winter thought.
