|| Dear Winter || AJR ||
Winter looked up at Julian, trying to explain. The most she could make were squeaking sounds, but it sounded more as though she was gasping for air. Elise seemed to figure it out quickly, pinching the bottom of Winter's foot. She jumped in pain, unable to so much as yelp. "Elise! Don't do that! Winter shouldn't be moving around," Julian scolded. Winter nodded as Elise drew her conclusion, Arke had taken her voice. How? Winter didn't know. Elise handed her the holo, which for now, would allow Winter to communicate with them. She was scared, admittedly. Arke was strong, much stronger than Winter had originally anticipated. What if they couldn't fight her? What if they all died trying? Winter did not want her friends to die. Winter did not want them to come to the Boundary, only to be killed. She had been the one to say it was a good idea. Their death would be on her hands. Winter did not think that she could live with that kind of guilt.
The door burst open, Julian shushing them as Serenity entered. She looked a bit banged up, but no worse for wear. How long had Winter been asleep? How much time had they lost? Arke would unleash a wave of monsters on them if they didn't act soon. She glanced at the edge of the holo screen. It was 5 AM, none of them had gotten any rest last night. Well, except Winter who had been passed out for the last... who knows how long. "-" she managed to squeak. Julian updated them on the situation, Oliver looking at Winter in concern. "What happened?" He asked, his brow furrowing. "Elise, did something go down while we were gone?" The base should have been secure, Oliver was probably wondering. Arke, Winter typed slowly. Every little move made her feel out of breath.
"Okay, that's enough of that," Julian took the holo pad from her. "You should be resting, use this opportunity to to heal." He handed the holo pad back to Elise and went to take a look at Serenity, who seemed happy despite the fact that she was bruised and banged up. Winter lay back in bed, feeling tired again. She was afraid of falling back to sleep. Arke had Zed and Zeus now, the two strongest Heirs had fallen to her. She had killed Iris, Winter's step mother. Suddenly Winter felt sick. She gestured to Oliver, who seemed to understand and brought a bucket for her. She pulled the oxygen mask off of her face, heaving. Carter leaned over to dab at her mouth, gold dripping down it again. She pulled the oxygen mask back on, gasping for air by the time she was done. It was awful, the only other time she had felt this bad was between transplants, waiting for the organs being grown in a lab to be fully developed.
"How long until the portal is ready?" Carter asked, snacking on beef jerky that Ezra shared with him. Why had they all congregated in here when there was a perfectly good meeting room right down the hall? "There, you're good to go." He pat Serenity's arm, having bandaged her shoulder. "Elise, that's your department." Oliver directed the question to her, "How long until we're set for take off?" Winter needed to get to the Healers as soon as possible if she wanted to stand a fighting chance against Arke. She closed her eyes, too scared to fall back to sleep, but too tired to stay awake. What was she to do? Someone pat her head. She opened her eyes to squint up at Carter, who seemed to have sense her unease.
