The sun was so bright, it nearly blinded her. It was hot, her body half buried in sand. She cried out, her voice ringing in the desert air. "Over here, I hear something." Fox said, slipping across one of the sand dunes. "Honey, it's probably a mirage." Pandora pat him on the back, but Fox was determined. "No, listen," his tails swished patiently. "It sounds like..." he trailed off, narrowing his eyes. "A baby!" Pandora perked up, "it sounds like a baby!" She slid down the dune, meeting him on the ground. They walked, following the sound, their airship having landed behind them. It was their first time on earth, a desolate desert. Their airship's gears had failed and they had to make an emergency landing. "Hello!" Fox called, his worry growing. "Hello!" He yelled again, hearing the cries of a child.
"Fox!" Pandora suddenly called, running. She had spotted something shiny in the distance. The two foxes began to run, the cries growing weaker. "No, no! Come on! Just a little more! Keep crying!" Pandora called, her instincts taking over. She bolted, sprinting through the sand, nearly tripping. Fox was close behind, the two of them stopping as they reached the shiny object. Half buried in the sand was a toddler, she could not have been older than two. She was covered in burns and scars, helpless to the elements. "Oh my!" Pandora fell to her knees, the sand hot. She could feel the heat through her pants. Fox removed his jacket, the two of them carefully wrapping her in it. "Fox, your canteen," he handed it to her, Pandora tipping the canteen up to the child's lips. She sucked the water down, her eyes half-closed.
"Let's take her with us," Pandora said, hugging the child against her chest. "Of course," Fox agreed. They made the trek back to the air ship together. They searched for the toddler's family, but there was hide nor hair of any other signs of life on earth. Pandora nursed the toddler back to health, the baby sleeping in their bed, between Pandora and Fox. "We can't just keep calling her Baby," Fox said one day. She was a shy little thing, but also playful and curious. "Alright, we'll call her Key then," Pandora decided. "Because she's the key to my heart." Fox laughed at that, "Alright, Key it is! Now come here so I can change your diaper!" Key grew up in the circus. At five years old, she was already training to be a trapeze artist. At ten years old, Key made her debut to the public. Thankfully, the burns she had as a child had healed to the point where they were no longer visible. She grew to be a stunning kitten, spoiled wrotten by her parents.
"What is that?" Key was older now, more mature, she liked to think. She sat on top of the swings, looking out one of the large windows on the air ship. Two years ago, Fox had gone out and bought a newer, larger ship that could house a bigger audience. "What are you looking at?" Felix asked, on the ground. Key flipped over, grabbing the swing with her hands and letting go. She spun on her way down, landing gracefully in the net. Key rolled out, walking to one of the windows. She was wearing one of her training leotards, pink and blue, with little diamonds on it. "That, is our next destination." Fox strode into the ring, wearing his top hat. "Only a day away from our largest city yet. That crowd is going to be what pays off this bad boy," he pat one of the walls.
Pandora cleared her throat, "It's a big city, so I would prefer if small children stayed on the ship when not supervised," Key rolled her eyes. "We're not kids anymore! Felix is 17! That's an adult!" Key protested, crossing her arms. Pandora pat her head, "he may be 17, but you'll always be my baby in my eyes. No means no Key," Felix laughed. "I'll make sure Key and Xixi stay out of trouble," he promised, but Fox gave him a look. "I don't trust you to watch over them, no offense Felix. You're not exactly straight laced." Felix shook his head, "none taken." Key looked around, wondering where Xi'An was. The two had grown up alongside one another, they were best friends.
